NAIROBI — Portuguese warship Corte-Real captured, disarmed and briefly detained 19 pirates armed with high-explosives after they attempted to attack a Norwegian-owned oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden, NATO officials said on Saturday.

The Portuguese escort frigate began hunting the mothership, a dhow with 19 heavily armed pirates aboard. After a high-speed chase the dhow was intercepted and by evening, eight marines managed to board the vessel.

The special forces discovered four 200g sticks of the chemical high-explosive P4A, four AK-47s and one rocket propelled grenade launcher with nine grenades, Fernandes said.

"It was almost a kilogram of high explosives," he said. "If used correctly it can open a hole in the hull of a ship and sink her."

"It is the first time we have spotted high explosives on board a pirate ship, normally they just stick to AK-47s and RPGs," Fernandes said, adding that he did not think the explosives signaled an escalation in violence.

A dhow is a sailing ship from hundreds of years ago. How exactly did they lead a modern frigate on a "high speed chase"?

Has the Somalian government given permission for foreign forces who capture pirates to hold and try them?

If they haven't, which appears to be the case, then the NATO forces have no choice. Ignoring state sovereignty, no matter how weak that state is sets a very bad precedent. Much as most of us dislike what the NATO forces did, we'd be beyond pissed off of someone grabbed our citizens, held them in prison and tried them without our consent. Which I may remind some of our right extremists is what essentially what the World Court would be. It's all fun and games when we are the one doing the grabbing, holding and prosecuting. It's not when our people are the ones being grabbed.

Somalia can rectify this by giving permission.

Piracy is an "International Crime".
World Court is a joke as it is..and the concept is pushed by leftist not rightists.

Right now Pirates are using ports in Somalia to attack shipping. Some of them linked to al Qaeda .....and those ports are left alone.
The Pirates caught in the act..are released.


Obama says the REAL WAR is in Afghanistan...fool doesn't even know the REAL WAR is all over the damn globe. He will do nothing.

Apparently setting a precedent that you will complain about when it happens to us isn't something you care about. Do you want to be the one to explain to the families of Americans who were captured, imprisoned, tried and maybe even executed on the precedent we set about how it all went down?

But that would require a logical, consistent belief system that isn't chock full of holes.

Some of them yes. Many of them no. That doesn't mean we can simply ignore the sovereignty of states. You'd be one of the first to ***** about the US's sovereignty being infringed. Until Somalia gives us the right to imprison and try these pirates, that's the way it is.

Actually the real principle war is in Afghanistan. While the greater war of Ideas is Global, the hot spot is indeed there. Tell me, which is a bigger conflict, several thousand pirates or tens of thousands of terrorists working out of Afghanistan and Pakistan? Take your time with the math.

Because the West does not want to set a precedent that will later be used against them. In some ways, the drone strikes in Afghanistan do this, but it does not mean we should push it even further. Some of us can see beyond a few feet. Some of us clearly cannot. I take it you were for the Republican nuclear option to strip the senate of the filibuster?

And I provided a simple solution to solve the problem. You clearly are not interested in mature debate, instead wanting to rant and vent as well as ignore your obvious double standards and hypocrisy.

I'd love to see what Triad's response would be to Americans being captured, tried and imprisoned/executed without the US's consent.

I'd bet he'd blow his top. Yet he's arguing for us to do just that to Somalian pirates.

Hypocrisy runs rampant here. It is as if people don't even think about how their belief systems are so inherently contradictory. I swear, if belief systems were nets, some of us here could catch planets in the web of contridicts and tangles that are their beliefs.

Given how the rest of your posts don't make sense, I'm not going to ask for how you expect that to make sense.

Just to reiterate:

The proposal to capture, imprison and try those without the consent of their government off the coast of that country sets a dangerous precedent that can and likely will be used against us. While the Somalian government has given permission to stop pirate attacks, to my knowledge as of it this day, they have not given us or anyone else the explicit right to imprison and try. Currently the US is doing this anyways. But it does not mean the rest of the world should enforce a weak precedent. If a US citizen was captured, tried, imprisoned and possibly executed without the US's consent for a crime, how would you feel? Do you think that Blackwater security guards should be captured, imprisoned and tried in Iraq?

It's a simple question, why are you so adamant against answering it?
