Finally, there is an explanation for all the UFO sightings around Area 51. Turns out that the base there is a part of a development program for unusual aircraft for military applications. What people thought were UFO's were actually sightings of the A-12 OXCART, one of the planes that were under development.

As for the people in the Area who claim to have gotten anal probes from aliens, there is also a scientific explanation for that - They are bat**** crazy.

Oh lord.

UFO enthusiasts and those who claim to have an encounter are summoning, depending on one's perspective, bull**** from the same area that religious fanatics are... belief/faith.

And the longer we try to disenfranchise them, the longer they will stay around.

Not that I believe in Area 51 UFO's, but the A12 was a forerunner prototype of the SR71, and looks nothing like the objects described by UFO witnesses. Try again.

There was also an A-12 the Navy was building that was canceled in 1991.

It does if you look at it just the right way.

It depends on what sightings you're referring to. Most sightings aren't the "flying discs" that have been popularized in the public mind. Black budget programs could explain a lot of the UFO sightings.

Also, the US military has been interested in flying saucers for some time.

VZ-9 Avrocar

While the Avrocar never panned out due to technological limitations, it's quite possible that the concept has been developed in light of recent technology (computers and fly-by-wire that could compensate for its inherent instability). However, what capabilities could one gain from a flying saucer as opposed to a normal, unidirectional airfoil?

I think the answer you're seeking lies more in the direction of helicopters than anything else. Those air cars were noisy, fuel hogs, had a small payload capacity, and had a high disk loading. Helicopter technology surpassed what those aircars could do, and they died.

And besides, Heaven's Gate types will always be with us. I mean, once a looney idea gets into those soft heads, it can't be taken out. Look at the Crop Circle Nuts. People confess to and describe in detail how they make crop circles, and the response is, "Yeah, but you didn't confess to making that one over there, that one must have been made by aliens."
