One standoff with pirates has already been resolved. The French killed them and rescued 4 hostages, although a fifth one died. In the other standoff, US naval ships have surrounded the pirates who are holding the commander of the Maersk Alabama.

Interesting development. We like to call the French cheese eating surrender monkeys, but the French took no prisoners today. They kicked ass. I think we had better be doing the same, or there will be plenty of American surrender jokes in France. I don't know about you, but I would like to continue the time-honored tradition of making fun of the French, and do not want the tables turned. LOL.

Looks like Obama has turned us into France, and Srakozy has turned France into US. x(

with regards to France, even a broken clock is right 2x/day.
but seriously, good for them. Obama should have led the way, but as long as he follows the example, i will be pleased

Your president will have very little say or influence on events. Its down to the commanders on the ground.

Paul.

That shouldn't be difficult as he's had little to say at all.

Good for the French! Thank you!

As long as the pirates are holding an American captain hostage, it would be moronic to try to "kick ass."

while i agree that Obama will not be faxing the commanders his plan for the rescue, in detail
this is the first time his admin is facing this situation. he could decide to change the "we do not negotiate" principal that we live by, and that most certainly will affect how the commander 'on the ground' acts

Really? Since when do we live by that principle? We aren't talking about al-Qaeda here, we're talking about common criminals. The fact that they're on the high seas instead of on American soil should make little difference in American policy. The fact that the FBI has hostage negotiators obviously indicates that we DO negotiate under certain circumstances.

What exactly do you want the US military to do? Open fire on the pirate ship and kill everyone on board, including the hostage?

Why?

Go in, kick ass. That's what needs doing. We shouldn't play their game. We should simply start teaching terrorists, and now "pirates" that the price they pay is death, pure and simple.

Too bad if some of the hostages get harmed before the criminals learn the lesson properly, but in the long run it'll improve the situation enormously.

Grow some balls, people.

Just because they have brown skin and are Muslims doesn't mean they're terrorists. These people are common criminals who want money, not some grand politically-oriented concession from the US government.

If you're interested in deterrence, there are better ways to deter pirates than killing a little boat of pirates (and the hostage). A permanent US Navy presence patrolling the coasts of Somalia would be much more effective. That wouldn't preclude negotiations in future hostage situations involving common criminals, similar to what we do in hostage situations on American soil. You can always arrest or kill them (or not, depending on the situation) once the hostages are freed.

We need to do some more serious and committed nation building on the horn of Africa.

Hardly. The pirates are surrounded and in a lifeboat.

Send in a SEAL team to put a very small limpet mine on the bottom of the boat, blow the bottom out, pick up the captain, leave the pirates for the sharks.

We can start by preaching the virtue of the rule of law by crucifying the pirates in the old Roman fashion along the coastline.

did you miss the part where I said "and now pirates"? Can you point out the parts where I mentioned skin color and muslims, too?

That makes 'em terrorists.

Kill'em and be done with them, nobody that matters, like me, for instance, will miss 'em.

You think maybe we should grab people not connected with the crime and kill them, too?

No, I think we should just focus on killing the terrorists and whatever it is you mean by "criminals" and make piracy completely unprofitable.

A permanent US Navy presence patrolling the coasts of Somalia would be much more effective.

Oh, yeah, and Obamanoid demanding an expansion of permanent US presence overseas. Go figure.

A better solution is to identify the nationality of the pirates and bill their nation the cost of the vessel and cargo that was lost or may have been lost by their citizens, and deduct it from the foreign aid money we're wasting on them, add it to the principal of their IMF loans, or, most effective, withdraw it from the swiss bank accounts of their national leaders.

Negotiations are pointless if they know you're going to kill them afterwards. They won't negotiate. Therefore, just do what's necessary to kill them. If it's a ground based situation, perhaps it's possible to extract the hostages, but the primary goal should be the immediate deaths of the criminals.

That's how kidnappers are deterred.

That's out of style.

I think for the next three years every cargo-ship should have a small detachment of commandos. See how long piracy will last when the uncertainty of the International Response turns into the uncertainty of "if this ship will bite harder than us".

Which would be fine and dandy, except they have a hostage.

WHAT??! You support baby rape? That's disgusting.
See, I can randomly make **** up too and attribute it to you. ;)

A permanent US Navy presence off the coast of Somalia would be the most effective deterrent. You're an idiot if you don't recognize that fact.

You're kidding, right? The pirates are almost certainly all Somali. And Somalia has no functioning national government, which is why piracy exists there in the first place.

Depends on the situation. I'm not saying we need to always kill them once the hostages are freed; it depends on the situation.

Do you favor the same policy when the criminals are white Americans? Do you think the FBI needs hostage negotiators at all? After all, they're just ***** appeasers, right?

Don't need commandos, just a half-dozen 40mm grenade launchers and a dozen or so RPGs per vessel. Blow their little dingies out of the water when they get too close.

And a 55-gallon drum of chum to make sure the sharks come in to dispose of the pirates properly.

Personally, I've wondered about acquiring an old cargo vessel and hiring it out as a charter for big game hunters. African safaris fetch a pretty penny....how much would a pirate hunting cruise fetch per person?

I suspect that with the development of the most recent warships arriving, one of them is escorting SEAL Team 6. Once the FBI is done exhausting themselves with negotiations and they feel the pirates may actually execute the hostage (which would be suicidal seeing that it is the only thing keeping them alive) Obama might grow a pair, issue the order and a night time helicopter borne raid will take place. I expect this whole issue to be resolved before Easter, the longer it goes on the more attractive it looks to target U.S vessels.

Ya they also had more hostages.

The US Navy should just offer to take them back to Somalia and not arrest them if they let the captain go. It's not like these guys have much leverage to demand ransom.

I like to make fun of the French as much as anyone, but the truth is they really do have some extremely badass commandos. It's probably the result of all those young men growing up over there hearing how much we make fun of them and getting mad.

Spoken like the true liberal you are.

I guess if someone came in your house and robbed and ass raped you, you'd give them a ride home, and buy them a milkshake, and say thank you.

Then you'd call the government and want some free stuff for your suffering.

And people wonder what happened to our country.
