Obama declines comment on US hostage crisis off Somalia

What did obama actually do? He said "yes".
Then where did all the unwarranted criticism come from over him not doing anything or saying anything? Apparently it was fine to crucify the man when you thought he wasn't saying anything at all. It was just fine to get on here and predict what a failure he was going to make of this situation and find him guilty of being weak when some of you were only speculating what was on his mind or what he was doing. This thread was overrun with just brilliant observations from the "We Hate Obama" glee club. But when he did precisely what he was supposed to do and all ended well...it's "um big deal, okay, fine, he didn't really do anything...good for him I guess, it was the SEALs who did all the work so good for them, they are the heroes...this doesn't make Obama a hero, all he did was say yes."

Obama did what a good President does. He listened to his people and he made the right decision.

What happens next is what Obama needs to "do"
Of course, and I'm sure there will be a plethora of posts about what a failure he's going to be at this too...until he actually does something. Then it will be "yeah well all he did was listen to his military commanders and say 'yes' and how big a deal was that?...what really matters is what he does next."

Pirates Seize Egyptian Fishing Boats In Somaliland Waters | SomalilandPress

Kill them is my instant response.
A nice hanging and send them back to their host country in a box.
But we might as well get some money from them whilst we are at it.

Go anywhere near our waters, you should be killed. End of conversation.

If an Iranian ship entered US waters, do you think US would be 'escorting it away' - In my dreams maybe.

I don't think we would hold a merchant vessel hostage just for passing through our waters peacefully.

But sure...if Somalia wants to behave that way over its waters, I'm sure the rest of the world would be happy to not send any humanitarian aid to Somalia by ship either. We can just skirt around it entirely on our way to other civilized coutries and Somalia can die off without us ever taking notice.

Works for me.

Somaliland doesn't have territorial waters, and even if they did they did the proper response would be to escort them away, not arrest them and certainly not kill them. And were they fishing or just passing through? Can you show me one instance where foreign nationals have been killed by the US for fishing in our EEZ? No, you can't.

You're being hysterical.

Let me be clear, he did the right thing. I just don't think we should throw him a parade over it.

What next? There is hints that they are going to do what I suggested weeks ago and allow privateers to go there and hunt pirates. If this happens, I applaud him, this is the right thing and I would be 100% behind it.

besides, I am SOOOO getting a letter of Marque!

I can think of a dozen reasons why it's a bad idea to allow private citizens to commit murder for hire. But of course, logic has always been beyond your understanding.:2wave:

So the SEALS just committed murder? Is this your position?

Please list your "dozen reasons".

This signature I'm using is more than a joke, I believe it could be the solution against pirate attacks. Imagine if every ship cruising Somalian waters carried a military trained, freelance sniper.

So what is your opinion again?

So it's murder when a civillian does it, but not when seals do it, but you are for civillians acting as snipers on ships.

Please, your all over the map.

The crew of a ship is permitted to defend themselves with firearms. A guard hired by the ship would be considered part of the crew. That's different from allowing a boat full of gunmen to roam on their own, looking for a fight.

Actually under current maritime practices due to insurance, laws, and countries port laws, they are not.

Oh so we can only defend against pirates. Not attack them for one to be murder and the other not to be. Is this your new position now?

Somaliland doesn't have territorial waters.

Incorrect.

Somaliland is still known as Somalia and Somalia has territorial waters yes or no?

When someone enters SOMALI waters, it can be either Somaliland, Puntland or Somalia. It doesn't matter. It is still SOMALI territory.

Oh and i don't get hysterical, i find that to be a waste of time.

Nooooo..... private citizens are not, and should not be allowed to conduct their own killing sprees outside of international law. You disagree?

Man you change like the breeze....

So you are now for putting military on private ships now? Do you ever put forth a coherent point?

So if the military went pirate hunting would that be murder too?

oh I don't believe in the myth of "international law" I am an American.

Please:
Specify the 'international law' that covers ship crews killing pirates in defens eof their ship.
