North Korea failed in its attempt to get a satellite into space after a rocket launch early on Sunday, US and South Korean officials say.

Two stages of the rocket and its payload landed in the Pacific Ocean, a US military statement said.

Hours earlier North Korea claimed the satellite had successfully been put into orbit and was transmitting data.

The United States, Japan and South Korea suspect the launch was a cover for a long-range missile test.

They strongly condemned the launch. US President Barack Obama urged Pyongyang to "refrain from further provocative actions".

There going to try and build it again, i bet you. Hopefully the Japanese had the sense to go out to see and retrieve see, see if it really did have missiles i in it.

Obama gave a talk in France about forcing North Korea to stop weapons testing and he actually got applause...

Anyways, I think this shows more than anything the UN is a complete utter failure, and I think America should be the last nation to expect the Norks to lay down their arms. We don't even follow the international laws we help founded, what gives us the right to expect a nation that the past century has been bullied by Chinese, Russians, Japanese and most notably America. Some very large imperialistic nations have been ****ing with those people for a long time, and now we expect everything to be hunky doory, well guess what, unless you want war they are going to continue to do what is in there best interests.

If I was a Nork I would be trying to create nukes just to be left the hell alone.

What america requested from these rogue countries was very simple, peaceful, and would have been benificial to these countries in every way.

But their lunatic leaders don't care about their general populations economic well being and only have their self centered tyrannical desires.

What makes there leader a lunatic?

Your opinion of the man, or what he actually is doing?

North Korea has been bullied for the past century by many nations, it is only natural that they too would reach out for arms.

It is not our place to ask of them any of these things.

All america is trying to do is make the world a safer, better place by promoting free elections by these countries citizens so that the power and direction of their country is in the votes of the people.

These dictators would rather see their people suffer than to pass on the throne to a new leader.

This is so much more justified in the economic sphere than the political sphere, right?

How has North Korea been bullied? By giving them food? They starve their own people so they will have funds for a "communications" satellite, which I doubt ever existed in the first place. The load was likely a dummy/dudd. Now they can fire off another and claim that it is a second try to get their own satellite in orbit.
Beats me why an isolationist govt like NK wants to communicate with the rest of the world, only dear leader gets to view the online porn....

Articles Headline is misleading.
How did it -fail- again?

Analysts say NKorean rocket not a total failure-SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea's rocket may have fallen into the sea, but military experts cautioned Monday against calling it a complete failure, noting that it traveled twice as far as any missile the country has launched

Nobody's a slave in a free economy and the wealthy earned their wealth. The North Koreans are basically slaves. They work for nothing and get food rations and shoddy shelters. Exactly like a slave... Meanwhile their overlords live in luxury, with Kim possessing up to 17 palaces. Like a slave, they are not free to leave.

Anyway, the launch didn't fail. It was a success, just like the last one.

At 11:20 a.m. the satellite Kwangmyongsong-2, a shining product of self-reliance, soared into space by carrier rocket Unha-2. It was smoothly and accurately put into its orbit 9 minutes and 2 seconds after being completely separated from the carrier rocket.

We should drop leaflets of video frames of what the rocket really did so the slaves can see the lies of their government for themselves...:)

I'm not sure we have such frames. It was a cloudy day so we might not have been able to capture video. Supposedly we had surveillance planes up there so we might have, I don't know.... If we do I'm sure these guys would gladly chuck the images across the border:

Activists float leaflets criticising NKorea launch

SEOUL: South Korean activists Monday floated messages criticising Pyongyang's rocket launch across the tense border into North Korea, a day after the communist state's blast-off sparked international anger.

[...]

The balloons, released at Imjingak just south of the heavily fortified frontier, carried messages reading "Down with dictator Kim Jong-Il" and "Missile (development) while letting people starve is nonsense."

Not that they'd believe us... It'd just be viewed as "propaganda."

North Korea is bound by certain obligations which they chose to accept by entering the United Nations. If they don't like it, they can always pull out.

Oh ok, because you said it then it must be true.:doh

Do you have something constructive to contribute or are you going to try and argue that we're all slaves? Freedom is slavery, right?

The NK govt is claiming that the satellite is in orbit and working.....but the locals have no way of knowing. Their simple radios only receive govt propaganda broadcasts, and the simple people will be told that the satellite is working.
A member of the Pueblo crew was in one of my college night classes in the early 80's, he told us some interesting stories about how propagandized and ignorant the officers are, so the regular citizens are probably even more ignorant....

The thing is, when the Russians launched Sputnik they knew it was true. They knew it was true because they could see it and they could hear the radio transmissions. Our space observation equipment is infinitely more advanced now and nobody can see it. Nobody can hear this jingle that's supposedly being broadcast from the "satellite."

I was just offering a little perspective on the North Korean issue, and find it comical that many westerners - typically Americans - attempt to paint North Korea as this totalitarian prison nation filled with ultra-nationalist lemmings led by a clinically insane leader bent on destroying/taking over the world.

I don't think he is bent on destroying the world, and he knows he can't take it over, those are pretty much impossible for such a small country that isolates itself from the rest of the world. He just wants his daily dose of internet, the fine wines he imports, the good food at his table, all while his people suffer.
Much like the kings and queens of Europe in their day...

The comparison does not compute, simply because we are not slaves. Hell, if you find our system undesirable you can always move to the DPRK. They don't have that option.

Well, they are a nationalist totalitarian prison nation. The state controls every aspect of their lives. Dissidents are thrown in concentration camps or just flat-out executed. Any word critical of the regime is "subversion."

I'm not sure Kim Jong-Il is all he's cracked up to be. It seems to me that he's merely a puppet used to placate the masses. The real power is behind the scenes in the KWP and the military.

This is how "democracy" works in the DPRK.

Outside the central polling stations there were bands playing and people dancing and singing to entertain the queues of voters waiting patiently to select their representatives in the country's unicameral olegislature. The booths selling drinks and snacks were very popular with the crowds and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The list of successful candidates was published on Monday. There was a reported turn-out of over 99% of the voters and all the candidates, including Kim Jong Il, were elected with 100% approval.

And the North Koreans are.

What do you call it when you work for pretty much nothing, have no personal autonomy, and cannot leave, while your masters live lavish lives in their palaces and mansions?

I don't think I ever claimed that the DPRK was democratic.

"It had long been realized that the only secure basis for oligarchy is collectivism. Wealth and privilege are most easily defended when they are possessed jointly. The so-called 'abolition of private property' meant in effect the concentration of property in far fewer hands than before...with the result, forseen and intended beforehand, that economic inequality has been made permanent." -George Orwell [1984]
