Source [Pittsburgh Post Gazette | Officers killed, wounded in Stanton Heights standoff]

At least three Pittsburgh police officers were killed and possibly two others were wounded after a heavily armed man began firing at them as they responded to a domestic call this morning at a home in Stanton Heights.

The 22-year-old identified as Richard "Pop" Poplawski. who told friends he was wearing a bulletproof vest, surrendered to police about 11 a.m., more than three hours after the standoff began at 1016 Fairfield St. He was taken to UMPMC Presbyterian where his condition was not immediately available, but he told friends who spoke with him by telephone that he had been shot.

[...]

The incident began around 7:30 a.m. after officers went to the address and the suspect opened fire, police said.

Police Chief Nathan Harper said four officers initially were wounded when Mr. Poplawski fired an assault rifle. A fifth officer was wounded in a later burst of gunfire, the chief said.

For much of the morning, the standoff forced police to lock down the neighborhood as scores of officers converged on the house, where Mr. Poplawski had barricaded himself with at least one family member.

There seems to be another indiscriminate shooting every few days now. What the hell are these people trying to accomplish?

It's a shame, but there are crazy people out there and from time to time one of them pops. Regardless of whatever else is being said about it, it sounds like the root of the incident was domestic troubles.

Gunman 'lying in wait' kills 3 Pittsburgh officers

A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and "lying in wait" opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday, killing three of them and turning a quiet Pittsburgh street into a battlefield, police said.

Police Chief Nate Harper said the motive for the shooting isn't clear, but friends said the gunman recently had been upset about losing his job and feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.

I can't wait until Goobieman jumps in here saying : 'Still think that gun owners are paranoid?' :rofl:rofl. Anyways. Sad **** when one of these progun nuts decides to shoot up innocent people. But I'm sure we'll deter crazy people from doing crazy things by giving people who aren't crazy guns.

It's because of the terrible economy as of late. especcially since 663,000 lost their jobs last month, I'm sure there will be tons, tons more of this.

I had a discussion with a friend about four years ago who was explaining in great detail why he was predicting an economic collapse to snowball far worse than the "Great Depression"

Everything he said is right on the money....no pun intended..:)

Niven's Law: "There is no cause so right, that you can't find a fool following it if you look for one."

Nutters have used bombs, swords, machetes, poison, gas and etc to kill when they snap. Focusing on the tool takes eyes off the real problems.

It's so much more convenient to focus on the tools instead of the actions.. or the reasons behind the actions.

A tool can't stand up for itself.... or give reason behind it's action.

No, it's because people are ****ing ****heads who blame others for their failures in life. Blaming it on the economy is a copout. Plenty of people do **** like this when the economy is doing well.

Dude did this fearing his guns would be taken away. My comment about him being a progun nut stands.

It is always sad when people are killed while doing their jobs. Oh Wait! Some jobs come with a chance of getting killed on a daily basis! Being a cop is one of those jobs. Sad. But not unexpected. Just Saying.

What's your point?

Gas station cashiers run the risk of getting shot every day as well. Do you have the same attitude when they get shot, or is your disdain reserved specifically for policemen?

If you dislike what Goobie does so much, why are you doing precisely what he does, only from the other side?

Wow. This is really turning into my kind of country.

So? Are you saying progun "nuts" are going to run rampant shooting cops? Ted Kaczynski was a PhD mathematician....should we worry about mathematicians indiscriminately bombing people? Guy was crazy, that's all there is to it. Things like this happen from time to time, we've seem to have a few more than usual this week. But you're never going to 100% stop crazy people from having guns, not without some horrible and draconian methods and even those won't stop the crazy people and would probably prompt normal people to take up arms.

I would put it just a bit differently.

He was a nut.

He was also pro-gun.

There are pro and anti-gun nuts, Left and Right wing nuts, and just plain wingnuts.

There are nuts who kill with knives and hammers, machetes, bombs, poison, anthrax and gas (Aum Shin Ryo (sp?) comes to mind).

Three things were mentioned:
He had lost his job.
There was a "domestic disturbance".
He was concerned about an Obama gun-ban effort, allegedly.

Hatuey and the media have chosen to focus on one of the three things that might have been causal agents, the gun issue.

Perhaps we should ban layoffs and firings. A lot of people who go nuts and kill seem to do so after being fired.

Perhaps we should ban marriage... offhand I think more cops get hurt or killed responding to domestic disputes than anything else; also a fair number of mass murders are in reaction to domestic problems.
(/irony).

This guy was laying in wait for the cops. He could have accomplished his aim (killing cops) just as well with a homemade fougasse fragmentation bomb as with a gun. Again, focusing on the tool doesn't change the fact that he was a looney.

As someone pointed out, the Unabomber was a left-wing looney...but it would be idiotic to judge all Leftists to be potential mail-bombers, just as judging all gun owners according to the actions of a 1-per-million looney is idiotic.
