The UN has appointed South African judge and former war crimes prosecutor Richard Goldstone to lead a fact-finding mission to the Gaza Strip.

Mr Goldstone will investigate alleged violations of international law during the recent conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants.

Martin Uhomoibhi, president of the UN Human Rights Council, said the mission would be independent and impartial.

Israel calls the council biased and has previously refused to co-operate.

Mr Goldstone will lead a four-member team, which also includes experts from Pakistan, Britain, and Ireland, in investigating "all violations of international humanitarian law" before, during and after the Israeli campaign in Gaza that ended on 18 January.

"It's in the interest of the victims. It brings acknowledgment of what happened to them. It can assist the healing process," Mr Goldstone said.

"I would hope it's in the interests of all the political actors, too."

Yeah right. Good luck with that.

Just add it to the list.

Uncle Sam's big veto stick will see to it that Isreal comes out smelling like a rose.

The UN has no teeth.

Or balls. They'll bow down to uncle's wishes whatever the outcome. Imagine appointing a palestinian to research the war crimes? There would be an upheaval of Jewish protesting. Bloody zionists, they have everybody by the balls.

Of course, the UN would never investigate anything bad that Palistine might have done, because Palistine is always good and the Jews are evil, as everyone except the evil United States knows.

Thats true but i wouldnt point all the fingers at the Jews. Im sure Hamas commited a few war crimes during the war too, but lets see.

Are the crimes that took place in Gaza needs to achieve?
Or is it more than 1400 Palestinians have been killed for no reason?

U.S. policy unfair

I wonder if the UN has also sent a fact-finding mission to Afghanistan? Iraq? Sudan? Congo? Chechnya? Sri Lanka?

Nah.

International law seems to be the most poorly applied legal standard in the world.

Um... I was being sarcastic.

So if Mr. Goldstone is Jewish, and Israel has complained that the Human Rights Council is biased and refused to cooperate with them, I wonder if his appointment to this panel is an attempt to assuage some Israels fears and promote their cooperation?

Seriously, I'm not so keen on believing that all Jews conspire to conceal the crimes of their people simply because it's another Jew committing the crime. I'd not assume that Goldstone is an Israeli agent simply because he's Jewish.

What I'm more interested in is if this panel will actually investigate all allegations regardless of which side is accused. The situation in Gaza is a long, bloody two way street.

The UN was conceived so that we could control the idiot tyrannts in the Third World .

To be a little more specific, the United Nations replaced the League of Nations in 1945. The original purpose of this organization was to prevent wars between nations, not police third world dictators. The principal is very noble, the execution however has been sorely lacking. It was never set up properly.

Unfortunately, an organization like the U.N. will always be ineffective as long as you have member nations with veto power that have drastically differing political ideologies and powerful self-interests in how the world should look.

In my thinking, NATO was a much better arm for peacekeeping/peacemaking. Just like I'm sure the Russia felt the Warsaw Pact was more beneficial towards their interests.

In late 2008, the United Nations did not respond at all to a formal complaint by Israel concerning the increasing rocket attacks by Hamas. The UN sent no investigator, dispatched no team, and issued no warning to Hamas.

Now the UN is interested? If they had done even the bare minimum in the lead-up to war, the Israeli response could probably have been avoided. The UN itself bears a good portion of the responsibility due to its malfeasance and ineptitude.

Well what could they have done?

To put things in the perspective around 20 people have died during the last years from the rockets launched from Palestine. Over thousand people have died from Israel intervention into Gaza. Also Israel had a blockade against Gaza that didn't just stop guns but also food and medicine. Of course the rockets against Israel was bad, but can be good to put things in perspective.

You don't believe me?

Given that the vast majority of third world countries didnt exist, let alone have dictators when the UN was conceived I may need some convincing...

20 dead is 20 too many.

You also miss the point. Although asked by Israel, the "peacekeeping" UN did absolutely nothing to avert this war. If they had, most if not all of the dead Gazans would still be alive.

Have you got a link showing Israel asking the ¨peacekeeping¨ UN to help avert this War?
Thanks

The UNHRC is a big-time joke. It should be renamed the "Defend Islam, Bash Israel Council." The world should just ignore the abuses of Islamist regimes because criticizing their actions is "defamation of religion." Watch out for those monstrous Jewish savages.

Google it. Israel filed a formal complaint about the escalating rocket attacks with the UN in late 2008. The UN did nothing.

Sending in the UN with their "no first shot" idiocy would be tantamount to suicide for the peacekeeping force, anyway.
