Obama issues warning as North Korea readies rocket

Obama issues warning as North Korea readies rocket
WASHINGTON (AP) - As North Korea fueled a multistage rocket Thursday for its threatened satellite launch, President Barack Obama promised a "stern" response and Japan vowed to press for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood would not address the U.S. intelligence reports. But he repeated earlier warnings for the North Koreans not to take any "provocative" actions.

Japan's ambassador to the U.N. said his nation will request an emergency session of the Security Council if North Korea proceeds with the launch. Yukio Takasu said he raised the possibility during closed-door council talks Thursday.

Takasu and other council diplomats say they anticipate a possible emergency session as early as this weekend.

Some U.S. lawmakers are urging Obama to shoot down the rocket if it endangers the United States or its allies. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said during a weekend TV interview that the U.S. had no plans to intercept the rocket—though it might consider the move if an "aberrant missile" were headed to Hawaii "or something like that."

I'm SURE that North Korea has seen this response, and has decided to immediately de-fuel their bird and pull it off the pad.

"You better not launch that rocket, cause I'll get really really mad!"

Order Chinese take-out, bring in strippers, embezzle funds, then grandstand and release a worthless press statement condemning N Korea.

The real news here is that the Obama adiministration actually used the word "rocket". I'm sure he has a team working on new terminology that doesn't project such a negative connotation as he embraces N Korea and tries to find a way to blame Bush for this crisis.

Rocket was the romanticized semantic used in lieu of missile.

wouldn't be amazed if it was Russia or China who was aiding them.

Are you still living in the Cold War? China is justifiably worried about its insane and dangerous neighbor, and Russia has absolutely no reason whatsoever to get involved.

Then why is China blocking security council resolutions against North Korea?

Then why is China blocking security council resolutions against North Korea?

Because they don't want anyone else getting involved with their neighbor. China doesn't support U.S. aims in Korea, but that doesn't make it a friend of North Korea. The enemy of your enemy is not always your friend. There is a big difference between blocking a security council resolution and actively giving missile technology that might be turned on its provider.

What is the purpose of the Obama bashing in this thread?
It seems to me he is following the same routine that every other President would... and that is "noooooo donnnnttttttttt". It looks bad if you don't reject the readying of a rocket when your foreign policy considers that nation-state to be an evil empire.

And what would you advise, oh mighty master of military strategy? Silence? A full-scale invasion? Tell me, what tools besides stern warnings does Obama have at his disposal? Or is it merely that he can't open his mouth without you shooting criticism at him? He deserves quite a bit of criticism, of course, but he's doing the right thing - well, the only thing - here.

Obama is doing what he needs to do. He's signaling disapproval of this launch. Our forces in the area are on alert. What else is he supposed to do? There is not enough solid evidence to prove this launch requires preemptive military action. There is no doubt in my mind that Obama stands ready to take appropriate military steps should that become necessary.

Actually China is North Korea's closest ally, largest trading partner, and biggest supplier of weapons, fuel, and food. They have supported the North Korean government since it's birth. That won't change, not because of this. Like a father scolding a reckless son, China will most likely tell others to keep their hands off and chastise Kim Jong-Il over his actions. They are less concerned with Pyongyang's internal politics than they are with the possible results of a military conflict, even if very limited. The refugees will most likely flee towards China if conflict breaks out. China doesn't want that. Nor do they want North Korea launching any kind of ground assault against the South. That kind of conflict is bad for business, and make no mistake...China would not let Pyongyang fall to U.S./ROK forces. China and NK are allies, politically, militarily, and financially.

I looked at the thread starter when I opened the forum and knew immediately that he and his posse would be on a tear in here. There seems little Obama can do right by them regardless of what he does. Had he said nothing they would most likely be calling him a coward, had he gotten more aggressive they would probably say he's needlessly provoking NK. This is their thing. I was particularly amused by this ridiculous comment...

Typical worthless tripe that does nothing to intelligently contribute to the actual discussion of the topic.

Agreed. All he or anyone else can do is stand ready to action should this launch prove to be primarily military in nature or threatening in any way.

The intent of the OP was not to actually discuss the situation, it was a hollow attempt to simply demean Obama in some fashion. There was little thought put into it, you can tell simply by reading the thread starters first post. This is reinforced by the anemic pile on attempt by his cronies. The post violated Breaking News thread rules from the start.

Then why is China blocking security council resolutions against North Korea?

Because as we both know, that's what allies do for each other. China is shielding North Korea and I'm sure trying to deescalate from behind the curtain.

China has supplied North Korea with a large amount of military resources. As such, North Korea has developed a very efficient military R&D program of their own. No need to supply them with missiles if you gives them the tools and technology to let them produce them in house.

No, that's correct. North Korea is the cork in the bottle, keeping the US allied South Korea away from their border. They would be extremely uncomfortable with the US Eighth Army right on the Chinese border.

Obama can't do or say anything that means anything regarding this coming test. I think the guy is a flaming idiot, but this matter is totally out of America's hands. He has to say something to satisfy the media, but I don't see any point in paying attention to it.

Funny coming from you, the popinjay who follows blindly behind the Harvard educated "genius" who has coined "man caused disaster" instead of terrorism, and "overseas contingency operations" in favor of war on terror. :lamo

The only worthless tripe here, is your 4 posts in which you bloviate the obvious.

So at some point will you ever decide to provide anything resembling intelligent commentary related to the topic at hand? Or can we expect more of the same? Wait, no need to answer that. Once again, GH finds himself:sinking:

Agreed, we already learned that lesson once before.

But he has to take a position, not just because of the media however. This has to do with standing in some kind of solidarity with our allies. Given the extreme nervousness of Japan and South Korea, simply remaining silent would not be a good thing.

I actually believe that positioning our warships in the area to potentially intercept the missile is a smart move. It sends a message that NK's saber rattling won't dictate U.S. naval operations nor our ability to take action if we deem it necessary.

The funny thing is that if this had happened six months ago and the name in the article was "Bush" instead of "Obama," you would be falling all over yourself to praise his tough talk against North Korea, and you would accuse anyone who dissented of being a communist-loving appeaser.

What exactly do you want Obama to do?

The answer here is quite simple and very apparent. Fail. At any cost to this nation, he wants him to fail.

Wow, you're so creative, and original in thought. :doh

This thread needs no serious consideration, it's about Obama being the mouthpiece for his military advisors, nothing more.

Obama has clearly demonstrated to the people of this country that he's not even qualified to be a community organizer, as evidenced by his poor judgement, not only in his appointments, but in his decision making in regard to legislation vital to the future of our country.

You keep bloviating though, and I'll keep laughing at you. You truly are the Barney Frank of DP.com.

What do you think Obama should do about North Korea launching this rocket?
