BRUSSELS —
Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals face widespread harassment, bullying and discrimination across Europe, according to an EU report released Tuesday.

That harassment and discrimination occurs "in all areas of social life," from schools to the workplace to health care centers, the report by the EU's Fundamental Rights Agency said.

Agency Director Morten Kjaerum said the investigation found gays and lesbians continue to face assault and other physical attacks due to their sexual orientation despite EU rules meant to guarantee equality in the 27-nation bloc.

"These are alarming signals in an EU that prides itself on its principles of equal treatment and nondiscrimination," he told reporters at the European Parliament.

The report said gay pride events were being obstructed in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Romania. Meanwhile, politicians and religious leaders in Italy, Hungary, Malta, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have also rejected calls to improve the rights of gays and lesbians.

Kjaerum said, according to the scarce data available from national authorities, "very few incidents" of assault, hate speech by public figures or verbal attacks are reported to police.

Current laws meant to protect against discrimination also do not cover areas such as housing, education or health care, he noted.

The report, which compiled studies and surveys from across Europe, said homophobic abuse is usually carried out by young men in groups, but is also persistent at work, in school or when trying to get medical care.

Kjaerum appealed to EU nations to improve equality legislation, to better record hate crimes "and to train police accordingly." The agency also recommended better awareness campaigns to promote diversity and fight discrimination

Wow....lol....funny. I think this pretty much ends the image of Europe being at all "progressive", or as I like to say, "cowardice".

Well Eastern Europe and Italy.

I can't blame them for blocking those parades. If they bare any resemblance to the obscene San Fransisco gay pride parades, they're doing a disservice to gays anyway.

This is a funny own goal subject haha.

Lets see what we got here..

Former Iron Curtain countries, where being homosexual got you put in a gulag... like that attitude changes overnight...

Former Iron Curtain countries, where the Orthodox and Catholic Church have resurged after decades of oppression.... and where is it exactly these 2 churches stand on homosexuality? Aint it a sin that they deep down want to be punished by death?

The Catholic and Orthodox Church, the 2 organisations that have promoted anti gay legislature and attitudes across the planet since.. forever. Who was it that was opposed to the "gay marriage" laws in places where it was passed.. oh yea, the church!

The Catholic Church, one of the main backers of the US religious rights drive to deny and punish homosexual behaviour in the US of A...all in the while where its own priests play with small boys....

Oh and lets not forget Italy, a country where the Catholic Church still has a lot of weight, but also where the ugly face of far right facisim yet again has shown its face in the tanned hair pluged face of Silvo Berlosconi. But to be fair to the Italian facists (and that is far from every single Italian btw.), they are not only targeting homosexuals, but also other undesirables, like Muslims, Romany, Africans, any non Italian and soon probably even Jews.

While this report is most likely accurate because it is a problem in those places because of the issues I stated and I dont deny it one bit, this was a lame attempt by the OP to "nail" all of Europe for the actions of a few nations. You could at least have chosen a better subject to "nail" Europe with, considering the US's and the Republican parties track record in harassment of homosexuals

Totally agree my friend.........

If gays cannot be integrated into the U.S. military because anti-gay sentiment exists in Europe, does it follow that Jews cannot be integrated into the U.S. military because anti-Semitic sentiment exists in Europe?

Based on my understanding of military indoctrination... soldiers are trained to work as a team. And therefore we expect black and white soldiers to work together, or Catholic and Jewish, or northerner and southerner. Any soldiers who demonstrate during training that they are incapable of putting aside these kind of prejudices, and incapable of working together as a team, are rejected. Or did I miss something along the way? Would a basic trainee who refused to work alongside Jewish soldiers in his unit be allowed to serve in the U.S. military?

Anti-Semitism: Why You Should Be Alarmed
From the May/June 2009 Trumpet Print Edition »

“Jews to the gas.” “Jews to the oven.” “Kill the Jews.”

These are standard sentiments in the streets of Tehran and Gaza City. But earlier this year, those chilling slogans, chanted by tens of thousands, echoed up and down the streets of London, Paris and Amsterdam.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Do you think the gay pride parade is worse than say... Carnival, or Mardi Gras? I've seen the gay pride parade many times since we lived in Marin county for 15 years.

Surely, these guys represent the gay community right?

Cause we all know that all gays are flaming, flamboyant twinks. Right?

That was a rhetorical question, right? Of course they think gay pride is worse than Carnival or Mardi Gras... because hot lesbians in wet t-shirts aren't usually dancing at Gay Pride.

Spring break oil wrestling is another favorite. Parading around half-naked in public is acceptable if you're a hot nubile female pretending to be a lesbian. If you're a gay man, or a real lesbian, such sexual displays are outrageous.

:2wave:

You certainly didn't answer the question.

But what's your beef with those pictures? Because they are bare chested men? Are you sure you're not just another closet homosexual bashing gays to make yourself feel better?

How does the gay pride parade adversely effect you, are you a street cleaner in SF? :rofl

It doesn't adversely affect me. I could care less. It does give gays in general a bad image. Mardi Gras is not meant to be an expression of "straight pride." It's a time to indulge and have fun before entering the Season of Lent, in which we Christians make sacrifices. Unfortunately, it's developed into an orgy in New Orleans.

He's just jealous because he probably looks like the guy in the last shot instead of the guys in the first 4. :rofl

You lost me on the first para...Jews can serve in the U.S. Miitary

I agree with you but this has nothing to do with gays serving openly........

As bad as the mardi gras is gay parades are much worse..............

It has everything to do with gays serving openly. The premise of your thread is refuted by the very fact that Jews ARE fully integrated into our military... just as are Blacks, Muslims, Native Americans, and many other minorities. The fact that there is bigotry against these groups in society has not prevented their successful inclusion into the Armed Forces.

;)

One huge difference..........All those nationalities were born that way....They are defined by their race or nationality..............That does not apply to gays who are defined by a choice they make...........

Did you choose to be heterosexual?

I know I sure didn't.

There are numerous cases of Gays who changed so it must be a choice........Lets try and stay on topic though.......This thread is not about whether being gay is a choice............

I wasn't aware that being Jewish or Muslim is an inherited trait. Would you permit discrimination in the armed forces against those who chose to be Jewish, but not those who were 'born' into the Jewish faith?

;)

No, not at all, I would let any woman or man who meets the requirements enter our military which is the way it currently is...........

Can we get back on topic..........thanks.........
