PROMISES, PROMISES: Obama tax pledge up in smoke

WASHINGTON (AP) - One of President Barack Obama's campaign pledges on taxes went up in puffs of smoke Wednesday.
The largest increase in tobacco taxes took effect despite Obama's promise not to raise taxes of any kind on families earning under $250,000 or individuals under $200,000.

This is one tax that disproportionately affects the poor, who are more likely to smoke than the rich.

To be sure, Obama's tax promises in last year's campaign were most often made in the context of income taxes. Not always.

"I can make a firm pledge," he said in Dover, N.H., on Sept. 12. "Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."

He repeatedly vowed "you will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime."

Now in office, Obama, who stopped smoking but has admitted he slips now and then, signed a law raising the tobacco tax nearly 62 cents on a pack of cigarettes, to $1.01. Other tobacco products saw similarly steep increases

Another example of a liberal politician lying to the people in order to get elected.

Some "change".

Que Obama apologists and "he has only been in office two months" squad.....

Let those good patriotic souls smoke a pack a day as well. After all, this is the era of "shared sacrifice"....

The plan looks pretty straight forward to me, but then again, I'm cynical.

By increasing the tax on cigarettes, the poor who can barely afford health care, will choose their habit over their premium, thus creating even more people who'll need UHC.

Those tricky democrats...

One of the reasons is prevention of new younger smokers. Studies show that less younger people will take on smoking if it's more expensive.

There's a difference between not fulfilling a promise within two months and breaking a promise within two months.
He has a Dem Congress, what's the hangup?

Prolly that he has a Dem Congress. Clinton got his best stuff passed with a Republican Congress.

Again, he is speaking of income taxes which is why he is calling out salary levels specifically. There are no other taxes that can be controlled based on income level.

I disagree with regressive taxes like this and I I agree with gibberish too.

I agree that that's probably what he was referring to for the most part, but...

Obama is a liar.

Obama is a liar.

Wow what a contribute.

Care to elaborate how or just make one liners to be dismissed?

It's right there in my post. His words vs. his actions (see: the subject of this thread).
He lied. You disagree?

Yes I do disagree, he hasn't lied, he said he would do that some time in his presidency, not in two months.

I guess I just don't see income, business, and other mandatory taxes the same as opt-in on commodity taxes such as cigarette, alcohol, and gambling. You choose to pay the latter taxes.

"This man is my life teacher. He led me to Christ. Married me to my wife and blessed my children. He is an uncle to me. For the past 20 years I have been present in his church and followed his teachings."

....

"GODDAMN AMERICA"

...

"I never noticed"

After that its amazing anyone trusts a word he says.

And how does this make Obama a liar when he didn't say Goddamn America?

Which is the premise of this thread unless you are derailing it.

I'm showing how Obama is a practiced overt liar. His 20 years "never noticed" is his most pathetic transparant overt lie. Just one of many.

You haven't proved anything, only showed conspiracy theories. Again Obama plans could be implemented over ANYTIME in his presidency. If at the end of his presidency he doesn't enact or try to enact his policies, then I will agree with you. Until then, go whimper like most of the conservatives and cry to your mommies.

He said he would do what?

1. I showed he lied about not noticing his pastor. Showing how he has a history of such actions.

2. I showed he stated over and over no tax increases of any kind for those under 250k followed by hims signing a Tax increase which does exactly that.

I presented no conspiracy theories at all.

Your claim he can raise taxes every day until the very last day then lower them making his promises real. Is just ridiculous.

Your last sentence is what I expect to read form people who spend to much time cheering and not enough time listening.

I know you won't accept this ..yet...but Obama is a user not a leader.
