From the Wednesday, March 25 NBC Nightly News:

We wanted to take a moment tonight to note a stunning turn of events in Iraq. As you might have noted, there was not one question about the war in last night's presidential news conference. While it has been crowded off the national radar of late, the level of violence in Iraq has thankfully fallen sharply. A military spokesman there said today the number of attacks has dropped to the lowest level since the month following the U.S. invasion six years ago now -- from a peak of more than 1,200 attacks a week, to what is now often fewer than 100 a week.

And we learned today there's no more Global War on Terror -- at least it's been renamed by the Obama administration. The Pentagon will now call the ongoing U.S. military effort the Overseas Contingency Operation.

Next 4 years are the enemies. He has the initiative.

Why don't they call it the Concerted Underfunded Contingency Operations Overseas, or CUCOO, for short?

I wonder if our soldiers when being shot at by the "man-made disasters" realize they are not fighting a WAR but instead a "overseas contingency operation".

Nobody can have any confidence in people who are not only afraid to address their enemies as what they are but go to such absurd levels as this to play wordage games.

Its unbelievably stupidity.

War on Terrorists would be more appropriate, IMHO.

Believing you can successfully annihilate an ideology, or even just remove said ideology from a region it has thrived in for thousands of years, is equally stupid.

Legitimizes their efforts as not being terrorist in nature but legitimate action.

Its also harms Morale. You don't sit in the back renaming the enemy you have been fighting for years, dismissing his acts with frivolous wordage, not even calling it a war, or worse demeaning your own soldiers in Iraq and expect the morale of your military to remain high.

It also validates the enemies claims that they can break the USA. Nothing says that is true more then the USA itself playing wordage games 7 years into a war(oh excuse me a "contingency operation"

1. Harms Allied forces morale.
2. Harms Allies views of US commitment to the War.
3. Validates some Enemy claims about the USA. (IE they run)
4. Makes the War seem frivolous.
5. Undermines the war effort across the board.
6. Validates the enemy politically.
Etc., etc,

Next week using the word DEAD, or Killed In Action, etc will "offend"...

The people who play these word games clearly cannot face reality. They should resign or be removed asap from their offices. Their flippancy and frivolous treatment adversly affect the war effort and worse indirectly play a part in the deaths caused by it.

Hear that Obama?

(The reality of Japan and Germany today make your claim mute. Not to mention thousands of years of human history that have shown numerous ideologies and religion exterminated from regions)

You mean suspension of life and suspension of life activity.

Quite the opposite. Most of the world's great ideologies have been annihilated, generally by conquering civilizations or barbarian tribes.

Really you mean like how Nazism has been completely defeated? How long ago was that one and it is STILL around.

As far as I know none of this was ever a war; no war has been declared. The only war that the United States is currently in (as far as I know) is the Korean War.

Korea never declared either.

The last relevant LEGAL United States Declaration of War was in 1941 against the "Axis Powers" of Germany and Japan. This legal declaration was extended to a few satellite regimes (Bulgaria Hungary, & Romania) in '42, but that was "housekeeping" with regards to the already initiated campaign.

Well, Nazism is still around in much the same way that the Vikings are still around... a bunch of dudes who like to play dress up on weekends and collect old relics. Or do you believe Nazism is still a viable ideological or cultural force in the world today?

The case was made earlier that ideologies which have existed for 'thousands of years' cannot be stomped out. Well, yes they can. Which is why only scholars today can decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, or Stonehenge. And why slavery, as an institution supported by the state, has been eradicated universally.

The Mayas and Aztecs and Incas, along with their unique ideologies and cultures were wiped out.

In fact, most of the world's great cultures, and their ideologies, have crumbled. The Greeks, pre-Christian Romans, Byzantines, Mesopotamians... all long gone. A few stone remnants remain. But ideology? Only memories.

;)
