Four Police Officers Shot in Oakland, California

OAKLAND, Calif. — Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.

Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.

The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic.

At about 3:30 p.m. officers, acting on an anonymous tip, found the suspect, who had barricaded himself in a building.

"We had SWAT officers go into that building and that's where the second shooting took place," said Thomason.

The suspect was killed during the exchange, and two more officers wounded.

That doesn't constitute a very effective "riot." They should have brought hockey sticks like the Seattle WTO protesters did...send those gas canisters right back at them.

Any "riot" which is prepared for in advance to that extent is not a "riot" at all, but what you would call a "direct action" and what I would call "raping and pillaging."

I believe it's in response to this:

Oscar Grant Death: BART Officer Mehserle Arrested (VIDEO)

The video is pretty clear. I can't see any reason why the cop should have shot the guy. The cop was later arrested in Nevada.

Excellent video. Thank you. You can tell by the expression on the cop's face that it was an accident. He's being investigated right now. It seems he was negligent by not exercising proper trigger discipline. Either that or it was pure impulse. Why'd he even pull his gun out at all? We'll see what happens.

Edit: I dunno, the more times I watch this the more it seems like this was not an accident.

You asked the most important question in all this...

"Why'd he even pull his gun out at all?"

I don't get on the whole "bash the cops" bandwagon, but that son of a bitch needs to fry.

It's hard to tell. He jolts back as though he is surprised about the weapon's discharge. The difference is that between second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Obviously he had no reason to pull out his gun at all. His actions afterward are telling. He rolls a man he just shot in the back onto his back. I don't know how I would react in such a situation, but clearly that wasn't the most empathetic thing to do.

Accident or not, the BART cop was at the very least negligent. He'll do time no doubt. Deservedly so. Community anger is understandable. It's unfortunate that so many are willing to take advantage of that kind of justifiable anger to create an unjustifiable street fight.

Forgive me Grammar Nazis, for I have sinned.

Forgive me Grammar Nazis, for I have sinned.

Grammar Nazis just want to maintain standards.

Four for "for" isn't worrisome for me. You know the difference, you just slipped.

Then/than & too/to are my pet peeves.

And back to the topic, Oakland is a rough town. East Oakland particularly so.

Re: Four California Police Officers in Critical Condition, Suspect Dead After Traffic

The BART shooting makes me sick to my stomach. It seems to be accidental, but that doesn't change the fact the guy is dead. Hopefully justice will be done in that case.

And I agree, let's all pray for these four brave cops and their families.

Yeah it's a shame.

Look at those beautiful eyes. I think his family could use some prayers as well.

That's too sad.

Re: Four California Police Officers in Critical Condition, Suspect Dead After Traffic

Why do people keep on referring to the BART shooting as if it's related to this? As far as I can tell, there's absolutely no connection between the two.

It was brought up in a list of why Oakland is teh suck.

People lingered at the scene of the first shooting. About 20 bystanders taunted police.

Tension between police and the community has risen steadily since the fatal shooting of unarmed 22-year-old Oscar Grant by a transit police officer at an Oakland train station on Jan. 1.

Whether or not Mixon shot the cops because of the BART incident will probably never be known. But it's obvious that the BART incident is weighing heavily on the minds of the black people in Oakland.

Re: Four California Police Officers in Critical Condition, Suspect Dead After Traffic

Sorry to hear what happened to those officers. All over the US, these guys are out there, and sometimes they put their lives on the line to keep order. Yea, I know about the BART shooting. These officers were not that officer. To bring the 2 together is a lot like saying that all Irishmen are drunks (maybe a bad example there - LOL), all Germans are Nazis, or all Hispanics are illegal aliens. IMHO, those in the crowd who were taunting the cops after the shooting deserve no cops coming to them in their time of need. Then they would see how important the cops are to them. Their actions today were shameful. Some kids' fathers died, and these bozos cheer? Sheesh!! Disgusting. That's all I can say. I want to say more, but I don't want to be responsible for sending this thread to the Basement because I did say more.

1 cop left. I hope he survives.

Glocks suck. They have no mercy for poor finger control.

Officials said the suspect was on parole after being convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and was also wanted on a no-bail warrant. Officials did not explain the nature of the warrant.

3 Oakland officers killed, one critically hurt

Re: Four California Police Officers in Critical Condition, Suspect Dead After Traffic

Huh. Apparently, this is also one of the rare cases of a crime being committed with an assault rifle.

I'll say a prayer for them tonight. Reckon if they didn't already have plans for the afterlife, they've earned their seats in Valhalla.

Re: Four California Police Officers in Critical Condition, Suspect Dead After Traffic

See I love my Glocks (my current weapon of choice) because the trigger pull is so consistent from shot to shot. I have carried a 1911 (for years it was my weapon of choice as a cop), Beretta M9 (as an MP), and SIG (for a short time as a personal off duty weapon). Of all these pistols I would take a 1911 over a Glock, but I just hate carrying that thing cocked and locked for some reason anymore (and I won't carry it in half-**** or hammer down). The 1911 was just so easy to shoot and quite accurate, I loved it. But the first shot trigger pull of the Beretta and the SIG was just too long for me (the double action mode) and the follow up shots always had a just smidge of play in the trigger pull. The Glocks however are consistent from first to last shot. No safety, but I don't really care about that. I have become very proficient with my Glocks.

Anti-gun folks are going to quietly pick up on this I bet.

Re: Four California Police Officers in Critical Condition, Suspect Dead After Traffic

Yea, I read the articles. The question posed was why this incident was being connected to the BART incident on New Years eve.

My response was we won't really know, but given the current mindset of the black community in Oakland, it's not unreasonable to understand their fears when dealing with the cops in Oakland right now.
