Pope condemns sexual violence against women

Yeah? How about his statements about keeping your pants zipped up outside of a committed marital relationship, which will save people's lives?
Yeah, that stinking Nazi, what does he know? ;)

The fact that the church attempted to diminish her by purposely turning her into a whore is no small thing.:

You are being ridiculous. Pope Gregory is not "the Church."

Oh ok. Let's just pretend the Pope isn't the earthly head of the Roman Catholic Church, the head of the state when it comes to the Vatican, and the authority on Church doctrine and leadership. While we're at it we can also pretend that popes from long ago had even less power than popes of today and that they didn't interfere with politics and have close interaction and sway with monarchs and government.

That will all be fitting in the overall delusion that the Church was never misogynistic.

You clearly lack understanding of the role of the pope, the difference between an individual and the Church, sexism and misogyny, and theology and politics.:doh:roll:

Misogyny means "woman hate."

misos "hatred" (from misein "to hate") + gyne "woman"

Simple sexism is not misogyny.

You guys are throwing the word Woman-hater at the Church and you don't know what you mean?

Do you wonder why it might be offensive to accuse a whole religion of hate, if you really only mean that there was "typical sexist views?" That is a TOTALLY different charge than misogyny!

Accept my apology. Misogyny was clearly the wrong word for me to use. I don't mean that the Church hates women. I merely meant that the Church is sexist.

My bad.:3oops:

Ah, but the eating fish is supposed to be giving up the luxury of meat. Anyone could catch a fish back in the day.

Don't forget Joe's Crab Shack. :2razz:

I have had real sea food from the coasts. It is good. Here in the midwest, not as good, unless you catch your own fresh fish, but it's different fish.

Hey, I grew up eating in lobster houses where you could actualy see them pulling the lobster from the wharf directly into the restaurant.

Pope Gregory went off on her, lambasted her, in a sermon on morals. Called her not just a sinner but claimed that Mary Magdalene was the same Mary in the Bible from whom 7 devils were cast out. In the sermon he went on to say that the 7 devils represented the 7 capital sins she was guilty of. Her reputation as a whore is traced back to Gregory and essentially blamed on Pope Gregory by every source I've looked at. The "sinner" part would not have made a whore. We're all sinners. It was the 7 capital sins part that was so slanderous. Not only did Pope Gregory morph 2 different Marys into one person he went a step further and amped up the story by equating the casting out of 7 demons as confirmation of the presence of 7 capital/deadly sins. He then went through and listed them making Mary guilty of pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia, ". From Gregory's sermon on her reputation was forever tarnished and not corrected by the church till a long while later. She was celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church for being a penitent all the way up until 1969 when revisions were finally made Roman Missal and Mary was no longer the woman who reformed herself after committing the 7 deadly sins.

Do you actually have a source that Pope Gregory referred to her as a whore? - you made the initial claim. Fact is, the Pope did NOT refer to her as a "whore", he referred to her as a sinner (which we ALL are.) You can't back up the initial claim. Your bigoted hatred for the Church and inability to stick to the facts is noted.

I also think the sexism is not "the Church," but rather the result of some people in the Church--but thank you for the apology.

We'll probably have to agree to disagree then. And that's OK if we disagree. I think it is institutionally sexist. I would like to hear you specifically tell me what differences make women unsuitable for Priesthood.

I mean seriously, you are like The Madre of DebatePolitics. This isn't a knock on Ludahai because he knows his stuff too. You definitely have done your homework. You testify more than anyone else here at DP. In fact, I would go so far as to say that not one man here is more knowledgeable about the Catholic Church than you are.

This thread has the links to the documents specifically explain in grand detail why men are the only ones suited for the priesthood theologically, but I suppose I could do a St. Cliff's Notes on it. I'll see what I can compile.

I would appreciate it. There is some very lengthy material you have linked to that I really don't have the time to sift through.

I thought she already did? Wasn't it something about how women are receptive by nature? Which can basically be paraphrased," Women have a vagina and not a penis." An opening for receiving and not a phallus for entering. They're made so you can stick it to them, they can't stick it to you. You know the Floyd song, "How can you have any pudding when you don't eat your meat?" It's like that only, "How can you be a priest when you don't have a penis! You can't be a priest when you don't have a penis. "

But that's not to say they're sexist or misogynistic or anything. <snicker snicker>

Women can't be priests because when God was asked how many women he wanted to be priests, he said "Women? There will be None"

That's how Nuns were invented.

What do you call a nun who has had sex? A some.

I don't take is as a knock. Felicity knows her stuff. She is of a more theological bent than I am. I am more historical in my interests.

We are the Dogmatic Duo!!!

I've started it, but thought I out to make it its own thread in Religion/Philosophy.
