Obama sorry for disability remark

I don't think half of them even knew her politics. I'm not surprised that special ed teachers would not have been impressed w/a republican no matter what they say or do. It's disconcerting that some of the most close minded people in the work force are educating our children.

Your entire post is incredibly accurate, but the bold couldn't have been stated better.

Johnny Carson became an American cultural icon. The "Late Show" "Tonight Show", however you wish to approach it, is an important example of American culture. I thought it would have been obvious why the American people (including your leaders) feel so attached to that venue.

So in other words, you are just saying it shouldn't be, even though the political system and marketing speak otherwise about the usefulness of such appearances. Then, once presented with historical examples of two Presidents without going into any others that controlled their image in such a way (by the way, because of the political climate in which Democrats were perceived to have lost China to communism, there was just a wee bit of pressure to keep involved in Vietnam), you dismiss them as bad leaders, to therefore keep your thesis.

Keeping good appearance is good for the politically inept and the politically swoonable, and the politically eligible voters, and it's good for posterity (ask any political historian). Having good appearance does not mean one is politically inept, it's a separate means of maintaining an agenda and a lasting legacy, and deep down, having some fun.

It's merely idealism to suggest that a politician can get by through his or her sheer brilliance of the issues, which is why I have to be amused.

America has benefited greatly from Chinese Communism, Kennedy went to Vietnam because he did not like communism. Being from one of America's richest families, the Kennedy's stood to lose a lot if this idea of stateless society become popular in the states.

As for your amusement, **** you amusement.

Go watch The Three Stooges if you want to be amused, I'm not saying that the president shouldn't make appearances but Leno's show is a really expensive infomercial with a comedy routine.

When the president is making appearances on shows like these it makes Americans look like a joke.

As for Johnny Carson, are you saying that just making someone a cultural icon makes it ok for the president to go on there show. Being relevant cultural does not warrant the the presidents time.

Solving America's problems aren't on Jay Leno's coach, and I could careless about him having fun as president.

What's the new problem?

What do you do to educate those with special needs (though the question would have been phrased differently in a different time)?

1. I was talking about half of the issue for why we had involvement (but limited) with Vietnam. You can't discount the influence that has.
2. Of course Kennedy believed in the domino theory. You still do not want a nation to fall into the hands of the communists, or else political repercussions would also follow.
3. Good suggestion. I'll rent them sometime. I haven't seen them in ages!
4. Of course it has comedy in it. So what? It's a good venue for lightening the impeding doom of politics while reaching millions of Americans at the same time.
5. I'm sure it does make us look like a joke....except it doesn't. Firstly, if you want a good afternoon nap, I suggest watching C-SPAN's coverage of one of our best branches of government. Then go out and find some House of Commons footage. Blasted humor for getting in the way of good policy.
6. To a degree, yes. Representatives on Bill Maher, Bill Clinton on MTV, leaders announcing candidacies on ______ late show....it's a medium that has become a classic of American television audiences. It's not new, it's not entirely hip. It's mainstream American entertainment. How silly does the President look while throwing the opening pitch during a game? Depends on his skill, but do many people complain? Why not? I would hope it had something to do with how baseball is an American past time, and darn it, they would gosh darn like it if so and so threw a baseball instead of being an uptight doo-doo head.

I'm sorry, all I am hearing is useless idealism in a political reality. Just get some tissues, wait a week, and I am sure it will be all over.

1. I don't even understand what you are trying to get at.
2. Political freedom my friend, some of the greatest reforms of America were responses to the American Socialist party ran by Eugene Debs who was imprisoned for no reason.

I support no one who goes to war against anyone elses ideology, war is the excuse politicians pull out of there ass when they failed there constituents and/or have no better solution.

The whole red scare was a political movement aimed at keeping Americans in the dark at the real issue at hand, a fight for natural resources. In the end America won, but does that justify the situation. What are the wars now?

A fight for natural resources.
4. It's an infomercial with comedy in it, the comedy takes back stage to whatever the network is trying to push onto people. Whether it is the hot new tv show, or the hot new movie, it is geared towards selling a certain goods while keeping you moderately entertained.

Not the kind of show the president should be on.
5. Get over yourself for a second, not everything in the world should be a commodity. The presidents image shouldn't be the hot new commodity that people rave about.
6. Sporting events are different than infomercials geared at selling you the hot new item, and that is what Late Night comedy shows are. Over glorified infomercial segments with comedy as an add-on. Appearances in public are fine, even on news programs and the like. Leno is a show geared towards selling pop culture, Obama by god better not become a pop culture icon tell he proves his worth.

It's like your giving the prince the throne to the castle before he becomes king.

You ignored all of Hatuey's sources so I'm not even going to try to prove to you that he had it while in office, however you'd have to actually not read my posts to realize that I've now established that I believe WOODROW WILSON had the condition IN OFFICE as well.

You have established NOTHING. Nice try though.

Good lord. I bring up two presidents, two top men of their game, and why they were concerned with image, you go on a rant about Vietnam (why, I don't know), I tell you why it was difficult to escape getting into a conflict in that region, then you say you don't care, then I explain further, then you have absolutely no idea what I am talking about (go figure), and you randomly bring up Eugene Debbs and continue ranting (and I stopped reading shortly thereafter).
I regret going into any examples of history, because you clearly have no conception of how to use it for debate and cannot keep focus.

"It's an infomercial with comedy in it, the comedy takes back stage to whatever the network is trying to push onto people. Whether it is the hot new tv show, or the hot new movie, it is geared towards selling a certain goods while keeping you moderately entertained."

And the venue has been used by politicians for a very long time now, and it is generally accepted? Only now because Obama has been considered a media darling (no doubt he is, much to my regret), has there even been the slightest of controversy. Look at how the venue has been used, suck it in, and accept reality.

"Get over yourself for a second, not everything in the world should be a commodity. The presidents image shouldn't be the hot new commodity that people rave about."

That's part of politics in the modern age. How much clearer does it need to be shown to you for you to understand that? That's not me being an egotist (how does that work, again? I don't even like Jay Leno), that's politics.

"Sporting events are different than infomercials geared at selling you the hot new item, and that is what Late Night comedy shows are. Over glorified infomercial segments with comedy as an add-on. It's still degenerating the worth of the office, right? I mean, the President of the United States throwing a baseball, when he is not a baseball player, and he's doing it for the goofy photo opportunity. It's still the same song and dance for you, except it doesn't have that icky consumerism behind it.

If the president going on a comedy routine that is meant to promote the hot new commodity is Modern Age Politics, then I might have to say the American people have failed.

Obama going on Leno would be the same to me as him going on the Shamwow guys show. He is a large cultural icon, that sole intent is to entertain you so you buy into the crap he is pushing, same **** as Leno.

Both Leno and this guy have the same damn message, are popular pop culture references and offer an entertaining way to promote new products.

Should the president go on television and talk to the Shamwow guy about his free throw shot or how AIG is such a **** up?

Of course not, and this is why going on Leno is such a terrible thing and why it shouldn't be perpetuated as ok or modern idea.

Plus I'm sure she was sought out by many for her comment within minutes of Obama's remark (the media still thinks the presidential race was Obama vs Palin).

You're statement is almost 100% correct. I'm sure Gov Palin always cared (hence not blinking when told her baby was going to be born with Down's). But it's a deeper, more personal kind of caring when it's your child.

In her address to the RNC upon accepting the nomination for VP candidate, Gov Palin specifically addressed parents of SN children saying they would have an avocate in Washington. In that moment, she became a leader in many eyes.

I dunno, I always got the impression she was beating us over the head about her mentally retarded kid, like we should vote for her over that.

The American people have failed? Shamwow? Such dramatics  Is this really what bothers you so much? The degree of distaste you have of this is disproportionate to its required criticism.

It's more so similar to Obama appearing on a radio morning show that does comedy while hosting guests, which politicians have done for ages as well. I, for one, am perfectly accepting of a high stature politician appearing on The Daily Show or the Colbert Report. I think they are of higher quality writing than Leno's staff, but it's nearly the same idea, isn't it? Are you that out of touch or that cranky that you can't relax for a few minutes?

It's easier to b.s. your way through a Leno interview. If we as the people accept this as a proper format for policy discussions we've embraced wholesale propaganda in favor of intellectual exchange. He didn't level" with the American people, he lied to them. He did so easily too as Leno isn't about to give him a hard time or question him in any substantive way.

Oh, and when John King interviewed Dick Cheney, he gave him a hard time and questioned him in a substantive way? Answer honestly because based on my watching the interview, the answer is no, he did neither.

It would be one thing if Obama were limiting his interviews to Jay Leno, David Letterman, etc. But he's not.

I don't recall your criticizing Bush while he stayed at his Crawford ranch while Louisana drowned, or went on vacation more than any other president, while putting troops in harm's way.

During the campaign, I thought I might have counted 3-4 times that were big. Comparatively, it was small in proportion, but much larger than one would be used to normally. Again, I thought it was interesting, considering that disability rights aren't really of concern to the American populous.

It wasn't disability rights. Choosing to deliver and keep a child with Down's Syndrome is essentially the strongest pro-life statement an American politician can make.

You hit the nail on the head, I would be fine with them going on Colbert's or daily show also. Those shows are made by there networks to promote things, to be sellouts for the network. You will never see Colbert whore himself out for MTV, Cartoon network or other comedy central shows, which own all those networks are owned by Viacom.

It's not the same, Leno and Letterman are whores to the networks, and run different shows than Colbert or Stewart. The only people you see come on Colbert's shows are yes actors who usually aren't promoting anything but most of the time are writers of very good books that need to be read.

On paper they look like the same animal, but comparing Letterman to Stewart or Leno to Colbert is like comparing a cat to a dog. The president will not go on any viacom programming because they do not have any shows on basic television. The people who own NBC and ABC have the monopoly over those channels.

I'm with you. PC has run amok. The movie PCU (a classic BTW) touched on how ridiculous all of it is and how much time we waste fighting for worthless causes when we should just thicken our skin a little bit.

The mistake Obama made was going on Leno in the first place. Had he not tried to score some points with the mindless neanderthals of this country (the main purpose behind going on the show) by going on Leno in the first place, this would be a non-issue as it wouldn't have happened. The timing and the format was uncalled for as the leader of the free world. It seems to me that if Obama worked half as hard looking Presidential as he does trying to score PR points with the brain dead in this country, half the threads on this board wouldn't exist.

Just two examples of what I'm talking about are the Leno appearance and his NCAA Tournament picks. WTF does this have to do with being the POTUS? That's right - absolutely nothing! He's not campaigning anymore, he won. He needs to stop with the theatrics and focus on the job at hand. The next Presidential election is more than 3 1/2 years away, save this bull**** for then, not now. We don't need this kind of crap at this point in our history, we need a leader. Despite my ideological differences, he needs to act like the person he is supposed to be. And for the record, I'd have a big problem with this no matter who it is in the WH, so don't think I'm just picking on Obama because that couldn't be any further from the truth.

Very good post. I agree with you - he can't be real - so he just tries to appeal to every common demoninator out there. I was s-o-o-o-o disappointed he didn't perform on jaywalk all stars! :lamo

Well said. And now he is going on prime time....again tonight:roll:.... to tell us he knows why we are upset about AIG but in the bigger scheme of things we do not really need to let it concern us.:spin: Pure bull**** and classic CYA!

It wasn't disability rights. Choosing to deliver and keep a child with Down's Syndrome is essentially the strongest pro-life statement an American politician can make.

Either way, it still seemed, to me, that she used it as a cudgel to beat people over the head with (figuratively speaking, of course. It'd be horrible and hilarious if she really did that.)

WTF? Mentally retarded kid? WTF?

Stop being so politically correct.

Retarded –adjective 1. characterized by retardation: a retarded child.

Retard -verb 1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.

So all I said is that her baby's mental state develops more slowly and with more impediments than a normal person. Are you disagreeing with me? Are you saying that Trig, with Down Syndrome, will develop mentally at the same rate as a normal child? Or did I just offend you on some deep level for using a medical term that's been established for decades, instead of using the touchy-feely "special needs" BS instead? And I thought liberals were the ones who were overly worried about everything being PC. It's not like I used it as an insult, as "anyone who gives their kids names like Track, Trig, and Tripp is a retard". It was in a consistant, medically exact, way. Grow up.

Please. Leno is excited to make history having on a sitting President. Beyond that what does Leno care? His reputation isn't in politics. Obama went for the easy appearance and that was apparent to anyone with a half a brain in their head. Jon Stewart on the Comedy channel would have been a harder hitting interview. The Leno interview was insulting. A slap in the face to folks who actually care about the answer to, "Just what in the hell are they thinking?" Obama appealed to tards and in tard like fashion the only thing they picked up on was the tard joke.

I find it insulting that some folks have a problem with Obama being on Leno. Hello latenight tv is part of our culture.

Appearing on Leno is keeping it real? 'bout real as the whole "I'm stunned, positively stunned," bit. " Appearing on Leno during a financial crisis is about a half step above appearing on the Tyra Banks show. It's an embarrassment. I don't currently give a crap about the dudes bowling scores, his basketball, etc. I want to know why he's feigning indignation on AIG and why he thinks it's wise to allow the fed to take such a historical gamble in our current situation. I want to know why he's comfortable and not afraid of inflation given the high risk of the feds action. I could give a crap about his bowling score and some retard jokes. The whole retard thing was a pun. Get it?

Yes it is keeping it real. He is showing that he is keeping in touch with the people and was trying to have some fun. Something that did backfire a bit for him but non the less he is a laid back Prez who seems to enjoy his job! What the hell is wrong with having a POTUS that enjoys having fun?

Hell Bill Clinton went on late night TV shows several times! Even played his sax on a few of em. Guess you had a problem with that too?

If you are watching Leno to get serious answers to serious questions? Well you have a real problem because that is not the time nor place for that kind of thing.

He was making fun of himself and I enjoy a person that can laugh at themselves-try it sometime. :2razz:

1. I'd prefer he went away for months at a time.
2. What he is doing is certainly not "touching".
3. He is "prodding" in areas he has no business and using the biggest weapon known to mankind. The full force of the United States Government.
4. Being a free person I want him and his teleprompter out of my life. Go touch someone else... and be sure to rubber up when you do.
You and your Obamatrons have ****ed way too much with this country already.

We're sore and sick from all the prodding.

.

Sounds like some bitter sour grapes to me:mrgreen:

Is it? The media penetration and hip-factor alone give him a boost for being able to 'level' with the American people and explain his position. Most people are not for debate (or whatever suffices for debate these days) or 60 minutes interviews.

Sometimes the controlled lowbrow approach is what does the trick. What did not work was the gaffe. Otherwise, it was an acceptable approach.

Very true! The majority of this country are not news junkies like a lot of us on this forum and during this difficult time people wish for a release and some laughs so going on Leno was a way to reach out to folks that wish to kick back, watch some tv, have some laughs and just chill.

Too bad he had to make the SO comment but he did the right thing and said he was sorry.
