US high school 'held cage fights'

Students have to consent to the match.

No more or at least a reduction of 4 guys against 1 gang banging.

More incentive for guys to get into shape.

Chance for the unknown and even possibly nerdy guys to get popular (or a date :rofl )

Adult supervision during the fight including a safety ref.

The only thing I can see wrong with this is abuse of a "fight club" looking to pick fights and have it sponsored by the school. Granted though, most principals are pretty well tuned into this kind of thing. Well, there's the parental consent stuff too but then you don't need parental consent if you're going to get your ass beat afterschool in the parking lot do you?

"Mom, Billy says he wants to kick my but. If you sign this form we'll fight in the gym, with gear and supervision. If you don't, Billy says he and his friends will find me while I'm walking home and drag me behind a gas station. Your call."

25 years ago we used to go just off campus to a grass triangle in an intersection. Bell rang, the two involved showed up, and the rest of the school surrounded the triangle preventing teachers from getting in, as long as possible. They had not authority there, but as adults they did put an end tothe fight if somebody had not already won.

Best fight ever there was a girl fight. but it wasnt a cat fight. One of the girls really knew how to fight. She struck the pose, raised her fists and when the other girl charged with arms flailing she just gave her the hook from hell. Knocked her ass right out
Better than any cat fight i ever saw before or since

All great reasons

Anythings better than the way kids settle fights today, cowards bringing weapons, 4:1's like you mentioned.

Women are absolutely brutal in a fistfight.

When I was kiddo in Texas you could put the gloves on and abide by the rules of boxing. Or you could just take it off campus if you wanted bare knuckled.

One day I took on the nose guard for the football team bare knuckled....big mistake for me and my bloody nose.

Every girl I have ever been in a fist fight with the girl has won And it only took one punch.;)

Saw the video. Kids were wearing headgear and gloves, the floor was padded, and they had responsible adult supervision-- including breaking clinches and preventing groundfighting. As far as I am concerned, the only thing the school did wrong was failing to secure parental permission for the bouts. That, and it probably would have been better to use an open space instead of a cage.

This is still a damn sight better for the students than having them expelled and arrested.

Still, it makes me wonder what the principal was thinking in the current legal and cultural climate.

I'm glad some other folks are coming in this thread and asking if this is really such a terrible thing. Two kids want to go at each other, I'd much rather have them do it with safety equipment and responsible adult supervision than out in the field behind the school like we used to do when I was a kid.

Though I also agree that in our modern legal an cultural climate, you have to wonder what were they thinking.

uhhh..............

I don't reckon this thread is ready to go to the Basement yet. There's still some valid on-topic discussion to be had.

I remember a chick fight about 6-7 years ago that looked more like a pro-wrestling match, one of the girls pretty much power bombed the other one in the middle of the street, needless to say I wasn't breaking it up.

Probably the best thing. When girls get angry they go below the belt, as to speak.

Mother is an assistant principal at a less than ideal school here in Texas. I was there in once (job related) when a fight broke out between two girls. The looked like giant vibrating dust bunnies with the hair flying around. I think if they had to wear gloves it would take away some of the awesomeness of the event. But to be honest it would be alot safer than some of the scratching that happens.

Do I have to take some people into the ring here to get some "thanks"? Bunch o' thankless newbies around I tell ya. :beat

I think the school is missing out on additional and valuable educational opportunities.
They could bundle this a whole lot better.

There should be scorekeepers and someone booking bets.
There should be an entrance fee of a quarter.
The kids could learn something about odds, bets, and why it's best to be the bookie and promoter.

Lesson 1: There aren't bad bets, only bad odds. You do not have to take bad bets.
Lesson 2: Not all sure bets pan out.
Lesson 3: If you pick the easy wins, you might not make money on huge odds, but it will accumulate over the long haul.
Lesson 4: Long shots are called long shots for a reason. They rarely pay off.
Lesson 5: If the game seems rigged (dishonest judges), don't play.

This Euro could do with a few rounds worth of fighting lessons from that high school.

I haven't seen a pack of Lucky Strikes since the early 90's. I do not believe they are still being manufactured.

Still available in the EU.

few things.

1. Rangers suck

2. this is not a "cage match" it is boxing and I see nothing wrong with it.

3. More schools should do this.

4. Rangers suck

Anybody who has raised a boy to adolesence (me, for one), and didn't willfully emasculate him with all this modern PC crap, KNOWS that boys (especially in middle school) have a natural degree of aggression that needs an outlet.

Sports is a big outlet for many. Some anthropologists have compared football, the other football (rugby/soccer/whatever), and so on as a psychological substitute for tribal warfare.

However, boys that age also tend to get into personal disputes. With all those hormones raging, and the built-in competitiveness and desire to be seen as tough guy, there needs to be an outlet for that as well.

IMHO, you can do one of two things:
1. Like most schools today, you can ignore these truths, pretend that all violence is always evil, pretend there is no difference between boys and girls, and try to force boys to act like pansies. The end result of this is stuff gets settled in some un-controlled manner; given the gangsta-wannabe thuggism prevalent today, somebody gets a gang-beatdown or stabbed or shot in many cases.
2. You can provide an outlet for this anger and aggression, in a controlled and overseen manner, as this Texas school did.

Girls fight sometimes too, and ought to have access to this outlet when they ask for it; but for the most part girls fight in more subtle ways using social pressures and interactions as their weapons.

A friend of mine who trains cops in HTH has been lamenting the fact that many of his new recruits grew up having never been in a single scuffle in their adolesence. Their lack of confidence in themselves is devastating to their ability to learn what they need to learn to do the job, and tends to result in either timidity or in overcompensation (over-aggression). To be a man, a boy needs to have tested himself in this manner so that he has confidence that he can handle himself if the need arises in adulthood.

my two bits...
