A 'Battlestar Galactica' panel discussion at the United Nations

Over the course of its four seasons, "Battlestar Galactica" has been lauded for its nuanced portrayal of war, faith and morality. Since it debuted six years ago, the Sci Fi drama about a rag-tag space fleet has offered challenging fictional depictions of problems afflicting our planet in the here and now.

And now a discussion of how those very issues have been handled on the show will take place at the United Nations.

On March 17, there will be a "Battlestar" retrospective at the U.N. in New York and a panel discussion of how the show examined issues such as "human rights, children and armed conflict, terrorism, human rights and reconciliation and dialogue among civilizations and faith," according to Sci Fi.

As if we needed something else to convince that the UN is a farce.

Obviously neither of you have watched BSG. It's the world's #1 sci-fi show for a reason... it deals with relevant global issues. I have friends at several universities in North America, and all of them have professors writing papers about the show right now, one of them for their doctorate. My professor in Vancouver wrote a book about the social policy in the show.

It's an incredibly rich epic and it makes sense that the way the issues are related in the show would make it into a governmental pannel. Seriously, watch the show.

One of the many reasons I detest the bastardized BSG they proffed on us... is proven out by the fact the UN is discussing how the show deals with things... this is all the proof I need BSG got intellectually raped.

The modern remake is a million times better than the original, on so many levels. :)

How is that obvious?

Yes it is.
How does that make it worthy of the UNs attention?

Seems to me that the UN should have more insight into the issues presented here than the writers of the show.

Because if you had seen it, it wouldn't be such a stretch of the imagination.

This has already been addressed.

Where in the article did it say that the show is informing the UN? It is simply a discussion pannel and a means of dialogue over world issues.

You lack a deeper understanding of the issue here. I've watched every single BSG episode.

Poorly.

And the point here is that the UN should not need to include BSG in a disuccsion about the issues presented.

Perhaps, in an effort to address world hunger, they'll now talk to Rachel Ray?

And so, any questions as to the absolutely silly nature of the UN should now be put to rest.

Whatever, they put Starbuck in a skirt, ruined the premise of the show, and made it a lamer space opera with political overtones. The politics of the show appeals to the UN... that's enough to keep me away.

Boomer TOS > Boomer remade
Cylons TOS > Cylons remade
Starbuck TOS > Starbuck remade
Adama TOS = Adama remade
Galactica TOS >>>> Galactica remade.... seriously.
TOS Sound Track >>>> Remake

And here come the ad homs.

I don't lack understanding, I just don't hate the UN like you do, so I'm not taking this with such dire seriousness.

My impression is that it's a friendly discussion between the show's staff, cast, and UN reps. Who are you to decide what people "need not" do? It's not meant to be about informing the UN on doing their jobs. I am curious though how the whole thing got setup... maybe the big t.v networks pulled some strings via money.

It's just a discussion, get over yourself.

Boomer in the current series is FAR hotter than Boomer in TOS.

Moderated by Whoopi Goldberg. :rofl

It is a really good show and the UN has always been a running joke so I don't see the issue.

Did you know the actor that portrayed Boomer in TOS got an award for positive portrayal a black man (I think that was the award not feeling well) for his work?

And cylons are the remnants of a lizard race.. not mans mistake "come back to haunt him".... one can only hope this discussion group comes back to haunt the UN for it's stupidity.

I cannot believe that anyone could possibly take the UN seriously after this.

Its no different than bringing in the writers, producers and actors from Twister to discuss "global climate change."

I watched on episode.

Once.

It sucked big time.

So a major global issue we need to contend with is the cloning and reprogramming of humans by Frankenstein-monster robots?

Has BSG (stands for Bull**** Galore, right?) ever discussed the problems of over-large national governments? How about gun-grabbing national governments? It ever discussing the crushing burden of taxation by national governments? What about the destruction of individual liberties by national governments pursuing socialist agendas?

No? It's never covered those things? Then BSG doesn't cover the truly important problems in the world today. It's fantasy.

Like I said, the show sucks.

The showed sucked in the 70's.

Read Saberhagen's Berserker stories, if you want to read something realistic. Start with Berserker: Blue Death.

WTF? I've never seen Starbuck in a skirt... ?

But now.... Tricia Helfer.... she makes the show worth watching all by herself. Holy **** is she hot. Regardless, the show rocks. I'm a recently made fan though as I've only started watching the 3rd season episodes now.

Anywho... who cares what the UN is doing anyway? Is what they do relevent to... well... anything?

The sci fi channel approached the UN and asked if they could do it. Apparently 100 high school students will attend to partake in the discussion and it is part of the Creative Community Outreach Program. The UN also allowed Law and Order to film an episode of their show at the UN.

Amidst all this silliness this is rather scary though:

establish partnerships with the entertainment industry to tell the U.N.’s story,” said Juan Carlos Brandt, a spokesman.

Starbuck shouldn't have ever been made into a split tail... seriously.

The UN is doing what it always does, wastes money and gets easily duped people into liking it.

I really don't see the problem with this. Yea, it's a little bit dorky, but the average person who participates in Model UN is dorky too, so why is it a surprise that whatever school is hosting this conference decided to play to that crowd.

I mean, the article was obviously talking about a Model UN conference, right?

Hey, I was in the Model UN! :3oops:

As was I, sister. ;)

We didn't have it in my school. I was in Mock Trial instead (Lead Prosecution)... and Drama Club (Lead, quite a few times)... and Math Club (Vice President), and Muslim Student Association (Treasurer)... yeah, I was a nerd. I made up for it by chronically not doing my homework. It's a miracle that I ever passed. To add to my nerdiness, I was on Speech and Debate after going to college....

Look at it this way: as long as they're spending time talking about BSG, they aren't doing any harm, as they would be if they were passing moronic resolutions instead.

Maybe if we could keep the US Congress harmlessly occupied talking about BSG for a few months, we might be able to pull out of this recession.

I had to look up what 'split tail' meant - a euphemism I apparently am unfamiliar with - but if you're implying that Starbuck was male in the original series, then I don't really care about that. Didn't watch the original, don't have any plans to, don't care about it. But the Starbuck in the current series is hot, and never wears a skirt. ;) Was the original Starbuck hot? If not, then the current owns > the old one.
