`Fight club' bouts probed at home for the retarded

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - Seven employees at a state-run home for the mentally disabled have been suspended for allegedly staging a "fight club" among residents.

Corpus Christi Police Captain Tim Wilson says the fight clubs were uncovered when someone gave an off-duty police officer a cell phone containing videos of fights at the Corpus Christi State School. Wilson says the videos show mentally disabled adult clients punching, shoving, and striking each other while the employees watch.

another example of Humanity at its finest, although i must admit i did chuckle when i read the headline

How did the title get changed from ' `Fight club' bouts probed at home for

the retarded' to the first line that states 'Seven employees at a state-run

home for the mentally disabled'

The negative connotations associated with the word retard are right up there

with many other derogatory names. I don't have any mentally disabled in

my family and find that word to be more offensive than most racial remarks.

Just another example of ignorance I suppose.

A word itself isn't inherently derogatory. The context in which it is used is the determining factor.

Retarded is not a slur when it is applied to the retarded.

Just as "ignorance" doesn't mean "stupid", but has gained that connotation by continued misuse.

These terms are not correctly applied as slurs, but as descriptions. Everyone is ignorant. It is a legitimate description of people who lack knowledge. Since nobody is all-knowing, everyone has a degree of ignorance.

The word "retarded" is an accurate description of those who have limited mental abilitities.

"Mentally Disabled" on the other hand, is an inaccurate term describing mental handicaps. The prefix "dis-" means an absence. Thus "Disabled" means "an absence of ability". In this context, it would mean that there is an absence of mental ability.

That is not the case with the retarded. They have mental abilities, it is just that these mental abilities are... limited, or retarded, if you will.

So in essence, the MORE offensive term would be claiming that those who have limited ability actually have no ability at all.

;)

Do you think being retarded is a negative thing or a positive thing ??

I think retarded is a negative, so it doesn't need any "connotations".

The word is just fine, its not mean, its just accurate. The individuals in question had thier mental development retarded by injury or disease/disorder. The word is accurate, and there is no reason not to use just because some childish ninny doesn't want to be reminded that bad, is bad.

Life is hard,
When you're a 'tard,
covered in drool,
and eight pounds of stool,
You can't count to ten,
and look like Sean Penn,
'cause life's so hard,
When you're a 'tard.

FYI: 'retarded' is an acceptable adjective with clinical use, but the noun 'retard' is is and has never been anything but a pejorative AFAIK.

Yeah, I've never really been too put off by perjoratives so, meh, whatever.

I wasn't born a nigger. They were born retarded. Any questions?

I’m not particularly sensitive to the use of the word retard by any means, as it has become almost an accepted terminology in recent years. It was just funny how the headline transitioned.

Non-the-less it is viewed as derogatory term by the main-steam. I think it was Dick Morris who was on the O’Reilly factor not too long ago and he said ‘retarded’ and O’Reilly got insane amounts of negative feedback demanding an apology.

Although given the ridiculous amount of political correctness these days and people walking on egg shells as to not offend anyone, that is to be expected.

Much like the word ‘fag’ or ‘gay’. Growing up, anyone you wanted to playfully make fun of was a fag, or something you didn’t like was gay There was no baggage attached to it, and we certainly weren't thinking “That is homosexual.” Now call someone a fag in public and you’ll either get called out or at least some dirty looks, especially in California.

A funny sight is to watch a white person trying to describe a group of ’African Americans’ to another group of African Americans. If said person was speaking with his friends he would have no problem saying ’So this black dude…blah blah’ But when speaking to a group of blacks they become very uncomfortable as how to tell the story.

Retard hasn't become accepted terminology. It's has been accepted terminology for quite some time. Only that in the right context it can be offensive. Example. Homosexual isn't offensive to anybody. But if I call you a homo. You'll be offended. If I say Jallman is a homosexual. It's no longer offensive because he is in fact a homosexual. This article is talking about people who are CLINICALLY RETARDED, 'retards'. It's not going out of it's way to be offensive to people who are not in fact retarded but reporting on real retards who were forced to fight.

some retards have the best of lives, because they do not know any better
some always have that **** eating grin on their face
I am jealous of those retards

I thought the movie Fight Club was retarded.....

...so its all kind of come full circle for me.

The adjective has clinical use, but I'm curious why you're assuming that 'retard' is acceptable and by whom you think it is.

There is often process where the descriptors of conditions slowly become less acceptable due to the inherent way that society views those conditions.

This has happened with 'retarded' but AFAIK 'retard' was and has always been pejorative. Doctors might describe someone as mentally retarded, but I don't think there was ever a clinical context to call them a retard.

It's not a huge concern to me if people use the word, but they should know the context.

Did you know that FLK is a recognized term in medicine?

It's a term that means "Funny looking kid".

It is used when the kid has certain characteristics that could mean another problem that has physical features that correspond with it, such as Down's Syndrome or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

I've seen it on a medical chart before.
