Chinese Navy surround and harrass US Navy Ship Impeccable

I think you guys are thinking to into this military naval stuff, have you guys not remembered we liberated China from Japan?

Seriously, I doubt they would forget that quickly how we saved there behinds, if you don't know what happen here is a short comic explaining.

America was fighting proxy wars in China before WWII, by giving the KMT tanks and other foreign technology to fight the rise of Communism. Fueling that war contributed to the deaths of millions. Furthermore, the U.S. was part of the imperial ransacking of China pre-WWI, along with the unequal treaty system (see: Treaty of Wangxia).

Furthermore, it is an exaggeration to say that the U.S. was trying to save China. It was simply trying to end the Pacfic conquest of Japan that threatened its shores. Japan's forces being weakened and therefore pulling out of China as a result was just a benficial byproduct of Japan's multi-front war.

Absolutely, a simple change in U.S. trade law banning Chinese goods from any reason ranging from safety(great case could be made there) to "we just felt like it" could crush the budding Chinese manufacturing economy.

Where else are you going to purchase the "cheap tacky" goods for your Disney parks?

Paul

If your going to play like that you could say on the European front that USA and USSR did not save Frqnce from Germany.

As. for those proxy wars, I always thought those were just rumors, a source for you claims would be nice.

Unlike with France, the U.S. never touched Chinese soil, so to claim that the U.S. was directly trying to save China is false. It's war was with Japan and by default this took pressure off of China.

Any book on modern Chinese history will furnish you with the common details of how the U.S. invested in the KMT in order to assure that China became a democratic power. They did so with money and technology. It was also during this period that China's capital was moved to Nanjing, where the Japanese later invaded. (Also known as the Rape of Nanjing).

There was a LOT of direct US support for China, before and during the war. Many a US pilot los his life flying supplies over the Hump, and the first B29 raids came from bases in China.

Theoretically, yes. The problem is distinguishing between what support was meant to fight the internal civil war against the Communist forces, and what support was being allocated to anti-Japanese activities. During the KMT era and prior to WWII, the U.S. was mainly interested in China for the sake of fighting Communism. It wasn't until WWII that the cause became two-fold.

I still disagree that the U.S. fought Japan to save China. The U.S. was never at war with Japan until 1939, but the Japanese were already invading China through small conflicts in 1931, taking territory one piece at a time. It was even at full scale war with China in 1937 (the Second Sino-Japanese War). In 1937, Shanghai was burning. Where was the U.S.? Nowhere to be found.

If the U.S. really wanted to "save" China it would have done something much earlier on about the situation.

This will go down as the Battle of the South China Sea, circa 2009. The battle went as follows:

1) Chinese ships harass American ship.

2) American ship uses firehoses to spray Chinese ships.

3) Chinese crews retaliate by stripping down to their underwear.

NO!! This is not a joke. It really happened. :rofl

Chaing sure had a lot of US-supplied militatry hardware...

1941. The US fought the japanese to save herself. The US supported her allies -- the UK, the Aussies, NZ, China -- so that they too might save themselves.

The US was directly involved in helping Chona fight the Japanese before Pearl Harbor, both militarily and through diplomacy - the US cut off Japanese oil and steel as a direct result of Japan's actions in China.

Ups seems the ship was an experimental sub hunter ship, operation in disputed waters..

Officials: US ship in China spat was hunting subs

Seems that China does have something to be pissed over.....

Seems like the Chinese are a bunch of whiny brats. That vessel was operating in international waters and therefore was legally clear to do whatever she was ordered to do by her commanders.

The Chinese had absolutely no legal authority to interfere. It could have been a aircraft carrier task force with a hundred nuclear weapons on board, and the Chinese would have been obligated to leave it alone.

I'm really impressed at the courageous actions of the chinese, ganging up on an unarmed vessel in the open ocean like that.

Those evil Americans! Seeking to help the Chinese people become a democratic republic where human rights are respected. How awful can they be?

No. The communists killed millions.

That's what communists do.

Name a book and I will read it.

I know there was a red scare, but if anything the Chinese have much bigger vandettas against other countries than America for this to have any steam.

And at the most, a Coast Guard cutter or Navy destroyer would have been assigned to monitor them at a prudent distance for as long they were in some area causing us concern. They can lurk outside our coastal waters for as long as they want without repurcussions.

That's why the Chinese had to falsely claim the vessel was in a special economic zone, just like they had to falsely claim our EP-3 was in Chinese airspace when it clearly was not before they attacked it.

Actually, by all accounts, it WAS in the EEZ. However, that only gives ECONOMIC rights, NOT Sovereign rights. There is still the right to international passage and use on the water and in the air.

The Treaty of Whampoa (France) gave the French the same equal treatment the British got at Nanjing IN ADDITION to the right to protect Catholics in China (which was later violated by China). Wanghia (Wangxia) did the same for the US. By the way, one of the provisions of that treaty was to lift a PROHIBITION on foreigners learning Chinese.

The U.S. actually placed sanctions on Japan after Japan started its war against China years before the US entered the war. Even as early as the WWI era, the U.S. lent diplomatic support vis a vis Japan. As for trying to save China after WWII - it was, of course, more about preventing the COmmunists taking over than actually "saving China."

It was in international waters. The Chinese have nothing to complain about - especially as they perform recon in the EEZs of other countries. Of course, your knee jerk position is to take the anti-US line even when there is absolutely NO justification for it.

Vietnam (which I am seeing more and more of lately)

Vietnam's productivity is a drop in the ocean compared to China. I was being somewhat facetitious though, there would be a host of countries cuing to be exploited by America, no fear of that:)

Chinese are turned on in strange ways.

I read an article yesterday where China is DEMANDING that the US stop its activities in the South China Sea. link

Hopefully President Obama has the sense to stick up for a position that the US has stood for for more than two centuries - and that is the right to use and navigate in international waters for ALL states.

Now, destroyers will accompany surveillance ships for now.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States has decided to provide heavily armed destroyers to escort US surveillance ships operating in the South China Sea after a tense naval standoff this week, a US official said on Thursday.

Good. Definately don't want to let the Chinese push the US around in international waters.
