RUSSIA BRUSHES OFF OBAMA: NO 'HAGGLING'
Tue Mar 03 2009 09:15:17 ET

Russian President Dmitri Medvedev on Tuesday showed willingness to discuss the US-planned missile defense system opposed by Moscow, but without 'haggling' linking it to Iran.

Medvedev was commenting during a visit to Spain on an alleged offer by US President Barack Obama to halt the defense system if Iran could be convinced to give up nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in Madrid, Medvedev welcomed the 'positive signals' coming from the Obama administration with which he hoped to reach 'agreements.'

'Haggling,' however, was not 'productive,' Medvedev said.

DRUDGE REPORT: RUSSIA BRUSHES OFF OBAMA: NO 'HAGGLING' 2009®

There is Obama-land, where everyone is reasonable and all you have to do is give the right incentive and everyone is happy.

Then there is the real world, where other leaders see Obama as weak, and dismiss him as such. Obama's weakness is on display for the world, and we're gonna pay for it.

This reminds me of the weak-kneed Chamberlin meeting with Hitler when he returned to England telling his nation there would be no war between Germany and Great Britain. Putin would eat Obanana up and spit him out like the skinny little twit that he is.

Are you comparing Chamberlin to Obama and Hitler to Putin? :doh

Obama will play nicely for a few more months, then I believe he will start the back-hand bidding at $20

How does a "secret letter" from our prez to mother Russia become public after only a few days?

So he's getting backhanded for free now and will start charging later? O rpay to get backhanded.

Obama couldn't stand up to the trade minister from southern Uganda, let alone handle the big league players. As is obvious from this big "test" of his. He got bitch slapped by Russia.

Because the Russians laughed so hard at it they thought it was a joke at first.

article said:
Citing US officials speaking on condition of anonymity, the Times reported that Obama sent a secret letter three weeks ago to Medvedev.

1) It was 27 days ago.
2) By "secret" now-a-days we typically have two definitions. Firstly, secret in the sense that it's purpose is to draw suspicion, to entice, or to promote interest. Secondly, secret as in you'll never see this because it either A) doesn't exist B) we made it up or C) we've currently deleted it from our inbox.
I think this was the first one. Transparency yay :3oops:

Why does everyone have to learn the hard way that Russians are super bad-ass negotiators?

He already got bitch slapped from Iran as well.

Welcome back Carter. :2wave:

This analogy is a HUGE stretch. Obama will be viewed as another weak kneed pushover like Carter was, but suggesting that this is of the same import as the Chamberlain-Hitler meetings is demeaning one of the most tragic and important moments in World history.

That event was the epitome of the failure of appeasement towards a dictator who for all intents and purposes clearly mapped out his agenda and was not taken seriously because the world was wallowing in denial.

I'm not so sure about that. Considering how fast Obama moved from personally placing chocolates on the pillows of every Republican to stating on live television, "I'm the president. Deal with it, bitch." makes me think he's a fast learner.

You misunderstood me.
He will be serving the back-hands. He's learning that not everything is as nice as his campaign wanted it to be. He will start smacking.

any concrete evidence of this? Or is this speculation?

Talk is cheap don't you think?

Speculation right now. But he is smart and he's still undergoing some what of a learning curve.

I keep reading these kinds of statements and am fascinated; what part of spending trillions of dollars on a speculative program to force the nation out of recession appears smart? What part of a dialogue suggesting that the previous administration was wrong and we are going to try terrorists in civil courts of law smart? What part of the dialogue suggesting that one can "discuss issues" with dictators and despots who are bent on destroying your way of life smart?

Watching this man in action only continues to reinforce my initial feelings; he is an intellectual midget.

This is the man who thinks there are 61 states!

Nevertheless, there's little doubt they've already got a Nobel Peace Prize with his name on it stored away in some closet... ready to be awarded in 2020 or 2030 when his hair is white as snow and he's jetting around the world undermining the foreign policy of a sitting Republican president.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

And your evidence is this what? Obama hasn't the balls to handle the real world. He won't be allowed a teleprompter in negotiations with real leaders, they'll just keep ignore his letters and keep laughing at him. He'll give campaign speeches and talk talk talk.

Remember Reagan? "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Do you think Obama has the ability to take such a stand? I don't.

well they probably know about as much about him as we did when we elected him. which is 0 and that he couldn't hold down his senate job for more than a few weeks before making a grab for the White House. What kind of credibility did anyone expect him to have with Russia when it comes to negotiations?

From the drudge report snippet:

This is showing that Russia brushed off Obama, or is this evidence that he brushed off the question asked from a reporter? I guess whether or not haggling was part of the letter is crucial information here.

The Kremlin also disputed talk of any trade-off in the letter. In Moscow, a Kremlin source told FOX News there was no quid pro quo on Iran and missile defense in the letter, but said the correspondence was considered very positive and contained a number of initiatives.

Obama: Letter to Moscow Addressed Missile Shield, Did Not Offer Trade-Off - First 100 Days of Presidency - Politics FOXNews.com

A bit of sensationalism for an attention grabbing headline using unsubstantiated evidence?? Or are the Kremlin and White House both lying over the contents of the letter??

We will never know for sure unless we see the letter I suppose, but I do not put much credibility in the Drudge piece, nor the initial NY Times piece based on 1 anonymous source either.

Either way, I do not construe any of Medved's comments from the Drudge link as "Brushing off Obama" that is solely the creation of whoever wrote the headline.

Well...Russia obviously gains the benefits anyway this thing turns out(already they have the President of the USA coming to them hat in hand and trying to bribe them to help him-winner for Russia). They are basically shopping Obama for a py of and he appears more then willing to give them one.

But they are going to take their pound of flesh as well..which may in the end protect all of us form the ignorance of Obama.

You don't give up a strategic military defense system that your foe has been bitching and threatening you over for an agreement to hold your hand in diplomatic negotiations with another threat.
Its just simplistic and idiotic at face value. Its what you expect to get from a far left college student...not a real world leader addressing factual existing circumstances.

This is the first major f up by Obama in foreign affairs and we'll be watching the Russians exploit him now that they they know for a fact how weak he is.

+1 Russia..with the possibility of turning it into a +100.

Speculation right now. But he is smart and he's still undergoing some what of a learning curve.

Why do so many think that Obama is so damned smart? The word is glib... like a used car salesman! He certainly is not retarded, but I've never seen evidence that he is quick witted. He certainly didn't shine when the teleprompter was taken away from him. I wonder how he would have fared in the campaign if the press would have pressed him as they did Hillary and all Republicans.

Even if it costs billions and doesn't work?

Care to say how they can exploit the US now?

+1 Russia..with the possibility of turning it into a +100.

+2 for a defense policy based more on diplomacy with major powers instead of technology that fails 90% of the time.

I don't understand this at all. There are exactly 10 interceptor missiles in Poland. It's there for no other reason to get cashed in as a bargaining chip for other things, notably help with Iran and easier supply lines to Afghanistan. Since Russia is helping to oversee the dry runs of Iran's nuclear power plant and in charge of changing their spent fuel rods, the only way to achieve anything with Iran, other than massive war, is with Russian help.

Seriously, all these conservatives make no sense to me.

Can we spend money on education IN America? Highway projects for our crappy infrastructure IN America? Healthcare for Americans?

Nonono That's pork spending oh my freaking god!!!!!

How about a defense system that rarely works, doesn't have a chance in hell of stopping the belligerents, sacrifices diplomacy with a major power and supplier of oil, costs billions, and, best of all, does nothing to defend the US?

YES!

:doh

We will never know; and to this day they continue to provide Obama cover. After all, they all went to great lengths to drag him across the finish line regardless of his extreme lack of experience and past associations.
