Man slays sister for honour

1. Honor killings are not sanctioned under Islam, it goes way before Islam was around.
2. As horrible as it sounds, this will always occur. Keep on making threads about it but it will not change reality.
3. Call me a bitch but this is 1 human being, how many are starving and dying in this world?

What do y'all think we should do about it?
It's not our business, we need to pull out of there and stop trying to force other nations to follow our ideology.

It's not just one human being. It's about 5000 every year and that's not counting the cases that never get reported.

The starving and dying problem is a separate issue. It does not in any way take away from the importance of calling attention to honor killings whether they're committed by Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs or Westerners [yes, people it does happen in the West too; the level of violence committed against women in Spain alone, by dumped boyfriends and husbands, has everything to do with their honor and pride as macho men being hurt].

Caring about one problem doesn't mean we forget all the other ones.

SgtRock, I have no problem you bringing the wrongs done in the name of Islam. That is to be commended. Much like those bring to light that child molesting priests aren't really part of Christianity.

The problem comes when people associate a religion with what is done wrongly in the name of religion.

I have no problem with saying that some really screwed up things are done in the name of Islam, but Islam is not the problem, much like Christianity wasn't the problem with backwards thinking people did things in the name of that religion.

The real problem is when people associate what is WRONGLY done in the name of a religion with the religion. It is that ignorance that breeds hate.

As far as I am concerned, please keep bringing to light what is done wrongly in the name of Islam.

If there can be peaceful Muslims like we have seen many in the U.S. that means that the religion is not to blame.

Yet you blast him for pointing out the obvious. Do a comprehensive search of all news articles that contain the word “honor-killing”. It doesn't take a genius to categorize the returned compendium vis-a-vis incident identifiers such as geographic location and event rationale.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was actually researching this question, and not avoiding.

The UN Population Fund is the only organization to do any kind of detailed tally on the number of honour killings worldwide, and the statistic is somewhere around 5000 per year. However, as of now, there are no reliable statistics which demonstrate where the highest numbers occur.

I would guess that, due to the current political climate, honour killings that take place in the Middle East are the most popularized in the West, but I do know (both from personal encounters with friends, literature I've read in the past, and just knowlege of the culture) that honour killings in Asia are also quite high (this includes India as well as East Asia). I also came across random abuse statistics, such as in the U.S. a woman is abused every 15 seconds... though I know that doesn't relate to honour killings, I still think it's worth mentioning in order to emphasize the amount of abuse women receive worldwide, even in the West.

While I know a lot of honour killings use Islam to justify actions, I don't agree that the true teachings of Islam permit this. What we are seeing in the Middle East, in terms of radical Islam, is what Christianity witnessed hundreds of years ago before the rise of the modern rational movement. In several countries the radical factions have more power than the moderates and modern Muslims, and for them honour killing is symbolic of Islam. Still, even in the West, there are Evangelicals who espouse radical ideas based on scripture.

If one is to address honour killings, one need look at cultural values. The Middle East has long since been a tribal region before it was ever nationalized, where women were used (and still are) as dowry and therefore the actions of women reflected the family's honour. In India this is still very much the case in a lot of places, and in East Asia as well. In any culture where women are married off to secure specific relations, goods, etc., the actions of the woman determine the future well-being on the family. I think that is worth looking at before we glare at Islam as a whole. When women are killed for turning their backs on Islam, it is not because Islam has taught the killers to do this per se, but because a woman rejecting her family's faith is a form of discrediting them in their communities.

In terms of campaigning against honour killings... it is only relevant to those who intend to use this knowledge locally. For instance, I can do nothing about honour killings in Jordan, but maybe I could campaign the Canadian government to keep a watchful eye on the situation, as honour killings have been brought to Canada as well. That said... how can the law protect women in advance of a crisis? Domestic abuse is still rampant everywhere, so is rape, child abuse, sexual harassment, etc etc.

It seems like feminism in the world has scarcely begun.

Thx, Sarge. BTW, the most ironic thing about this is that the rate of car accidents in Saudi Arabia is one of the highest in the world.

 great point lol
