I can only respond to Tom Ridge's statement by saying one simple sentence.

Thank you, Mr. Ridge, for stating that waterboarding IS torture that we should not be committing. I still disagree with renditions in general of people, many who have turned out to be innocent, but do agree that, in some cases rendition is necessary.

I will also say this - In the aftermath of the 911 attacks, we had to move quickly, and make mistakes in the process. From what Tom Ridge said, these mistakes have been ironed out. But torture of any kind is not a mistake. It is an act that we punished our enemies for doing, and we should never stoop to their level, lest we become like them.

Thank you again, Mr. Ridge, for stating the obvious. May we learn from the mistakes of our past, and never repeat them.

I guess it was not one simple sentence after all, but things are more complicated now.

I've read this article and others. And nowhere have I found the quote that now seems to be attributed to Mr. Ridge... "We were wrong to torture."

Mr. Ridge is quoted many times in the article. In some places he defends U.S. policy and in others he seems to suggest that criticism is justified in some instances.

But nowhere do I see Mr. Ridge say "We were wrong to torture."

Two things are certain. That phrase does make for a snappy headline. And will certainly lead to threads like this on every political message board in the county.

From the article:

America's first homeland security secretary has accepted some criticisms of the US "war on terror" made in a recent report by legal experts.
Tom Ridge told the BBC that the report's attacks on extended detention and torture were justified.

Mr Ridge, who was appointed to the new post of homeland security secretary after the 11 September, 2001 attacks on the US, said the ICJ was on "solid ground" in its commentary "with regard to torture and sustained detention without due process".

Reading is fundamental.
