UAE officials refused to grant a visa to Shahar Peer, who was seeking to compete in the Sony Ericsson World Tennis Association Tour's stop in Dubai, which began Sunday, CNN reported.

This is absolutely pathetic. She is ranked in the top-50 in the world. This is the kind of move countries like Venezuela made last year. And the UAE is supposed to be a model of a more open Islam.

The move means Dubai could lose its WTA membership next year, officials said.

It should. No country barring competitors from fairly competing should be allowed to host such tournaments.

And they US has banned people from entering the US... remember Cat Stevens? and in the US case it is a huge majority muslims...? The UK just banned "the" dutch politician from entering the UK because of his racist views.. Countries do it all the time. But in this case people are up in arms because it is a jew? Give me a break.

The UAE can ban anyone they want from entering their territory, just like anyone else.

I think people are up in arms over those guys too.

Just because countries do this doesn't mean it is right.

Shahar Peer is a world class tennis player who competes in every major WTA tournament.

If someone can be banned from WTA competition because they are Jewish what is next? Banning the Williams sisters because they are black? Banning Sania Mirza because she is Muslim? Banning Raphael Nadal because he is left-handed?

Jeesh. Some of the lame crap you come up with is simply unbelievable.

Maybe the UAE wants to win the tournament.

And so what. The WTA aint the UAE. The WTA knows that it has to follow the rules of the countries where it holds competitions. If it does not like those rules, then dont freaking hold the competitions there.

I dont like this any more than the next guy, but I refuse to be up in arms over it just because it happens to be an Israeli, when very few were up in arms over Cat Stevens being banned from the US, or the thousands of innocent people including 3 month old babies being banned from entering the US due to having the "wrong name". And where on these boards was the uproar over the UK kicking out the Dutch right wing politician the other day? No where as far as I can see. Countries do it all the time and it is their right regardless if we agree with it or not. And dont play all high and mighty, because even Israel has banned people from entering Israel and keep doing it... where is your "uproar" over that?

You are dismissing one wrong by pointing out other wrongs.

According to your logic, every wrong can be minimized simply because there is nothing new under the sun.

A fairly pathetic and shallow worldview.

Why is it that no wrong in the world can go without being turned into a criticism of the United States? At least with some frequent posters, anyway.

It's an obsession with some.

Pete, people were up in arms about Cat Stevens.

People were up in arms about babies not being allowed into the country.

Sorry, I hadn't heard about the Dutch racist.

I think she was denied entry because she is Israeli, not because she is Jewish. You are aware that there is a difference between the two, correct?

No I aint dismissing one wrong with another wrong. You are claiming that his is some kind of unheard off event and of course it being the UAE, a muslim country, and the person in question being an Israeli, then you suddenly blow it up as something it is not. Not to mention you are being hypocritical.

On one hand, we have the sovereignty of nations to do as they please when it comes to letting people into their country on what ever reason they see fit.

On the other hand we have the very real sense of justice that no one should be barred from any place purely based on race, sex, religion and what not. But newsflash, in the real world that happens all the time.

Lets look at the ways countries bar people. The US has the no fly list, which is highly based on one religion.. Islam. It also bars people with HIV. Europe bars often people with criminal records from entering Europe. Israel does not allow everyone that wants to goto Israel in.

Like it or not, barring this tennis player based on that she is Israeli, is no different than the US barring HIV positive people from entering or Norway saying no to Snoop Dog or Israel denying muslims to return to the west bank after marrying someone from Syria. They have their reasons so be it and accept it, we do not live in a world where freedom of movement is universal for everyone regardless of sex, race, religion or a number of other criteria.

Does Ms. Peer formulate and enact Israeli policy?

Should either religion or nationality be a qualifier in athletic competition?

Isn't the world of sports supposed to be a neutral arena?

wtf

Should either religion or nationality be a qualifier in athletic competition?

Of course not, and I wasn't addressing this. I was merely addressing your attempt to make this out as a case of anti-semitism.

Exactly, this whole thing reaks of an attempt to make the issue about her "nationhood or religion", in this case Israel and being a jew (most likely) and totally ignoring the fact that countries bar people for all sort of reasons, valid and not, on a daily basis.. INCLUDING the state of Israel. Why suddenly the uproar about this tennis player (who btw, is the double partner of the best Danish female tennis player), and not about when Israel, the UK, France, Germany, Japan, China, US, Canada and so on, deny access to their territory because of they feel like it?

Well, a reason hasn't been given yet, and based on the recent conflicts it a reasonable guess to say that she was denied entry because she's Israeli. Of course, it's important to keep in mind that it's a guess, and not necessarily the truth. So Tashah's statements stand (aside from the jew reference), provided that she qualify them with "If it is because she is Israeli..."

Perhaps you can't read?

I can read perfectly well; he basically said the same thing that I said.

Well then.

Don't imply that I interjected religion into this thread.

I didn't. PeteUK did that. Scroll up.

It's not my fault he birthed a Freudian slip.

All I stated, is that she is most likely a Jew, because she is from Israel. And you did interject religion into the thread by posting this at all. You posted it because an Israeli was banned from the UAE and alone there you have already interjected religion into the subject, because the whole freaking conflict is based on religion. So dont try hiding behind some PC "I did not say anything about religion" when anyone can see that your whole surmise was to point out that yet again was an Israeli some how "wronged" by an Arab nation and no matter how you spin it, it is jew against muslim yet again.

But enough of this bs thread.

The only bs here is from you Pete.

Let's look at it again in chronological order shall we?

Let's see. You mentioned muslims, racist, and jew. You interjected three things right there in Post #2.

Didn't you know its only peace loving and fair when it benefits them?
They just didn't want to get their arse kicked for the world to see by an evil Jewish tennis pro........

What a bunch of cowards...

When has an Israeli athlete ever played in Dubai? Dubai and Israel have never had diplomatic ties and this isn't the first time they've denied someone a visa.

The Jewish tennis pro would get spanked by the genetic freak Williams sisters, or one of those equally genetically unique Russians. :2razz:

Genetically unique Russians? Please provide nude pictures of these Russian women so that I may judge their tennis assets.

She's not a tennis pro but damn!

Okay then tell me this.... why have you and others not been up in arms over the following.

Israel denies entry to high-profile critic Norman Finkelstein - Haaretz - Israel News

Starhawk: Denied Entry Into Israel - On Faith at washingtonpost.com

US professor Richard Falk deported from Israel over Holocaust comments | World news | guardian.co.uk

Instances where Israel has done exactly the same thing.

And where was the outrage when this happened?

Extremist Israeli politician banned from Britain - Telegraph
Moshe Feiglin, leader of the hardline-theological Jewish Leadership faction within Likud, received a letter from the UK's Home Office in December warning him he would not be permitted to enter the country

Or when this happened just the other day

Dutch politician banned from UK over anti-Islam views | Metro.co.uk

Why is it, that you only go up in arms when it happens to an Israeli going to a Muslim country, (that is in an active boycott of Israel btw) and not when Israel does it to others or when Israelis are banned from non Muslim countries?

You can spin it as much as you want, but you started this thread, well knowing one party was an Isreali and hence most likely a Jew, and the other party was an Arab nation, most likely a Muslim nation. It was just another Israel vs the Arab world bs crap, and you can not deny that the whole conflict has very religious tones too it... hello... the wailing wall and Al Aqsaq mosque?
