BEAVER DAM (WKOW) -- A Beaver Dam teacher who posted a prominent photograph of herself with a gun on Facebook has not been allowed to return to her school and remains on administrative leave.

"We are collecting more information," Beaver schools superintendent Donald Childs told 27 News. When asked when teacher Betsy Ramsdale would return to her duties at Beaver Dam Middle School, Childs said he could not provide that information. "Not yet."

...In a statement, Christopher Ahmuty of the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin said Ramsdale should not have been forced out of the classroom.

This is stupid. I'm glad the ACLU is on this.

While I have no love at all for the ACLU, this is a case where they might actually accomplish something useful. I hope this lady is vindicated for an obvious, idiotic and rather stupid action by the school board. There is NO justification for their actions. AT ALL.

Ya this is quite stupid. It's not like she threatened the school or her students in any way. Lots of people own guns. My brother's Facebook profile picture shows him holding a rifle. I don't see what the big deal is.

Whenever I agree with Mr. V

You know there's no debate about it

This is simply a knee jerk, reactionary auto-response driven by a case of 24 hour news cycle driven paranoia. Nobody wants to seen as the person who didn't investigate the one in a million chance that someone with a gun might be a criminal threat. Because you know damn good and well some idiot will get on the internet and the cable news and begin the persecution cycle against the school. So what do they do? They "launch an investigation" and the press jumps all over that. It's a cycle that's simply indicative of the right here, right now media. It perpetuates itself.

Feed the ****ing bear at any cost.

This is just dumb.

This is simply the result when schools adopt a zero-tolerance policy. Zero tolerance policies are simply institutionalized stupidity, in which they are proud to say "we will ignore all logic, mitigating factor and exceptional circumstances when it comes to drugs or weapons." Obviously, a teacher using firearms off campus is perfectly acceptable and the school has no reason to care. However, the same "anything and everything gun-like is automatically evil without regards to reason or logic" that leads to kids getting suspended for water pistols leads to crap like this. Hopefully the fact that his teacher is an adult will make this moronic administrators realize just how stupid they have become.

Alright so I got the rest of your post.....but the fact that this teacher is an adult means what exactly? No school shootings by stressed out, deranged adults I'm guessing?

Idiotic school decision. Good to see the ACLU defending the 2nd Amendment.

It seems to me that they would be defending the 1st amendment, here, rather than the 2nd.

Considering the ACLU's anti-2nd amendment stance I would have to say you are correct. IF she pulled a Phelps they would probably still defend her.

This is a tricky situation. The only thing I can say is that this woman is incredibly stupid. What she did was miles away from p.c. and people that are not careful, well thats what they get.

Are you talking about her having a Facebook account?

No, I was talking about her picture, but now that you speak of it, maybe having a fb account is not such a great idea either.

What could possibly be wrong with the picture?

It means that the administration (more importantly the courts) will have to take her seriously. Students have few rights at school, and find it extremely hard to defend what rights they do have. Adults are not treated in the same fashion.

Maybe you could start of a comedic list of protectionisms lacking statistical justification.

It might in fact be a loaded gun,(figuratively speaking) to have an ultra liberal org like the ACLU involved at all. The suspension is bull, but to be expected, in light of the gun grab lobby and the teacher unions being siamese twins on such matters.

Do you realize that the teacher's union represents the teacher?

This is a stupid decision by the school board, but there are a lot of things we DO NOT know.

A few points.

1. Was there anything in her contract about display in any form whatsoever the use of firearms?
2. Where was the photo taken?
3. How many years experience does she have and what are the tenure laws in her state?
4. What are the rules in the school district regarding conduct outside the workplace.

While I disagree with many of the things school boards do regarding teachers, when you become a public school teacher you know you come under higher, unfair scrutiny, and any and all actions will come under the microscope - whether it is legal or not.
