14-times Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps caught with bong cannabis pipe | News | News Of The World

TAMPA (AP) — Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged "regrettable" behavior and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.

In a statement released to the Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

Phelps said: "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

I say give him a break. He's young and pot smoking is a thing that is common among young people.

So what. It sucks that he has to apologize for this.

He can smoke weed after he is done swimming. Now we need him in tip top shape to win another 8 gold medals at the next summer olympics, not having the munchies.

Though it is insanly stupid that he has to apologize for smoking weed, give him a break he's won 14 gold medals.

What more do we want from him?
He's talent is in swimming, and he's already proved he is one of the best. Let the boy smoke some.

I feel like pulling my old college bong....I mean bird whistle out now:mrgreen:

Don't give the illusion like you are clean. We all know it's not hidden anywhere, except behind the Sunchips (which compliment it nicely :D )

I can't believe he ****ing apologized for that. People that apologize for no goddamn reason when they've done nothing wrong really lose my respect.

His endorsements stem from the court of public opinion.

Unless he finds mass acceptance for his actions or pacifies those who would shun him, it is in his personal self interest to avoid role model suicide and character assassination.

I'm licking the cheesy cheesiness from Cheetos off my fingers right now....Oh ice cream sounds good now.

But let's be realistic. Swimming isn't really a career you can bank on. He makes his money in endorsements. That's the reason he has to apologize.

I do agree its stupid that society's view on Mary Jane has created this condition. I don't think it's any reason to lose respect for the guy.

The sport of swimming could kick him out just say as pro football could if he were a pro football guy. Either way the endorsements are gone.

Potsmoke harms your lungs.

Bull****!

Couldn't agree more. All that should matter is how good his bud is.

Man smokes weed. Man wins 8 gold medals.

Conclusion? Weed is good.

Inductive Reasoning:

Michael Phelps has won a trillion gold medals.
Michael Phelps has been caught smoking weed.
There, for Smoking weed wins a trillion gold medals.

It was either that or concluding something like:
Michael Phelps is part aquatic-beast.
Michael Phelps smokes weed.
Aquatic-Beasts smoke weed.

What a ****ing dumbass!!! What kind of idiot puts his millionaire life in jeopardy?

some endorsements opportunities are gone, others have opened up.

I agree.

It's not society's view that the issue here. It's that weed is illegal, and he's breaking the law. Whether or not we agree with law isn't exactly relevant.

Look, I have to look at this 2 completely different ways. As a former party girl, I see no issue with anyone smoking weed. It's a mellow drug. But also as a former partier, I knew it was illegal, so I kept it hidden. I wasn't stupid enough to allow myself to get kicked out of school smoking dope in front of some dingdong with a camera. Have some sense, people!

As a mom, I'm a little disgusted in Michael Phelps. Save your smoking for when you're not the hottest athlete in the rag sheets right now. My son is a budding swimmer, and at the suggestion of his coach, I had him follow Michael Phelps. I don't want my kid to know about this indescretion. I don't want my kid to think you can suck off a bong & still be an athletic giant because in reality, it doesn't really work that way. I say this as someone who use to get stoned before working out. Ouch! The heart racing was awful. It's a good thing I quit working out. lol

So I am torn. I don't think smoking weed is horrible, but I think people who are role models (and make millions hawking goods as role models) should clean up their acts for the time they have in the spotlight.

Up in Smoke part two:cool:

We can create a better, more relevant, name then that.

I can picture Phelps swimming labs and every time he touches the side of the pool has to pop up and rip a bong, and then continue.
