Michael Steele becomes first black RNC chairman

I think it was Rush that said it, but can't remember for sure.

So you would still have that exact same avatar if Obama was white? His race has nothing to do with it?

Hobo, I know we discussed this in another thread, and you apologized for your incorrect assumption. I appreciate that. Since others reading this thread may not have read the other, I'll restate here that this is the hat Aretha Franklin wore to sing at the inauguration. It was a fashion atrocity and has made it's way all over the www on kittens, children, political figures, celebs ... etc. It cracks me up.

eta: the hat

What political thread would be without Brad and Angelina?

Yeah, I made both posts before I read your reply. Sorry 'bout that.

I was just reading this in another thread. Cudos to you, Dan.

These are the thing I disagree with Michael Steele on:

"More funding for adult stem-cell research, but not embryonic." -The government should not be funding any of it.
"Support affirmative action and its improvements." -Racial quotas are unconstitutional.
"Led commitment to $70M in grants to minority-owned business." -No government handouts.
"Use anti-terrorism tools on criminals in our neighborhoods." -Not the purpose of antiterrorism laws.
"More enforcement against Drug Trafficking." -The War on Drugs is lost, stop wasting resources.
"Affirms marriage is between one man and one woman." -I agree on marriage, but the law must allow civil unions of some kind to all citizens.
"Mandatory sentencing guidelines for child sex offenders" -Every case is different, judges should be given some discretion.
"Reinstate college-level grant and loan programs" -No grants, I could live with loans, but prefer them to be from private institutions.

These are the things I agree with Michael Steele on:

"Roe v. Wade should remain in place."
"Supports Bush's veto of embryonic stem cell research."
"Moratorium on gas taxes until price stabilizes."
"Create and sustain real energy independence."
"Solar and renewables are the energy sources for the future."
"Personally opposed to the death penalty." (To a degree.)
"No ban on guns; focus on enforcement instead."
"Let businesses avoid burdensome and ineffective system."
"I don't need government dictating socialized medicine."
"Spend more on care and less on bureaucracy."
"Rumsfeld wouldn't be my secretary of defense."
"Flexibility for some ownership over retirement choices."
"Make tax relief permanent and repeal the death tax."
"We need a clear strategy, and to pressure Iraq gov't."
"Facilitated faith-based institutions to tap into resources."
"Government should have limited control over welfare & family."

So, for the most part, I am happy with this pick. I hope he brings the party back to its core principles.

Michael Steele on the Issues

I disagree with the bolded. *sigh*, he's not what I call perfect, I'd venture to say he is more like McCain, but he is okay in that position.

Not a problem. But you keep quoting me while I'm editing! :) (I would spank you, but I fear with that screen name, you might like it lol)

Wait, why does he want Roe v. Wade to remain in place?

I agree that he is not perfect, but we should save those people for elected office.

His words: "My desire is that we follow what stare decisis is at this point."

"...have to live with the reality of a decision that was made 33 years ago."

Michael Steele on Abortion

Wow, one more reason for me to agree with him.

Thanks for clarifying Alex.

Are you saying that all those appointees that erod named aren't qualified?

Of course your response is that they aren't interested. Why do you think that is?

Do you always answer a question with a new unrelated question? We call this avoidance; not to mention trolling. :2wave:

Question marks denote a question. You used no question mark in that post.

Now, please answer my questions and quit projecting.

I forgot that you prefer semantics to debate, here you go: So you think it has NOTHING to do with qualifications and the fact that there are relatively FEW blacks who agree with the Republican platform and it's somehow a racism issue?

Now, now children.

In part, his selection might be due to the fact that he is black and people felt that the RNC "needs more blacks." Unfortunately that's way too narrow minded, but its understandable if some people believe that, as there are many narrow minded Americans. Just like some wanted Obama because he was black.

Let the issues be the issue.

There have been qualified black republicans.

Few blacks supporting the platform have to do with the Southern Strategy, so yes, there is racism involved, although not directly.

Why don't the qualified black republicans run?

Maybe they don't want to be called Uncle Toms or Token "negroes?" Just a guess. But maybe the Left counts on that.

Maybe they think the Republican base won't vote for them.

BTW, calling Obama the affirmative action candidate (Token negro) didn't stop him. ;)

Michael Steele the Great conservative :

Roe v. Wade should remain in place.

# Support affirmative action and its improvements. (Oct 2006)
# Affirmative action programs still necessary to close divides. (Aug 2006)
# We're still discovering affirmative action in corporations. (Apr 2006)
# Led commitment to $70M in grants to minority-owned business. (Apr 2006)
Expand minority-owned business opportunities. (May 2006)
More enforcement against Drug Trafficking. (Oct 2006)
More biomass, more hybrids, more fuel efficiency. (May 2006)

I really love watching Republicans trip over themselves calling this guy a Conservative. It's cute.

Exactly, which is why I'm still pondering his stance on abortion. But I like him because of it.

It's just cute to watch all these 'Abortion should be a states issue!' fall over themselves screaming that a guy who is pro-AA and in favor of keeping Roe V. Wade in place is one of them. I guess they'll no longer call McCain a moderate considering he's 'pro-illegal'. Bunch of ****ing hypocrites.

Yeah I know what you mean.

I hated it when Obama and McCain said that abortion should be state issues.

I like Mike Steele's "let's just ****ing forget about it and move on" mentality.

Yeah, let's keep those abortions going.

lol, I'm pretty sure Obama isn't for leaving it to the states.

What do you want, a brownie button?

Nope. Don't need one. I had been predicting for quite some time that the Neocons were going to be kicked to the curb after getting their butts handed to them by the Democrats. I actually predicted this as far back as 2005, and Bush supporters called me crazy. Now it is official. The Neocons ARE kicked to the curb, along with the ideology of fake Conservatism they attempted to foist upon this country. Want to know where Neocon ideology is right now? You need look no further than the nearest garbage can, where I am sure you will find copies of "Rebuilding America's Defenses" by Dick Cheney, the PNAC Manifesto, and various writings by Leo Strauss and Irving Kristol.

Don't mind me. I am just gloating.

Gloating? What are you gloating about? Two trillion in deficit spending? I have seen you rail about the "perceived" excesses of the Republican President and Congress, but what fascinates me is the silence while the Democrats spend this nation into bankruptcy. How do you think they will pay for all the pork they will pass? Printing money? Expanding the National Debt beyond $15 trillion?

Let's look at one tiny fact; the ONLY Congress in modern history to ever balance a budget was the Republican congress. Yet you think that one can fight two wars, deal with 9-11, and deal with hurricane Katrina while continuing to balance the budget? That requires much more than suspending one's disbelief, it takes a naiveté beyond Walt Disney's fantastical cartoons.

Yes, you can gloat with the other minions out there who in their hypocrisy railed about Republican deficit spending but now cheer it on as if spending this nation into permanent debt on Liberal pork is a GOOD thing.

Yes, to many in this nation up is down, down is up, good is bad and bad is good. It’s an Alice in Wonderland moment that will soon get slapped with the hand of REALITY and then people will once more look back and say; “what in the hell were we thinking.” Or perhaps it should be; “not thinking.”
