Interesting that with all of the times I have heard anti-death penalty activists claim that the US is the only industrial democracy that has the death penalty, ALL THREE of east Asia's industrial democracies (Japan, Rep. of Korea, and Taiwan) all maintain use of the death penalty.

TOKYO (AFP) – Japan on Thursday hanged four convicted murderers, officials said, carrying out the country's first executions of the year despite international criticism.

I actually didn't know that Japan had the death penalty.

All three industrial democracies in East Asia do. It is nothing new, but it receives comparatively little attention in the international press because it isn't used here with the frequency it is in the US.

I know that, but it was a part of the Samurai code of ethics known as Bushido.

If it considered a honorable way of dying I would think criminals would be banned from such practice.

They don't receive the same amount of news, because it happens so rarely when compared the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Iran and so on.

You may want to keep in mind that violent crime is MUCH lower in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan than it is in many parts of the United States.
