House Passes 2009 SCHIP Bill

I don't have kids. Why should I have to pay for other people's kids getting educated?

I would actually agree with this. I think people should pay their own way and I shouldn't be forced to pay for someone's education whom isn't me. But at the very least, this form of tax is levied to everyone, not just a group. It would be even more egregious if taxes on tobacco were increased to pay for education.

Then you shouldn't mind paying more taxes for child health care. Why do you think it's appropriate to target a specific group of people and make them pay for it. Why don't you open your wallet instead of stealing from others.

They have to raise money for the program, which I feel important. I'm cool with any way they can raise it.

So you wouldn't mind if we took over Saudi Arabia to take their oil and use some of the funds from selling it to pay for this? Interesting.

I pay a crapload of taxes for schools and I don't have kids. I don't complain, because it's in the benefit of society as a whole.

I shouldn't have to pay child support for someone else's kids. Just mine, and if I feel generous, then I can donate something to them. I should not be forced to do it.

Hey, how about these bills?

1) There is a huge drug problem on the streets. How about we tax the bejesus out of prescription drugs for sick people to pay for ridding the streets of drugs?

2) Prostitution is rampant, so lets tax the hell out of people with children, say $100.00 a kid per year, to clean up prostitution.

3) There is a lot of white collar crime, so let's put a tax on every stock trade to help clean it up.

4) Each time there is a "wardrobe malfuction" on TV, and a boob is shown, everybody with a TV gets taxed for watching it, even if they didn't watch it.

5) There is a huge problem with child molesters using the internet to entice children. Put a tax on every computer.

6) There are a lot of potholes in the streets, so let's charge a tax on those who ride the bus to pay for them.

7) There is a mess of an election in Minnesota, and it is still being hammered out in court. Lets reinstitute poll taxes in Mississippi to pay for the election contest in Minnesota.

8) A guy in California just killed off his whole family, then killed himself. We need to tax hunting rifles now.

9) I have to go take a leak, so let's tax YOUR toilet.

10) Washington is full of idiots, so let's tax learning. Every time you enroll in a class, you pay a federal idiot tax.

Pretty idiotic stuff, huh? Not any more idiotic than the SCHIP bill.

For the sake of argument...

You are bettering your society by educating children. These children grow up to contribute to society. They apply their education to their career path and the country grows.

I agree with this (I was just playing devil's advocate).

In this case, so the money comes from smokers. Bottom line, it will be a better society with healthier children.

No, of course not. What a silly argument.

So what happens when they grow up so healthy they don't smoke and there is no money left to fund the very program that made them so healthy? :2razz:

But you were cool with "any way they raise it". So what? Now you're saying that there are appropriate means of taxation to raise this money and that "any way" isn't actually any way? So why don't we make a Middleground tax and take all your money to pay for it? Is that appropriate?

Yeah, well just you wait. There will be an obesity tax eventually. Government wants nothing more than to plunge its hands deeper into our pockets. Bunch of f'n pirates.

Barack Obama: "Yo ho ho, and a bottle of Chardonnay".

I did think of that, actually.

Without a doubt, the pool would most certainly shrink as the number of smokers grows smaller with each and every year. They would then have to look for another source of income. I'm thinking taxing people who watch reality TV a good choice.

Well attacking another country didn't even cross my mind.

When there is talk of taxation, I naively think it has to do with raising revenue within the country's population. :2razz:

I think taxing Canadians is a much better idea. They like it. They like it.

Alright, fair enough. Then you'd be ok if your country passed a Middleground tax to pay for something like this.

Hey, the tax on Canadians was MY idea. LOL.

Buy tobacco from your local indian reservation. No taxes!!!

Well we do think you guyz are such whiney ******s, LOL.

Yeah, no doubt we have been taxed-whipped here in The Great White North.

You can't get blood from a stone. :rofl

But I do pay my share of taxes for other people's benefit. It's part of the greater whole, IMO.

My hometown of Cornwall has been a haven for cigarette and booze smuggling for years. There are a lot of very rich aboriginals in those parts.

In the US, it's part of the greater hole. That's where the Federal government puts all the tax money it takes in.

Well it's up to you-- the citizens--to keep your government honest, fair and accountable.

Billions of your tax dollars have gone missing in Iraq, and the story dies a quick death. That, to me, is completely outrageous.

Here in Canada, there was a scam in which our Liberal government burned about a million in shady deals. That was over 3 years ago, and people are still bitching about it, while being "forced" to vote for a mostly unpopular leader.

Not even going to pretend to understand the logic behind this.
