That's right. You heard it correctly. The Federal government is about to put a 61 cent tax on each pack of cigarettes in order to pay for the SCHIP program. Taxes will also be levied on cigars, smokeless tobacco, and all other tobacco products. This means that, if you are a smoker, or if you chew, the government is going to take more money out of your pocket and give it to someone else.

Now Bush had his problems (a whole crapload of them), but at least he vetoed this theft of money from taxpayers last year after Congress passed it. But there is a new moneygrubber in town, and his name is Obama.

Article is here.

An excellent editorial about what SCHIP means for smokers is here
.

The Senate is taking up the bill right now, and if you are against the Federal government redistributing YOUR money to others, now is the time to let your Senator know that a vote for this bill means one less vote for him when he comes up for reelection.

Wow. As if smokers did not already have enough problems...

I have to disagree with you here. I am all for SCHIP. They need money to fund it and better to tax on an item like cigarettes to pay for it than print up more money they don't have to do it.

Since when is smoking or chewing tobacco a right/product/service the government can't tax?

Why is this a bad thing?

Because State sponsored theft is a bad thing. There are already more money in taxes on tobacco than there is actual price in the product itself. The Federal and State governments make more money off tobacco than the tobacco companies do themselves. And this goes to stuff not tobacco related. It's outrageous to continue stealing from people to fund larger government.

No, if they want to fund it, they should levy the tax to everyone. Not target specific socially demonized groups to pay for other groups of people. If you're all for SCHIP, then you should be all for bucking up the money yourself to pay for it.

That's pretty much how I see it, too. Plus, hitting the pocketbook of smokers will likely reduce the amount of smokers, so it's all in the benefit of health.

Here in Canada, smokes are almost $10.00 a pack. A lot of that is tax money that goes into our universal healthcare system.

Obesity actually consumes more health care dollars now than smoking.

Yeah, well just you wait. There will be an obesity tax eventually. Government wants nothing more than to plunge its hands deeper into our pockets. Bunch of f'n pirates.

Taking other people's money and using for something they may not advocate. Why would that be a good thing?

I pay a crapload of taxes for schools and I don't have kids. I don't complain, because it's in the benefit of society as a whole.

Ah, so because smoking is not something you partake in, it is okay? What if you were a smoker?

You are right, as a non smoker, I wouldn't foot the bill. I wouldn't mind though another tax that would be equal to all.

I mean who doesn't want health care for children?

I think everyone supports education. That is hardly comparable to the SCHIP.

I was. And while I was, I indirectly paid a crapload of taxes towards healthcare. As expensive as cigs are here, few--even hardcore smokers--seem to complain.

Then you shouldn't mind paying more taxes for child health care. Why do you think it's appropriate to target a specific group of people and make them pay for it. Why don't you open your wallet instead of stealing from others.

I don't have kids. Why should I have to pay for other people's kids getting educated?
For the sake of argument...

You are bettering your society by educating children. These children grow up to contribute to society. They apply their education to their career path and the country grows.

Great, I am so happy now that 35 year old childeren will get the health care they so deserve.
