Iran says AIDS doctors among US-backed plotters

Iran said on Monday that two doctors jailed since June were among a group convicted of a US-backed plot to overthrow the Islamic republic by creating social upheaval, Fars news agency reported.

"Among the four key elements arrested in this case there were two doctors named Arash and Kamiar Alaei," said the counter-espionage director at Iran's intelligence ministry, who was not named.

"Four people in this case who have been confronted were key elements who knowingly cooperated with US intelligence people in the region and fully implemented their demands," the official said.

The two brothers, who have been in jail since June, were known for their pioneering work in HIV/AIDS. Iran announced last week the group had been sentenced to undisclosed jail terms.

"People such as (US Under Secretary of State) William Burns, (Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs) Goli Ameri, (US official) Ramin Asgar and some other people linked with the US intelligence service in the region had a direct involvement in this project," the official charged, claiming the United States had spent 32 million dollars on the plot.

The intelligence official said the group sought to "incite social crises, organise street rallies and interfere in ethnic issues."

Does anyone believe this stuff! :doh

Oh I do, you know that President ImOnAJihad is a fart smeller...uh I mean a smart feller. ;)

Someone somewhere will ALWAYS believe this type of propaganda.
Is it effective?
Who knows.

I won't give the government of Iran any credibility at this point. If the want the court of world opinion to side with them they need to produce evidence. At this time they aren't even releasing how long they are going to be in jail.

Sounds like state sanctioned kidnapping to me.

Iran is a goofy place when it comes to this sort of thing. There are far more plausable scenarios than arresting aids doctors and blaming the great satan.

Would you believe Iran if they claimed the US was plotting to sabotage their nuclear program?

I would hope that we are in fact trying really hard in this endeavor, and knowing the U.S., we probably are. If not we should be. But that is a pretty generalized statement. I'm not inclined to believe them about these particular men simply because I harbor a great distrust for the Iranian government. Their history has shown them to be a gang of lying murderers.

They do indeed. Now do I believe we may be up to something to mess up thier nuke program?

Maybe....

But aids?

It definitely sounds shady. I wouldn't put it past the US to use any means necessary to disrupt Iran at this point though.

AIDS takes too long. If we could manage to give the Guardian Council lead poisoning.

Do you believe they were lying during the Iranian hostage crisis?

About what specifically? That's a pretty broad question and based upon an incident that took place 30 years ago. I'm not shunning your inquiry, I just need more specifics to answer intelligently.

The American embassy hostages were taken after the fall of the autocratic rule "Shah" who came to power in a CIA-British sponsored coup in the 50s. The conditions to release the hostages was the return of the Shah (was in America receiving cancer treatment) for justice and an American apology for its role in the 1953 take over.

Their history with the US has been riddled with conflict and disagreement. The US denied their right to self determination and still openly call Iran an "Axis of Evil".

I absolutely believe that the U.K. and the U.S. had a direct hand in the coup that ousted Mossedegh and placed absolute power in the hands of the Shah. I guess I'm not getting what you are asking in terms of "did Iran lie." Do you mean to ask me if I think Iran lied about the coup? If that's what you are asking you now have my answer. It's also a main criticism I have about western interventionism in the Middle East.

The U.S. and the U.K. did indeed interfere in the affairs of Iran and had a major impact upon how it has shaped up. But make no mistake, what Iran is today is not solely the fault of the U.S. or even the west. 30 years later the Iranian government is still exporting radical Islamic militarism, still supporting terrorists with arms, money and training, still sending their own terrorist units out to hunt and kill.

Iran itself is not evil, as there is right now a new "velvet revolution" under way...the people are not happy with their rulers. The ruling totalitarian theocratic oligarchy of Iran however is evil. To the core.

It's certainly possible that these doctors were in cahoots with US intelligence, but based on what we know (absolutely nothing) it is equally possible that Iranian counter-intelligence is making this up. Both sides have track records, so it really isn't fair to say either way what happened or who was in the right/wrong.

PErhaps you should explain yourself then.

Iran is not evil and out to launch nukes at the US. They hate Israel and the US for historical reasons. Isolating them only gives them more reasons to split the divide and push them towards other outcast nations.
