Poll confirms US image problem ahead of Obama debut

I could really care less what people think of me personally. Because of this I could really care less what others think of the US. Sometimes you have to be a dick in order to do the right thing.

That is a fine and noble sentiment, as long as you aren't interfering in a lot around the world.

Simply false. As I showed, Europe has been in the business for 800 years at least, while the U.S. has only existed for 234 years.

Even longer, we have had free markets and capitalism for thousands of years, but not the same way as it is now.. Consumerism is a relatively new thing.. I would say its American.

Then you would just be wrong again. You have a helluva streak going.

Pray Tell . . . What was Adam Smith's Trading Company ?

Pray Tell . . . What Continent was John Stuart Mill born on ?

The notion of "Consumerism" is more accurately associated with its most blatant manifestation, the Rise of the British Empire, where the buying power of the English middle class, and control of the seas and British ports, inflicted on the World an Empire on which the Sun never set.

Nah, that was just free markets and regular capitalism, conquer and gain type of policies, not consumerism as a driver for the economy like in the US.

Yes, the selling of goods, and thus the buying of goods, is a new thing.

Simply false, as I detailed in the previous post.

The middle Class of England, used consumerism as a driver for their economy, and thier Military, and thus the creation of an Empire upon which the Sun never set.

The sun is certainly setting now. England is bankrupt, their economy looks unhealthy even when comparing with the US.

Perhaps consumerism is English... I wouldnt know, but in todays world its mostly American.. Manufacturing and exports are driving the European economy for example.

It's great we had a president that didn't give a hoot about what anybody thought of him or his actions while defending our great nation against foreign enemies.

lol.

Nice contradiction.

Apparently you don't subscribe to the Ron Paul world of not making unnecessary enemies.

"Let's defend ourselves in a way that results in killing 1 terrorist but pissing off his next 15 buddies so that they take up arms against us!"

Sorry but you are completely wrong what we had in the past was mercantilism, protectionism, and neo-mercantilism. Free market economies have never really existed.

Ever since Rome we had free markets and capitalism in Europe.

Not exactly. Rome was largely built on economic conquest by the state which in itself is not a free market.

What we have today is managed trade. Free trade is actually quite impossible to maintain as those who have the power to change the framework do so to eliminate the free part and consolidate their power into oligopolies or monopolies. It's been said that the biggest detractors to free market capitalism is business.

I think he might have meant the Treaty of Rome.

Otherwise it wouldn't have made any sense.......although this is Max isn't it.

Geez..

We had almost the same type of free markets that we have, those we had for about 2000 years in Europe, ever since Roman times.

That argument doesn't follow that they are free. The Roman times weren't free either. State conquests to bring in huge sums of gold to the internal market is hardly 'free.'

The only "free market" we've seen occurs in anarchy and quickly disappears.

The same happens today.

Not really. Name me a country that's economy is based on invading another and taking all their stuff.

The US of A.. Their military budget and defense expenditures are getting close to 1 trillion a year. The US cannot make it without such a big military, their economy is to dependent on it, and for it to continue to be so big the US have to fight some wars or some silly "wars on terrorism" and something to have the military be active, or else there is no justification to keep spending that amount of money on it, while the rest of the US is falling apart.

LOL. US military expenditures at most are around $650 billion. That's not a trillion dollars. Furthermore, the total US economy is $13 trillion. Explain to me how a $13 trillion economy can't exist without $650 billion in military expenditures. That would require a 20x multiplier. Really.

Furthermore the military does not go out invade someone and take all their stuff.

Try again.

If you add veterans cost, homeland security, the war on terror, Iraq and Afghanistan costs, the military and defense related spendings are very close to 1 trillion EVERY year.
