Iran president: 'Not feasible' for Israel to live

Do we have a Supreme Leader who picks them or do the people pick them?

I believe the people who are nominated by the parties to be in the primaries are nominated by themselves and approved by the parties. And the only way to be elected in the US it to represent either the republicans or the democrats.. Am I wrong?

No, you're right. People do nominate themselves and present their merits for nomination in the primary election. They don't have to have the approval of anyone but the voters.

In Iran there was actually over 1000 candidates, then 6 in the final rounds.

In the end in the US there are only two real choices.

Except for the fact that there are dozens of candidates from each party every election that throw their names in the ring.

And in the end in Iran your only choice is the Supreme Leader's choice.

To stand for a party they must have the approval of the party. And the only way of becoming president is to be member of one of the two parties. Correct?

Nah.. Those 1000 candidates are there by their own will and not picked by the supreme leaders, all of them just have to go through their approval. Just like anyone who actually want to be elected in the US have to be approved either by the democrats of the republicans.

And the both parties consist of about 40% of the US electorate respectively, while in Iran the candidates are chosen by a single person.

And out of those 1000 the Supreme Leader picks the ones he likes. Sure a 1000 people sign up for the chance at his approval, but that still doesn't help your case that Iran is in the least bit democratic.

Now you are talking about the primaries. I am talking about becoming a candidate for the primary and be in a primary for one of the two parties, then you have to be accepted by the party "leadership/committee" first, not the whole party and all its voters.
Dont spin this anymore, you perfectly well know my point is valid.

You dont have a clue about Iran.

Max, your point truly isn't valid.

Literally anyone can apply to be President. All they have to do is get the required number of signatures on their petition. Yes, it would be harder if you're just an average joe trying to get signatures to get on the primary ballot in all fifty states, but everyone still has the opportunity.

Yes it is, the leaders and the parliament is elected in a relatively free process, just like all the democracies of the west are also in a relatively free process.
In most democracies in Europe, prime minister candidates are directly nominated by the party as the party leader and prime minister candidate, none of the people have a say in this. They elect the party with the leader as an "automatic" leader. Nowhere in history has any party lost a huge amount of voters because of their selection of party leader and prime minister candidate.

How many times do you have to read it, Max? It is not a free election if 100% of the candidates have to be approved by a single person.

Parties in Europe aren't just one person. They are made up of thousands if not millions of people who all have a say in that choice. And if they don't like the candidate put forth they are free to vote for a candidate who could have wildly dissimilar views.

You dont have a clue about Iran.

Perhaps you dont have a clue.. Ever thought about that? I know Iran is repressive and a bad country. But still, it is a democracy.

And the main point here is that their leader, the president is elected by the people. The same guy who said those things about Israel.

The council is 12 people.. No, its not 100% free, nor is elections in the US nor Europe, like I have demonstrated. And that is because of "parties".
But Irans leader is democratically elected, and Iran is a democracy, just like European countries and the US.. Perhaps not as many %, but it certainly is democratic.

Yes, but everyone knows that you can only be elected president if you are approved by the republican OR democratic party. Isnt that right? How many percentage in total have anyone outside these two parties had the last 20 years? I am sure its not more than 10% in total in the last 5 elections.

The council is 12 people.. No, its not 100% free,
No, it is exactly 0% free. Everyone of those twelve people are appointed by and can be removed by the Supreme Leader.

If you can't see the difference between political parties consisting of millions of voting members and one guy deciding who gets to be the figurehead then you seriously have problems man.

But Irans leader is democratically elected, and Iran is a democracy, just like European countries and the US.. Perhaps not as many %, but it certainly is democratic.

They get to choose the guy that gets to have his name in the news. He has absolutely zero power.

Since a majority of the people in this country belong to one of those two parties its not really surprising is it?

How many of Iran's presidents haven't been chosen by the Supreme Leader?

I dont agree with you on these things.. On the second paragraph, I did not say those things.. I just compared the systems to show that elections in the US and Europe arent free either.. 0% is just untrue.

None of them have been chosen by the supreme leader..

How many of the presidents in the US have not been approved by their party before they participated in the primaries?

Is this actually quoted anywhere? All I can find is the AP article on different sites without a direct quote.

The government of Iran is also elected by the people, if you cant admit that, there is something really wrong here..

The only candidates allowed to be voted on are those approved by the religious mullahs who are NOT elected. That is NOT a democracy.

Edit

Freedom House rates Iran as Not Free

"Democracy is a form of government in which power is held by people under a free electoral system"

The government in Iran is elected BY THE PEOPLE... Both parliament and president..

The influence of parties, the constitutions and moral standings of Christianity in our electoral process is comparable to the influence of the Islamic parts of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Except that the Guardian Council has the right to exclude candidates. There is no similar exclusion of candidates in the United States or other democratic republics. Iran is Not Free and most certainly is NOT a democracy.
