Obama to End Military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Policy

I hope you realize that since the font was designed to be easily read that your claims that it makes your head spin seem to be fictitious, unless of course your "clear type" isn't set accurately.
Btw, sorry bout your cold.

It looks like script and the letters kinda jumble... maybe its the cough medicine, or its design is the fail. :rofl

And Coolguy, your font sucks. It is harder to read than the forum default, and in any case, multiple fonts on the page automatically contribute to readability issues.
Thank you.

I've noticed that in the past too. I can't see it now because I'm a Platinum member, but in the past I have noticed that it does seem to take cues from certain key words and show banners based on the topics being discussed.

Yeah. It's the ensuing unintentional hilarity that tends to follow-- especially since damned near everything advertised on the Internet is either a dating service or a gray market pharmacy.

More than half the banner ads in the Middle East forum are for Muslim mail-order-brides.

That's a "clear type" problem.
What operating system are you using?

 I am not going to install a special font to read your posts.

Just post it regular and I will be happy to address you. EVERYONE is hating on your fonts. :rofl

You don't have to install anything. :doh
It is already a default font and installed and why you may be having problems reading it would be because "clear type" isn't on.
You turn it on and all of a sudden my font as well as many web pages that use "clear type" fonts become easier to read.

(I am only bolding to make it easier to read at this time.)

I have vista, clear type is on. Your font sucks. FAIL

Proof, please.

Proof of what? That it would hurt enlistments? Or that it would add to the present enlistment woes?

Like yours it is my opinion. Except my opinion is based on actual military service. Yours is based on, well I have no idea.

Then that's your problem, not theirs.

Well if we have a "don't ask don't tell" going on right now I would say it is not a problem since gay people are still serving. It was also not a problem for the 12 years I served.

But 80% of the country isn't so homophobic that A) they're against gays openly serving in the military, and B) they're SO against the idea that it would affect their performance and/or their decision to sign up.

Who said anything about "homophobic" people? Just because someone does not want someone of the same sex looking at them sexually is not "homophobic." Do you even know what the term means? It has nothing to do with fear.

Well lets use prop 8 in CA as a yard stick. So you are saying basically that 53% of the people in CA are homophobic? What would the numbers be for the rest of the country?

The military is much more conservative than CA, so how many "homophobes" are you thinking a "few" is?

ho⋅mo⋅pho⋅bi⋅a:

unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality.

This has nothing to do with fear of homosexuals, and everything to do with what people think are acceptable morals.

What does their religion have to do with it anyway? Many of the gays in the military are probably Christians themselves.

whether they are Christians or not is irrelevant.

Someones religion has much to do with how they perceive homosexuality.

But you acknowledged that gays already serve in the military. Why would you balk at joining if the government didn't pretend that there are no gays in the military?

They don't "pretend they are not in the military. They don't want to know who is or isn't. Neither do I.

Even though I have friends who are gay, I do not and would not live with them. I do not approve of the lifestyle, they know this. Why would I want to live etc with someone who is gay in the military?

No, your eyes fail, especially since the font was designed to be easily read.
Glad to hear it wasn't a clear type problem though. :tongue4: Next question is, is it configure appropriately?

Although I do wonder if you even checked because you thought you had to install something. :crazy3:

And there are actually polls of those serving that back up your opinion.

:doh

:2rofll:

Ask me if I care.
:2funny:

You don't care?!!!

Then why were you trying to defend the virtues of the font by saying that it was easier to read? That implies that you do care, mister! Oh, you can pretend all you want, but we know the truth!

My experience from actual military service, and being openly gay through it, is that it is not an issue. Do you think about what someone is thinking of you sexually during extreme conditions like combat? If so, then you are the one who cannot focus on the mission and you are the one who does not belong in the military. Sex is the last thing on my mind in those situations.

Interesting how people who "do not approve of the lifestyle" do not understand that gays are everywhere, including the military. Chances are you come across one everyday and you probably shared a barrack with at least one. Just because you do not approve of the lifestyle does not mean it is not already near you. To think otherwise is nothing short of denial and is not at all grounded in reality.

Like I said, if serving with openly gay people would have caused you to not enlist, then that is YOUR problem, not theirs.

Well, 79% of Americans favor allowing gays to serve openly in the military, including 91% of people aged 18-29...and that was in 2003. If anything I would assume that the public has become more liberal on this issue since then, not less.

Poll: Overwhelming Support for Gays in the Military

Even of the 9% of people aged 18-29 who are presumably against it, most of them probably don't care about it enough to actually affect their decision to enlist or not.

Acceptable morals? WTF? Is it REALLY such a high priority for you to condemn the "morals" of people with alternative lifestyles who aren't hurting you? Do you think that gamblers, drinkers, smokers, people who curse, and people who engage in premarital sex should be banned from the military too? What would THAT do to enlistment?

Then I suggest that you personally continue "don't ask, don't tell." If you don't ask, they probably won't tell you. But if they do, deal with it and grow the **** up.

Because you're being paid to do what your superiors tell you to do? Because you want to defend the country? Because you want to travel the world? For any of the other usual reasons people join the military in the first place?

I honestly don't think polls of what the People think should carry any weight.
It's the polls of those serving that should.

Heck, I don't like polls in the first place so it should be actual studies.

Polls don't really carry much weight to begin with. It's not like the poll will suddenly institute any kind of change. It's just the collected data of what the public opinion is. And as far as that goes, I don't think one has to serve in order for their opinion to be valid.

lol... maybe so (actually "absolutely!"), but we are the first in and we do most of the damage before other branches go in and finish the job.

The Air Force can be given credit with ending the first Gulf War quickly. That includes gays who served then.

I know. There really isn't a branch that isn't integral to the military's overall mission.

I think I recognized that with my last sentence.
But if opinion is to be used, it should be of those the change would directly effect... those who are serving.

And ... well... those polls show it just wouldn't be a good idea right now.

You wouldn't in general. They didn't serve.

I forgot what my original point was although I think it was something to do with caution and moving gradually.

Like only one person per day can come out of the closet?

No like we realise that it is probably okay for gays to serve in the military but don't give into PC idiocy to change everything in a day and just do it with caution as most things in politics should be done.

This approach may infuriate the liberal rationalist who gets his knowledge of politics from simplistic formulas and has no concept of the complexity of society and institutions but it is the sensible way to approach politics.

The individual or group of individual or even a generation can't hope to understand all the interconnectedness and latent functions of institutions and should therefore remember any change may have unintended consequences which suggests that caution, piecemeal change and continuity should be stressed.

Gay and straight men/women are already showering together in the military.

Men and women do not shower together in the military. Because of don't ask don't tell straight service members do not know who they are. When I served I am sure there were gays that served with me. And we probably showered at the same time. During my six years in the army I never knew a single male soldier that was gay at least as far as I knew. My point is that men and women shower seperatly for a reason. If gays are going to serve openly then they are going to have to accomidate everyone. Gays will have to have seperate showers from straight soldiers just as women shower seperatly from male soldiers. You wouldn't expect women to shower with men because they are attraced to each other physically. Gay men are attracted to other men so you wouldn't expect straight men to knowingly shower with gay men.
