Rockets from Lebanon reignite tension in Israel's north
By Borzou Daragahi and Raed Rafei
January 9, 2009

Reporting from Beirut and Dhaira, Lebanon -- Lebanese army and international forces bolstered troop numbers, stepped up patrols and declared a state of alert Thursday after an early-morning rocket attack on Israel from southern Lebanon threatened to widen the ongoing Gaza Strip conflict.

The rocket fire, which struck a nursing home and slightly injured at least two civilians, resurrected memories of the destructive 2006 war between Israel and the Shiite Muslim militia Hezbollah, an ally of the Gaza-based militant group Hamas.

Minutes after the attack, Israel responded by firing at least six artillery shells at the suspected launch site. Both Lebanese and Israeli authorities shut down schools in the area for fear of a military escalation as Israeli fighter jets flew low along the border. "We hope that it won't become an action that makes the situation more complicated," Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told reporters Thursday in Madrid as he toured world capitals in a quest for a Gaza cease-fire.

Another neighbor of Israel with a rocket fetish. Wasn't Lebanon required by UN Resolution 1701 (2006) to disarm all non-state militias in Lebanon with UN assistence and supervision?

Chapter 6:
"Acting in support of a request from the government of Lebanon to deploy an international force to assist it to exercise its authority throughout the territory, authorizes Unifil to take all necessary action in areas of deployment of its forces and as it deems within its capabilities, to ensure that its area of operations is not utilized for hostile activities of any kind."

Another fine job by the heads-in-their-ass folks at the United Nations.

Another fine job by the heads-in-their-ass folks at the United Nations.

They stick their heads up their butts so they will walk funny, and fit in with their salami bomb butt buddies they cannot call terrorists in any meaningful definition.

I really wish Israel could have waited to feel out the Obama administration before this, you guys are really out numbered; the majority of the United Nations (of tyrants too) is against Zionism and self-determination as I know you know (others see NAM link below for the numbers).

I do not want Israel to get too much of a feeling America cannot stab them in the back. I would like to throw a rock at you to keep you from being hit by the speeding obamanation. {I know, he is going to be ok, he said he loves Israel.}

The gross joke of the most recent UN resolution seeming to believe a “durable and fully respected cease-fire” could exist, without first demanding the Hamas Charter be changed and FORCE used to make it happen, reminds me of the Oslo fiasco. All Israel got out of Oslo was a tacit recognition of terrorism by the PLO as not being crimes, which was clear when the wheelchair shoving cruise director was captured in Iraq and the PLO fell all over itself claiming Clinton‘s signature was binding. The after thought of a letter from Arafat to change the Palestinian Covenant never produced results as you know. Basically in my opinion Oslo just gave aid and comfort.

Our local fish wrapper had nothing like the following, but had a couple of paragraphs on page 10, under the horrible things you are doing to the poor Palestinians:

“Stresses the urgency of and calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza;”

Billo will claim you must leave immediately, which is the impression the newspaper gave.

Calls upon Member States to intensify efforts to provide arrangements and guarantees in Gaza in order to sustain a durable ceasefire and calm, including to prevent illicit trafficking in arms and ammunition and to ensure the sustained re-opening of the crossing points on the basis of the 2005 Agreement on Movement and Access between the Palestinian Authority and Israel; and in this regard, welcomes the Egyptian initiative, and other regional and international efforts that are under way;”

Very on topic is the part in the new resolution about “including to prevent illicit trafficking in arms and ammunition,” which history shows spit balls and “Nonviolent resistance is futile!”

No need to reinvent the wheel:

You hot babe, you cute Israeli you, Israel is a Member State, not told to get out of Gaza now. I wish you could do your job, as “an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire“ is impossible unless Israel as a Member State “intensify efforts to provide arrangements and guarantees in Gaza in order to sustain a durable ceasefire and calm, including to prevent illicit trafficking in arms and ammunition." I think that might include killing every Hamas you see, making “arrangements and guarantees” their Charter is no more. After the threat of the Hamas Charter is gone “a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved by peaceful means.”

Hamas, Stop! {uh, it didn’t work}

*****

You are outnumbered:

“UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Wednesday voiced its strong condemnation of the escalation of the Israeli military aggression in the Gaza Strip and called upon Israel to end the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

Rockets do not help.

Rockets only hurt.

Rockets are a war crime.

Rockets must stop!

Like a banshee screaming into the wind. It is about as effective as a UN resolution.

Oh, crap, where did I put that last Estes with the camera nose cone...

Sad, but true.

Yet another example of a UN Resolution on the Middle East that goes ignored by the United Nations and completely unenforced. Israel should take this as an object lesson in regards to the current situation in Gaza.

Uh-oh. Gaza was winding down, and oil prices were dropping again.

Gaza was winding down? What news are YOU watching?

It's far enough along in its usual cycle that the pressure it was putting on oil prices is subsiding.

Re-ignite tensions?

Does this mean that there was a time, recently, where there was a lack of tensions? I mean honestly, it was inevitable that someone was going to shoot at Israel again.

Hizb'allah has denied that it was them that launched these rockets, and it is guessed that a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon have been launching the rockets.

I'm sure the wounded Israeli civilians will find great solace in that. Jeesh.

That is what i have heard as well and apparentley Israel has complained to the UN lol

What are you even going on about? I was providing information on this event, and I think a lot of people consider who actually is doing this an important question. I never justified the attacks; I didn't even provide my opinion on them. Stop being so judgmental.
