The incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon George Bush's doctrine of isolating Hamas by establishing a channel to the Islamist organisation, sources close to the transition team say.

The move to open contacts with Hamas, which could be initiated through the US intelligence services, would represent a definitive break with the Bush presidency's ostracising of the group. The state department has designated Hamas a terrorist organisation, and in 2006 Congress passed a law banning US financial aid to the group.

The Guardian has spoken to three people with knowledge of the discussions in the Obama camp. There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracising Hamas is counter-productive. A tested course would be to start contacts through Hamas and the US intelligence services, similar to the secret process through which the US engaged with the PLO in the 1970s. Israel did not become aware of the contacts until much later.

Yeah, look at that, Obama wanting to reverse the decision to isolate Hamas. Just freaking brilliant. I'm sure the Israelis just feel all kinds of safe with this genius coming to the WH. He starts this crap up and the first notion they have Iran is gonna get a Bomb out they'll attack, cause were I them, I sure as **** wouldn't put my trust in Obama.

It's a good thing they're not you then.

I think it's a wise decision.

The "I don't like you so I'm going to call you bad names and not going to talk to you" foreign policy of the Bush administration didn't produce great results.

Yeah, cause Hamas would keep being isolated. They really don't care about our notions of peace, they care about destroying Israel.

And the hug Arafat Clinton approach worked?

Got a peace agreement between Israel and Jordon in 1993. What's Bush accomplished. Other than starting the wrong war by mistake, I mean.

Whether or not that's true, you always continue to exercise diplomacy in war situations. Even as soldiers die, its the duty of government to exercise all options in order to mitigate further conflict. If it proves useless, then ok, but as a nation that has given itself the responsibility to set an example for the developing world, Obama is taking a correct approach.

The days of cowboy diplomacy are over.

Unless The Obama can convince Hamas that Israel -does- have a right to exist, he's just wasting his time.

We are rewarding Hamas for their incredible racism and nothing more.

Racism... and their insatiable desire for genocide.

Peace generally is something judged by lasting more then 6 months.

These "peace deals" you're so quick to drool over were merely pauses for the PA to rearm it's fighters. As has been proven out over time.

Well, seeing as Isolating Hamas has done such a great job bringing peace to the region, (I mean just look at how low the body counts are!) I have to say this is a terrible idea! He could like, end up starting a war or something!!!!

Tis kinda my point, history has shown no one is gonna do that, and well.. If HE doe sdo it, and peace breaks out, and everyone is happy... I'll eat my words, and be happy to do so. However, I'm not one of the O kool aide drinkers, and I don't for a moment think he has the slightest chance in hell.

The problem is this:

-Israel believes it has a right to exist
-Hamas disagrees.

Given that, how can there ever be 'common ground'?

Good step by Obama camp.

There is never going to be peace in that region! We need to just start facing that fact. The Palestinians do not want peace. The Israelis just want to be left alone on their tiny little sliver of barren land.

Muslim hatred of anybody not just like themselves is the cause of 100% of the problems in the Mid East. If it were Christians with their own tiny country it would be the same thing.

Here it comes again ....
Israelis are the poor victims to Palestinian/Muslim agression. Please.

Muslim hatred indeed.
If it was Christians who created a country by forcing out the Arabs, your damn right they'd be getting it just as bad.
If however, they created a state in a land that wasn't surrounded by Muslim nations and didn't force out the indigenous population. Then it would not be a problem.

Given that the entire conflict is driven by the fact that Hamas and Hezbollah refuse to recognize Israel;s right to exist and have vowed to not stop fighting until Israel is destroyed, I'm not sure how you can describe the situation as as product of anything BUT Palestinian agression.

Here's the problem with people like you. You can't get over the fact Israel was created. You harp on this, and legitimize the violence. Fine, the way Israel came into being wasn't the best method around, and caused lots of problems we get it.

But let's face facts here, Israel is a fact of life. It's not GOING anywhere.

The sooner the "original problem" is accepted as reality, the sooner progress can be made. Instead of spending countless lives on a an impossible goal, the sooner there will be peace.

But that's just it, people like you believe that accepting that reality is unjust, guess what, that implies the other alternative, the destruction of Israel. Either we destroy Israel, the region accepts Israel and works with that reality for peace, or Israel kicks the ever living **** out of them until they stop attacking her.

That's the three choices.

One is a second holocaust, one is a perhaps not the most just answer ALL things considered, but is the most beneficial AND least lethal way to go, and one has periodic wars and conflict till the end of days.

I'm all for option 2, but I'd rather option 3 then option 1 any day of the week.

Oh, boo hoo. It's well time to accept that you are not strong enough to keep out other's who want the same land.

Life is not fair. Survival of the fittest. Get over it. Move on. You LOST!

Blaming everything on one side is incorrect. Israel is not the innocent victim
