German billionaire kills self, family says

(CNN) -- German billionaire Adolf Merckle, one of the richest men in the world, committed suicide Monday after his business empire got into trouble in the wake of the international financial crisis, Merckle's family said Tuesday in a statement.

Merckle, 74, was hit by a train in the southwestern town of Ulm, police said.

His family said the economic crisis had "broken" Merckle.

He was number 94 on the Forbes list of the world's richest people. He had fallen from number 44 on the Forbes 2007 rich list as his fortune declined from $12.8 billion to $9.2 billion in 2008.

Wow...the guy kills himself because he lost some 3 billion dollars...which still left him with 9.2 billion dollars. Geez...I would be a bit perturbed at loosing 3 billion dollars, but certainly not despondent enough to kill myself. Not when my losses still left me a multi-billionaire.

Just a guess on my part but it may not have been the money. Could have been seeing something he spent so many years of his life building threatened.

Or, maybe he had committed illegal/fraudulent acts and was worried he would get caught? There has got to be more to this than just the lost of 3 billion dollars.

I agree. Seems there's more to the story than meets the eye.
