Richardson to withdraw as Commerce secretary

New Mexico governor cites pending investigation of business dealings

updated 38 minutes ago

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, tapped in December by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as secretary of Commerce, has withdrawn his name for the position, citing a pending investigation into a company that has done business with his state.

"Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact," he said Sunday in a report by NBC News' Andrea Mitchell. "But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process."

A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a lucrative New Mexico state contract.

Is there anyone associated with Obama not under investigation?
Rahm, Blago, Richardson, Hillary, rezko...

Sheesh.

I know that's right!

Do not think Pelosi is under investigation-------------------------YET?

You're right... shades of Bush, and that's not change.

Bush had to deal with politically charged BS.. plame anyone?

At least he'd been in office, Obama hasn't even taken the oath yet and all ready his "trusted people" are under the lens. Well, I guess this REALLY IS Clintons third term eh?

Oh, yes...of course! Tom DeLay is a victim, and Clinton is guilty as hell!

Is this part of his master plan to make it seem incredibly likely that he's guilty of some wrongdoing? Because I don't see how this does anything other than that.

Right now there are Democratic operatives busily hunting for anything they can find to use against a Republican official. You will see really petty stuff being thrown against the wall to try to offset the damage this revelation about Richardson will do.

Is it to Obama's credit that he didn't choose Richardson for a higher position?

Or just the way it worked out?

You sound so pathetically desperate. I pity you.

I'm not desperate, I'm LAUGHING at people like you. You spend 8 years tilting at windmills with Bush, yet your choice can't even take the oath without half the people around him under investigation for corruption. You believe wildly INSANE claims like "Bush lied, people died" but cannot see what's going on here.

If it wasn't so serious, it'd be the best comedy of the year.

That sucks...Richardson would've been a good Commerce Secretary. I hope that Obama nominates another free trader. The last thing he needs is to have Hilda Solis dominating his trade agenda.

Xavier Becerra, perhaps? Max Baucus?

If this isn't tantamount to an admission of guilt I don't know what is.

An admission of guilt is tantamount to an admission of guilt. Anything else is merely speculation without evidence.

NBC Nightly News says Richardson was more than nudged out by the Obamans.

Interesting. Did they say why and give sources? Not that I'm doubting you, I just didn't hear anything close to that during the 2-3 hours I had MSNBC on this morning so it must be a new tidbit I haven't heard yet.

Andrea Mitchell, IIRC, reported and my impression was that she was reporting off the record sources.

I'm sure that you are right... and if the MSM find that a Republican was $10 late in an income tax payment at the same time that a youtube video shows Obama passing cash to Blagojevich, they will investigate the hell out of that Republican!

I wonder if the investigation began before or after Richardson threw Hillery under the bus?

This is all so Clintonesque.

Yeah... Richardson speaks the language of the new "American" consuming masses passing right through his state on the way to bigger and better things.

Ah. I'm not a big fan of "off the record sources." Look what they did to Richard Jewell. I'll just wait until the grand jury has done it's thing, and see what the facts turn out to be. Not that I care one way or the other, it's just that character assassination by innuendo has become rampant in this gossip-thirsty society, and our journalistic standards have slipped so far into the gutter that we can't believe half of what we hear on the news nowadays.

Thanks for the info!

I would venture a guess that he's doing this for Obama at his own expense. If not I can't make much sense of this
