Israel launched the ground phase of its military operation against Hamas today. CNN reported:

Israeli troops began moving into Gaza on Saturday night, intent on taking out Hamas rocket-launching sites, Israel Defense Forces said.

"We have just a short while ago launched the second stage of the operation against Hamas infrastructure," IDF spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibovich told CNN.

"The goal is to try and take over some of those launching areas that were responsible for the many launches -- the thousands of launches, in fact -- toward the Israeli civilians," she said.

A statement from the Israel Defense Forces said that this second stage of the operation was intended to “bring about an improved and more stable security situation for residents of Southern Israel over the long term.”

The statement added that “large numbers of forces are taking part in this stage of the operation including infantry, tanks, engineering forces, artillery and intelligence with the support of the Israel Air Force, Israel navy, Israel Security Agency and other security agencies.”

Israel’s defense minister, Ehud Barak, said in a statement broadcast on television: “This will not be short. This will not be easy. I do not wish to delude anyone,” adding that the coming days will be difficult for the residents of the south of Israel.

“Our aim is to force Hamas to stop its hostile activity and to bring about a significant change,” Mr. Barak said. “We have carefully weighed our options,” he said, adding that “we have restrained ourselves for a long time but now we have to do what must be done” for peace and tranquillity.

let's hope they don't start a third intifada!

Obama's administration is going to be much more zionist than the current and past few, so I don't see what they have to worry about.

Why not???

that would make the war much longuer, with the consequence that more people would be killed, which in turn will be the cause of more distrust between Palestinians and Israeli...

maybe you could enlighten us on what exactly you base that off of

You can start with his appointment of Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff if you want. That pretty much says it all.

I would much rather see grassroots resistance in the tradition of the first intifada than being bombed into submission and going another few years before attempting to throw off Israeli oppression. Better now than later.

Yes, please. Let God protect them as they kill people.

In your opinion, what ONE THING will make Hamas stop launching rockets into Israel?

The Israelis think this will do it.

What do you think will stop the rocket attacks?

Gaza : escalade incontrôlée - lesoir.be

First kill: a Palestinian kid (11 others were wounded), by a shell fired by a tank at their house in Gaza.

Many sectors of Gaza are out of water and electricity, but according to the IDF "there isn't any humanitarian crisis"

let's hope he keeps the Palestinian civilians safe too...

They could have assured their own safety by refraining from attacking Israel.

So God should protect one group of people while they kill another? Very interesting.

seriously, how much different is that from everyday life in that ****hole

I guess they're getting used to it, with the blockade
