Possible ceasefire in Gaza

the problem is that they are using the strong way for years, and the only outcome was intifadas and more extremism.

If you want peace then you need to make concessions, it's not a mistery

1.) It's spelled "Mystery"
2.) Giving terrorists what they want to stop terrorism is UNACCEPTABLE and WILL lead to more terrorism.

I agree.

Doing so would partially neutralize Iran's propaganda machine.

You sure about that?
Iran and Hezbollah's popularity within the Muslim world is intense, it will only grow as Israel continues its bombardment of Gaza

Israels progress:
400 dead Palestinians
1 senior Hamas commander killed ...

Hamas started the fight.

Now they can deal with the consequences of their terrorist activity.

Both sides broke the ceasefire. Both have responsibility over their actions.

Quit acting like Israel is perfect in this

Yet more liberal rhetoric.

wow. How convincing, you just destroyed all my argument

Do you sometimes read my posts? At least parts of them? Because you said the same thing 10 posts earlier and I've already answered

I disagree: they've killed several important members and most of the other casualties were Hamas militants. There are 25% of civilians killed and it's dramatic, but 75% of the casualties were not innocents.

I haven't read of other top level Hamas members being killed save that Commander.

Israel tried this tactic twice in Lebanon, the same will happen in Gaza

Laila I think your wrong. The same will not happen in Gaza because Israel has learned a lesson from the 2006 war against hezbollah. They will not stop the attacks untill Hamas is defeated or until the katyusha rockets stop falling on Israel.

The same cycle always occurs with Israel.
Israel will be determined to finish this through perhaps even send in a ground invasion but then it'll bow to international pressure to ease off and it'll leave the job half done.

When you weight the pros (ineffective protection against rocket smuggling) and the cons (huge negative consequences on Palestinians, with the result that they support Hamas) it is obvious that the cons (see examples here http://www.debatepolitics.com/breaking-news/41754-possible-ceasefire-gaza-4.html#post1057866218 ) win.

It's as if you had an antivirus on your computer that
- is not effective
- attracts more viruses
- slows down your computer a lot

They were just effective in killing a Hamas commander. They need time to destroy as much of the Hamas infrastructure as possible and not let the international community pressure them to stop early this time like they did with Hizbollah.

You are right, there is a difference. But you still advocate their deportation, don't you?

And that is where Sgt and I part ways. I have no problem with a Palestinian state (or two) based in Gaza and the West Bank, BUT Israel has to be able to live in peace within their pre-1967 borders.

So you think that Jews have the right to occupy the whole territory of Israel + Palestine, and that the 1947 borders have no validity.

So, the non-Jewish people who lived there before 1947 should be deported, because they are a threat to Israel.

A question: what gives them that right? The torah or something like that?

I think now the 1947 borders are irrelevant. The Arabs rejected them. I advocate a return to the pre-1967 borders, but never a return to the1947 partition borders.

That would make disappear their reason of existence. They would not have any reason to attack Israel anymore

THeir raison d'etre is to completely destroy Israel, not to set up a viable two-state solution. I don't see why you can't understand that.

Israel has been treating them with kid gloves for the last two decades. That has only emboldened the terrorists. Now, the reaction of the international community does nothing but further embolden them. They can carry off their terrorism with impunity, knowing that when Israel responds, the international community will pressure Israel to back down. I am sure Israeli leaders see this. Hopefully they will have the backbone this time to finish the job rather than leave it half done like in Lebanon a couple of years back.

It didn't work last time in Lebanon because they cut the attack short due to international pressure. Then, the international community did NOTHING about the problem, leaving it to build in the north. That is something Israel will regret.

You don't think international pressure is going to cause it again? Really?

If i was to guess i'd actually say a week, maybe a week and a half and israel will back down.

I hope you are wrong, but I fear you may be right. Israel SHOULD have no regard for an international community who complains but doesn't bring anything viable and constructive to the table.

Umm...kinda funny that you should ask. The 1947 borders and territory lines have been declared by dozens of countries/nations OTHER than Palestine. The 1947 borders were based off of the old British territory markers from the British Mandate starting back during the 1919 Paris Peace conference when the Brits dismantled the Ottoman Empire and took control of the entire area.
