It's now a felony in Illinois to assault a retail worker who is enforcing face mask rules

Fantastic news coming out of Illinois today.

Time to deliver some justice to those who terrorize people who are just trying to save lives.

Who exactly do liberals expect to enforce the law against these crimes?

It actually is. It's called 'battery', and battery is almost always a felony here in CA. There are certain elements to be met, but it's not hard,.

Happy solution: do not lay hands on anyone.

Who exactly do you plan to call when this "battery" you speak of takes place?

Simple Assault is almost universally a misdemeanor.

Good luck arresting them. or bringing them to justice.

You'll only care when it happens to you or someone you love.

Virtue signaling by the Illinois legislature. It's already illegal to assault someone in Illinois.

I'm old enough to remember when people were told not to wear masks. That was 5 months ago.

We were told not to wear medical masks since they were in short supply and should be reserved for caregivers. Your memory is not that good and things change in the world too. Leeches used to be a cure-all for just about any illness does that mean we should still be using them?

I tend not to take an issue with this as long as a retail worker is not the person who initiates a physical confrontation.

A none masker pushs their way into a store should he the extra charge. If a retail worker grasp someone who isn't wearing a mask then IMO they should then also ve subject to the added punishment.

Everyone needs to keep their hands to themselves not a hard concept.

You memory is worse than mine. We were told not to wear them back in Feb and Mar because they allegedly didn't work. This came from the CDC, the WHO and the Surgeon General who all made press releases saying so.

Leeches don't work. Masks do. I guess the medievalists were running the WHO and CDC back in Mar.

They may have said they were not needed by the average person (for the reason I stated earlier) but no physician would ever say that "Masks don't work" How ridiculous is that? Why no link the them saying that masks don't work? Because you are delusional that why.

There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit. In fact, there's some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly," Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies program, said at a media briefing in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.
"There also is the issue that we have a massive global shortage," Ryan said about masks and other medical supplies. "Right now the people most at risk from this virus are frontline health workers who are exposed to the virus every second of every day. The thought of them not having masks is horrific."

If you say so.

Facemasks Won’t Protect From Coronavirus, Says CDC And WHO

With the amount of recorded cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, on the incline, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that facemasks are not effective in preventing the virus.

...

The World Health Organization (WHO) backs up the CDC’s claims of the ineffectiveness of mask usage if one is healthy.

“If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection,” WHO said in their “Advice for the Public” section of their site. Again, the use of facemasks is confirmed to only truly be helpful for healthcare workers.

We are worried about face masks but not about riots, looting, stealing, burning and assualt related tot he riots in American cities. More liberal craziness.

Oh for the simpler times when we only needed to worry about gay dudes ordering wedding cakes - and could refuse them for it...

Yes, but by tying 'mask related offense' with 'mandatory felony', will make a specific lasting impression on the general public.

I've been following some of the goings-on in California, and I'm beginning to think the infection explosion may not have been as much with Newsom, as with Californians' leniency.

That, and many of the people getting infected are essential workers living in multifamily dwellings. In other words, they get sick at work, and then bring it home to spread to the building.

Can you show me any quote where the president told anyone to assault someone for trying to enforce mask wearing? If not, I guess we can chalk this up to hyperbolic buffoonery.

Specifically in relation to Coronavirus? No, but he is on record as encouraging violence against those who protest against him.

It was a base misdemeanor. The now makes it an aggravated offense, and mandatory felony.

Thank God, I was worried the mask police were getting assaulted waaaay too much.

about time

Exactly, assaults on mask police were outta control. Meanwhile, rioters, looters, and arsonists are being let off the hook en masse.

Yay! Is it a felony to attack white retail workers for being white?

In other words, as new data came in, recommendations changed. Welcome to Science 101. :)

If you say so.

And where did the CDC or the WHO say "masks don't work"? The Daily Caller lied in their headline like always and you fell for it. Using them for your info is not too bright I'm afraid.

Was assault not already a felony?

The US decided to abandon the British practice whereby some offences (Hybrid or Electable Offences) could be prosecuted as either "summary" (equivalent to the US "misdemeanour") or "indictable" (equivalent to the US "felony") offences depending on the actual circumstance of the offence. In doing so, that meant that the several states had to vastly complexify (to coin a term) the criminal code in order to specify "degrees" with respect to many offences.

You might be interested to learn that there is no such criminal offence as "Battery" in the Criminal Code of Canada (which is the criminal code that is in effect throughout Canada - regardless of province or territory [or even "First Nations land"]).

I am not interested in the criminal codes of Canada or British practices in fact.
