Trump signs executive orders on coronavirus economic relief

It was an interesting move, but I don't see it a game-changer. And, it has the possibility to backfire spectacularly. I see this as a desperation 'Hail marry'.

Pelosi may not give anything if she comes back to the table, but instead lets it all (E.O.'s) get tied up in the courts and execution, and lets it implode back upon Trump.

The more it's tied up, the more Trump can claim to be in combat with The Swamp on behalf of the people.

Trump just acted to make sure people get less in their checks than they were before. While defunding Social Security and Medicare.
That's a pretty fair synopsis. He would've been smarter to just continue as it was, rather than cut everyone's bennies.

I really don't care about the truth or falsity of that. As politics, Trump has the upper hand.

Slashing people’s benefits generally is not the upper hand. When you have a few hundred dollars less in your check each week and Trump has claimed the blame, you notice.

You are too invested to see clearly.

He'll try. But he'll own it. Pelosi of course will claim he & the GOP mucked it all up. We'll have to see how this one goes. Trump probably felt he had nothing to lose.

It's stunning to see how quickly the Right abandoned ALL of their principles. Of course, that only proves that they never had them to begin with.

Actually most of us are simply amused that Trump pulled the 'ol rope a dope on Democrats in Congress. And now a few million gullible voters are going to thank Trump for getting them money which Democrats couldn't.

It's not too hard to see why so many liberals in this thread are so worked up. They might whine about usurping Congress and throw snot over the Constitution this and the Constitution that but we know what the real game is and that's the one less than 3 months from now.

That Trump cutting people’s benefits is a winner for him?

What it is and how it plays are two different things.

Where does that kind of money come from when it's an executive order?

Congress has the money, or so I thought.

Is Trump transferring money from somewhere?

He'll claim he's doing the best he can in the face of Dems' obstruction.

Literally everyone already knows the GOP’s problem was that the Dem bill was too generous, including full extension of the benefits they were already getting. Trump can claim the Dems are pinching pennies all he likes , there’s a reason no one outside the cult listens to Trump.

The dems like to point out that the house has "power of the purse" but they don't point out they can't seem to come to a compromise that can get passed by Congress.

The Republicans also pointed out that only Congress has the 'power of the purse' when they controlled the House when Obama was President. The Supreme Court ruled in Clinton v. New York City back in 1998 that the line-item veto as granted in the Line Item Veto Act of 1996 was unconstitutional. If the President using the line-item veto is unconstitutional, then what Trump did today is clearly unconstitutional.

We shall see. I'm afraid you've fallen into the Pauline Kael trap.

“If I'm victorious on Nov. 3, I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax," Trump said. "Joe Biden and the Democrats may not want that, they don't want that."

Is it possible that Trump doesn’t understand that the people who absolutely “don’t want that” are seniors who up until recently were his most faithful supporters? It’s basically defunding Social Security and Medicare.

This is interesting because neither Democrats nor Republicans want a payroll tax cut, it has never been part of either a House or Senate proposal. Why is Trump the only one who wants this? It doesn’t help anyone that has lost their job.

SO WHO DOES IT BENEFIT THE MOST? PEOPLE LIKE TRUMP! For Trump personally it would mean that his businesses would not have to pay their share of the payroll tax. If he could get out of paying the business share of the payroll tax for a year it would put more than $30,000,000 in his personal pocket. Maybe Trump just looks at it as an exit bonus.

Trump is like a wild animal backed into a corner.

“Joe Biden and the Democrats don’t want to defund Social Security and Medicare but I do” is electoral gold. For Biden.

You really should read the EO's. Then you wouldn't have to ask that question.

Memorandum on Authorizing the Other Needs Assistance Program for Major Disaster Declarations Related to Coronavirus Disease 2019

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) (Public Law 116-136) included $150 billion appropriated directly to State, territorial, tribal, and some local governments through the Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) to cover costs incurred due to the COVID-19 emergency. As of the latest report from the Treasury Inspector General regarding State expenditures, more than $80 billion of CRF dollars remain available, to supplement the billions of dollars States have received in other Federal assistance, such as the $8.8 billion in emergency assistance provided under the Stafford Act (42 U.S.C. 5121 et seq.). In addition, the Department of Homeland Security’s Disaster Relief Fund (DRF), has more than $70 billion in emergency assistance funding available.

The executive branch has significant reprogramming authority.

People are keeping their own money, not being given money.

Perhaps they were never taught how a bill becomes a law?
