"""President Donald Trump on Thursday issued an executive order that would ban the social media app TikTok from operating in the US in 45 days if it is not sold by its Chinese parent company ByteDance."""

What about individual freedoms and the free market? Or, better yet, regulations that destroy businesses and the economy?

""The order does not state that a certain amount of money from the sale needs to be sent to the US Treasury Department, which the President has been insisting on for several days."""

I hate TikTok and have no issue with it going away. However, the fact that an executive order is what is forcing this private business transaction is a huge overreach of executive action and government intrusion.

It is crazy, if Obama had done this to a company destroying the environment or mistreating workers the right would go crazy.

Hypocrisy.......

45's latest distraction from his failed leadership.

A president forcing a sale?

Wow.

I am not supportive of these hardball illegal tactics by our president but China is such a national security threat, they must be stopped. Apps like TikTok can track the geolocation of an individual. China can use this information to track the exact location of an individual. They use the geolocation tracking information to capture and torture American citizens. Imagine how valuable this is information is to capture American's overseas?

We cannot be afraid to confront China otherwise their brand of socialism will take over. We need to stand up from democracy and human rights.

We are losing the war on tech. Chinese is leapfrogging us. They built a Giga factory in a year when it took two years for the U.S to do the same. The problem is when someone here takes a stand against China, they get branded an isolationist or war mongerer.

Trump is right to view China as a problem--it's one of the very, very few times he correctly realizes something. But being a hotheaded idiot who has hurt our standing on the world stage, he completely lacks the ability to do anything about it.

His actions won't put a dent in China. They're already several steps ahead of the President of the United States. Cold War 2 is beginning, and Trump is losing it for us.

I 100% agree but Biden won't solve the problem either. We already saw what the Obama administration did against China - absolutely nothing.

EVERY conversation on China should begin and end with human rights. If China cannot commit to basic human rights standards, we need to stop doing business with them.

Obama did do this - he signed an executive order banning Russian gun maker Kalashnikov Concern from selling firearms in the US.

I don't remember you being outraged about that at the time, nor do I remember the right "going crazy."

China is impressive in its capabilities. Planned economies can be that way instead of having to bother with the carrots and sticks needs to herd the free-market cats. I really think we should be doing so much more than we currently are in terms of transitioning to a brighter tomorrow. That said, I do not see how this can be enforced in any practical sense. What is next--an executive order demanding a forced update to all devices to target and purge TikTok?

LOL. Trump isn't doing this because of their spyware. He is trying to take a piece of low-hanging fruit and get away with it so he can use that as precedence to go after twitter and facebook.

We need to go after those companies as well. Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Google. All of these companies are getting fat off the American people. They stole our personal information and we deserve to be compensated.

Americans were compensated with 99 cent downloads instead of $1.49 downloads and books for 25% -50% off what they went for in the now defunct local bookstores.

What this boils down to is that memory is so cheap now, companies can afford to amass insane amounts of data for the price of the electricity.

EDIT: Maybe the solution is tax data by the Gigabyte to discourage hoarding it

While I can appreciate what Trunp is trying to do here IMO he has overstepped his authority. I would prefer that he and Congress worked together on a more permanent solution than a EO that can be overturned by a president more favorable to China.

I also understand that in our current political climate and during an election year such a deal would be unlikely.

Without attempting to be a jerk or argumentative, after days of this news, I have yet to see a rationale statement as to exactly how Tik Toc is this so-called 'national security risk'? At least when in the hands of private citizens. I just don't see it.

I'm just not sure that the President has the authority to do this through EO. We're not meant to have a king.

Interesting that he did this. But then again trump is supposed to be about small government...which he isnt

Furthermore banning us government employees from using this on their provided cells is fine.
Banning the market? Eh..everyone tracks you these days.

That being said there is very little we can do against china and russia. Guns are an easy mark to use

This appears to be naked support for Zuckerberg and Facebook. Did you notice this also includes WeChat owned by an entirely different company and also a competitor to Facebook(WhatsApp)?

President of the United States of America Donald Trump's Executive Order comes perilously close to something the Administration has accused the Chinese government of doing: forcing US companies to disclose their intellectual property and pay a bribe [Ed.: Servicing fee?] to the government.

And so it goes in the realm of authoritarians.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

The Republicans, libertarians, and conservatives who support Trump aren't actually Republicans, libertarians, and conservatives.

They are fascists.

The vast majority of the people who still support Trump, if you were to put them in a position to vote in Germany's federal elections of 1932, the election that catapulted the Nazis to power, they would vote for the Nazis.

Trump supporters would destroy our Republic if it meant getting what they wanted policy-wise.

They didn't steal it exactly. You gave it to them.

45's latest distraction from his failed leadership.

This in itself is failed leadership.

He is supposed to be a Republican, which is supposed to be a conservative. Thus, his malicious interjection into private business (while looking for a cut), is an offense. He proves again to be a simple plutocrat who doesn't really care to "lead" anything.

Of course, this is only an offense if conservatives actually cared about conservatism and that the GOP actually cared about its long-dead ideologies. We are talking about a GOP that has an enthusiastic history of bailing out mismanaged corporations and banks, with an agenda to free them of taxes, while accusing "the left" of socialism for preferring to send tax dollars back to tax payers.

Can someone please explain the basis for banning TikTok? Sounds to me like the only basis is that it is Chinese.

Unwitting fascists. Most of them have proven that they can't even define the word.

The conservative collective in America are like German conservatives of the 1930s, following along like lemmings wherever the radical path takes them without a thought in their head as to what they are doing.
