Federal officers in Portland suffered 113 eye injuries from lasers: DHS

The deputy director of the Department of Homeland Security says federal officers in Portland suffered 113 eye injuries while guarding a courthouse from activists armed with powerful lasers. ...“We’ve had a number of officers who have days-long blindness. So far they’ve all kind of come back, if you will,”...

The novel laser attacks drew attention last month as President Trump deployed federal officers to bolster the besieged federal court building. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said at a briefing in July that three officers were believed to have been permanently blinded.

Although Cuccinelli said all officers recovered their sight, he said activists appear to be aiming to maximize damage. “A tactic that quickly developed among the violent participants in these activities was to cut those holes in the shields and instead of standing back at the back of a crowd and aiming at the eyes of officers, they will also now bring the shield up close and bring it right up into you. And so the intensity of the strike to the eyes of the officer is much more significant,” Cuccinelli said.

Cuccinelli said some protesters are indeed peaceful, but others aren’t. “This is sort of the Portland formula: there’s peaceful protesting until 10 or 11 o’clock, and then they go away. And maybe some of them come back, but the group that comes back is A.) much bigger, but also they come back for violence,” Cuccinelli said.

The DHS official shared various war stories from two months of clashes, which he said would have seen the destruction of the courthouse if feds did not respond. “We’ve had accelerants poured into the courthouse while commercial grade mortar style fireworks were being shot into the doors and attempt to light it. Also, while the side doors the exits of the building were being blocked, were being barricaded closed,” he said.

Further highlighting that the nightly events in Portland weren't 'peaceful protests.'

Federal officers had no right to be out there infringing on the rights of the citizens of that town. This all could have been avoided if we didn't have a giant cry baby in office.

Using lasers to blind a cop is assault.

The officers should respond appropriately.

I don't have any sympathy for rioters.

The “green” laser light described by Cuccinelli in the OP article, not the green lasers on Amazon, that is capable of causing permanent eye damage or blindness is illegal in the US and not available on Amazon:

“There are reports that green lasers, improperly imported to the U.S., far exceed safety limits.”

(see 2nd para):
Can a pocket laser damage the eye? - Scientific American

Cuccinelli is making things yet proved look as bad as possible. Permanent blindness of those 3 officers from lasers used by whomever has not been proved.

You do realize that people don’t have the right to riot, loot or destroy federal property right?
So your rant is rather pointless.

How does preventing courthouses from being destroyed infringe on their rights? Do they have a right to destroy public property?

If you read the article, they were concerned, at the time, that the blindness would be permanent. Fortunately, it wasn't.

So, you think it's OK to cause 'temporary' blindness?

For goodness sakes this is one stupid post. Federal officers protecting federal property because the
governor and mayor would not do their duty as other cities and states have done. If the feds were not there
the court house would have been ransacked and burned. The attacks on federal property are not rights of
citizens. It's criminal acts. Please stop supporting criminals.

I wonder how many of these "protesters" realize that loss of sight is considered to be serious bodily injury, and it is reasonable to respond to attempts to inflict it with deadly force.

Making excuses for criminal again? What's up with that? Great to see that the DOJ has charged many of the criminals.

You also have no sympathy for the 99% of the protesters who are entirely peaceful. You want them hurt.

Rubber bullets can be lethal, therefore it is appropriate to respond to rubber bullets with deadly force.

Listen to yourself. People like you backed the ****ing Redcoats during the Boston Massacre.

Stopped reading here. Ken Cuccinelli is a moron. Here he is talking in front of Ted Cruz's moronic antifa joke hearing. There's nothing newsworthy here.

How does that justify someone injuring a LEO eye with a laser?

Wait...are you the one now saying there are fine people there now?

How does one justify federal troops injuring protesters in a city and state they were not invited to? I know you big government types don't get it.

Pretty lame response to answer a question with a question.

I don't justify it. Now answer the question.

If you read the article, DHS even addressed this. They didn't have issues with the protesters, who operated during the day. The problems occurred late at night, when a 'different crowd' emerged.

Oh no, trump's secret police were uncomfortable.
