Negotiators on Tuesday are set to reconvene on Capitol Hill to continue hammering out differences over a coronavirus relief package, with top Trump administration officials scheduled to return for another meeting with congressional Democrats.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, will meet with Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader. Mr. Mnuchin and Mr. Meadows will also join Senate Republicans for a closed-door policy lunch.

Republicans object to extending unemployment benefits because they believe the benefits are making workers lazy and unwilling to accept jobs.

But there are more than 30 million workers receiving benefits, and only five million job openings. No matter how harshly you treat the unemployed, they can’t take jobs that don’t exist.

Meanwhile, a great majority of economists believe that unemployment benefits have helped sustain the economy as a whole, by supporting consumer spending.

Smells like Hoover, really. If this is what they want to do in August of 2020, then I guess we'll just sort them out in November of 2020.

The Dems passed legislation in May. Where has the GOP been?

If you're young and healthy then we should not be paying you not to work if there's a job available.

If the republicans screw this up bad, we'll get another Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a another New Deal.

"If." And "if" they get hired. And can find affordable, effective ways to care for their children. And socially distance while at work. And, and, and.

You didn't even read the OP, did you?

The entire economy works on money flowing up from working folk.

So it makes sense to give money to folks who'll spend it, keeping the system "primed".

Cut that money off and the economy will lose "prime" and it'll be a nightmare to get it flowing again.

Are you crazy with that statement? The government will support us all, and they will pay for it by taxing the rich. Forever and ever.

Republicans want millions of people to be evicted because it's a lot harder to vote without a stable address.

Every aspect of Republican policy is directly related to voter suppression.

Work? You mean like the human race has been doing for centuries?

stop making sense.

Did you not read the OP?

30 million out of work, 5 million jobs available.

What part of 6 people out of work for every job available do you not understand?

I work in live entertainment. Millions of others do too. Even with the $600/week I do not get as much as I take home when I'm working. But it will keep me afloat. I cannot afford to work a minimum wage job. I have rent and a truck note and all the other expenses of an above median wage American worker.

So what i and many others would do is displace folks a rung or two down the ladder because we bring more to the job than those who usually hold those positions. It's what the competent always do in a downturn.

But this just bumps the ones we displace down, and this continues until the economy starts to eject those at the bottom. Who don't have savings or credit to carry them until things improve.

This is a huge complex problem that cannot he addressed with simplisitc platitudes.

Work? You mean like the human race has been doing for centuries?

Do you support slavery?

...

See what a stupid question looks like? Stop asking them.

Actually it's more simplistic or sinister...you choose.
Trump/Mnuchin, most of his donors and many others in this administration made billions off the last foreclosure crisis.
Foreclosures for the working stiff = millionaires becoming billionaires.
Follow the money.

Coincidentally, the last time the federal tax plan was changed to benefit the rich and large corps so much was immediately preceding the Great Depression. Guess who got big pieces of the virus stimulus pie? And, now that it's a stimulus pkg for only the avg American, who's against it? Guess who benefited the most during the Great Recession 2008-2009? Guess who's benefitting the most out of this one? What a coinkidink.

Some are receiving those benefits under expanded criteria such as employed with reduced hours. So how many are actually unemployed?

The Republican plan includes an extension of unemployment benefits.

People can spend money at businesses that are forced to remain closed. Where's their bailout?

What jobs would those be?

The phantom ones that the folks on Fox and AM radio imagine?

You Trumpsters just parrot whatever the fuhrer makes up!

The GOP plan cuts the benefit by two thirds.

Business had, and can potentially have the paycheck protection program.

Republicans don't object to extending unemployment benefits at all. Where did you read that nonsense, from the Democratic playbook? Republicans are against people making more on unemployment than when they were working.

Where does the free money come from?
Money printing tree?

This has been tried in Zimbabwe and Venezuela, how’d that work out?

1 US Dollar =
248,209.92 Venezuelan Bolívar

Zimbabwe no longer has its own currency and Zimbabwe dollars of all types are worthless.
