Census Bureau To End All Counting Efforts On Sept. 30 : NPR

The U.S. Census Bureau is ending all counting efforts for the 2020 census on Sept. 30, a month sooner than previously announced, the bureau's director confirmed Monday in a statement. That includes critical door-knocking efforts and collecting responses online, over the phone and by mail.

The census is constitutionally required and it needs to be accurate. Many things can be affected by the census results that include federal funding and seats in Congress. But ever so quietly, the census is being brought to a halt before accurate counting can occur. Why?

The bureau also asked Congress to push back by four months the legal deadline of Dec. 31 for reporting the latest state population counts to the president. Delaying that deadline would allow the bureau to keep counting through Oct. 31 to "ensure the completeness and accuracy of the 2020 Census," Dillingham and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement released in April.

Democrats in Congress and many census advocates have become increasingly concerned that the White House is pressuring the bureau to stop counting soon in order to benefit Republicans when House seats are reapportioned and voting districts are redrawn.

It appears that if they can monkey with the census enough, they can swing congressional maps and seats to their favor. I don't think that the census should be some politicized tool for a party to game the system. If this is true, it goes up there with Trump's toadie appointment to the USPS to undercut the USPS before the election and affect mail-in ballots.

Normally both parties tinker with things like the census and the post office in secret.

Trumps either too bold or too stupid to do it in secret.

Or maybe Trump doesn't inspire enough loyalty among his minions to keep a secret?

I think your fundamental concept is flawed! It does not benefit the GOP to under count the census, as most of the growth states are red.
Adding more congressional districts to red states, and reducing the congressional districts in blue states.
Not counting everyone benefits the democrat party, more than the GOP.
Gerrymandering districts is a long time democrat move, if fact the term predates the GOP by about a half a century.

I'm not 100% sure he cares about is corrupt behavior being plainly broadcast. Gerrymandering has been a favorite tool of the right for a little while now, but to work so hard against the census to ensure it in their favor is a bit more aggressive than normal.

But both sides are the same. /s

The Constitutional requirement of the census is to count the people.

That's what they get from me. 1 person at this address.

President Trump does not choose the USPS director. A PO board does that. At best he can recommend.

Before the results are released, how do you know it is in the GOP's favor?
It technically should be as we know many of the growth states are red, but it is not evident that stopping the count early would specifically
benefit the GOP. It could simply be that they had a very good response to the many adds, encouraging everyone to respond.
It is not like most of us were not at home watching TV with little else to do!

bleh, my post was terrible.

Well you have to ask who is usually undercounted, and thus who will be counted less if the census isn't completed properly.

The latest updates to the bureau's plans are part of efforts to "accelerate the completion of data collection and apportionment counts by our statutory deadline of December 31, 2020, as required by law and directed by the Secretary of Commerce" who oversees the bureau, Director Steven Dillingham said in the written statement posted on the bureau's website.

These last-minute changes to the constitutionally mandated count of every person living in the U.S. threaten the accuracy of population numbers used to determine the distribution of political representation and federal funding for the next decade.

With roughly 4 out of 10 households nationwide yet to be counted, and already delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, the bureau now has less than two months left to try to reach people of color, immigrants, renters, rural residents and other members of historically undercounted groups who are not likely to fill out a census form on their own.

I am not sure "usually" counts for much of anything in 2020.
This years census was very short, and uncomplicated.

In addition, people had a lot of time on their hands, with plenty of ads encouraging them to complete the census.
They may simply have had a much better response than in earlier censuses.

Just a note, gerrymandering predates the Dem party, also, by about 40 yrs. The Dem party came before the Rep by about 26 yrs., so of course they would start gerrymandering sooner.

They're showing about 4 out of 10 households not having responded yet, so I don't think it was a "much better response".

As early as May, top career officials at the bureau said the bureau had already "passed the point" of meeting the current census deadlines.

As negotiations over the latest coronavirus relief package continue, there is a window for lawmakers to include a provision that would give the bureau more time.

So far, however, only Democrats have introduced legislation that would extend deadlines, and Republicans have released no similar proposals.

The census bureau is asking for more time. So obviously they haven't gotten "much better response" than previous census polls. So we're looking at an incomplete census with 40% not properly counted, and the under-counted who tend to be minorities and immigrants. Thus, since this feeds into congressional seats, under-counting minorities and immigrants means they will end up being underrepresented in Congress.

There's a reason it's the Republicans and the WH looking to end the census early and not the Democrats, and it's not because ending the census early and incomplete aids the Democrats.

I think the democrat party started with Jefferson, but was using the name democrat republicans, as opposed to federalist.

If you're going to BOTHSIDES this, you'll need some evidence. I mean, come on, that's just lazy. What tinkering with either are you referring to, or do you just assume that any wrongdoing by one person must have been done by someone in the opposite party at some point?

It makes little sense, as an under count wil not benefit the republicans.

The census needs to be redone once Chancellor Squirrelhead is voted out. His census will be manipulated nonsense.

It does if you're undercounting the people that don't generally support the Republicans. If you don't count the minority and immigrant communities, those communities get less representation. That's less opposition in the House, it's a chance to redraw congressional districts. Of course this can be made to serve the Republicans. It's why Moscow Mitch has been silent on granting the bureau the extra time to complete the census that they've been requesting. They don't want the minorities and immigrants counted.

There is no "democrat" party, and that's not the name of Jefferson's party.

If you're going to reference history, best not to deliberately sound ignorant to make a political point.

Got your stereotyping glasses on? I know that many minority groups tend to vote democrat, but it is wrong to assume it will always be so!
The change to redraw congressional districts would be better with a true count, we know that the red states have increased in population.

Well everyone has increased population. But I would agree it is best to redraw congressional districts with a true count. But where not going to get a true count with the 2020 census, and it's the Republicans looking to end it early.

It makes little sense to cut the counting off early, but the Trump admin wants that done. There's a reason, and the only one that makes sense is they believe the undercount serves GOP interests. It's not in the national interest, or the interest of anything related to a good count, since they're trying to NOT get that done. So what alternative motive do you suggest?

And as I said that would not benefit the republicans, so I am not sure what is up.

I have no idea on motive, only that it will not serve the GOP to have a lower count.
