ANCHORAGE, Dec. 13 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's home church was badly damaged by arson, leading the governor to apologize Saturday if the fire was connected to "undeserved negative attention" from her campaign as the Republican vice presidential nominee.
Damage to the Wasilla Bible Church was estimated at $1 million, authorities said. No one was injured in the fire, which was set Friday night while a handful of people, including two children, were inside, according to James Steele, the Central Mat-Su fire chief.
He said the blaze was being investigated as an arson. Steele said he didn't know of any recent threats to the church, and authorities did not know whether Palin's connection to the church was relevant to the fire.
"It's hard to say at this point. Everything is just speculation," he said.
Pastor Larry Kroon declined to say whether the church had received any recent threats.
Palin was not at the church at the time of the fire. She stopped by Saturday, and her spokesman Bill McAllister said in a statement that the governor told an assistant pastor she was sorry if the fire was connected to the "undeserved negative attention" the church has received since she became the vice presidential candidate Aug. 29.
"Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good," McAllister said.
The 1,000-member evangelical church was the subject of intense scrutiny after Palin was named Sen. John McCain's running mate. Early in Palin's campaign, the church was criticized for promoting in a Sunday bulletin a Love Won Out conference in Anchorage sponsored by Focus on the Family. The conference promised to "help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome."
The fire was set at the entrance of the church and moved inward as a small group of women worked on crafts, Steele said. The group was alerted to the blaze by a fire alarm.

Palin Derangement Syndrome

.....What her detractors don't seem to realize is that in the process of insulting Palin, they are insulting the majority of the country. If being a self-made success story, a working mother, a church-going member of a small-town community, and a believer in moderate to conservative political viewpoints disqualifies Palin, what does that say about mainstream America? The inherent condescension at the heart of the anti-Palin campaign is coming across loud and clear and it may actually be boosting her popularity.

The sexist tenor of the attacks on Palin is only furthering this process. Some of the worst comments have emanated from self-professed feminists who seem to resent the path Palin has taken in life, even as it parallels their own. The always independent-minded Camille Paglia is a notable exception, but by and large, the liberal, female establishment has turned on Palin . Never mind that Palin -- with an amazing record of professional accomplishment, a happy marriage, and five beautiful children -- is the personification of the feminist "women can have it all" ideal.......

is anyone suprised? these elitist savagas have no room for dissenting views, even in alaska.

Note no one firebombed the unity church of chicago.

Shameful act and i hope those who was behind it are caught.

What does that mean? This is not about Obama though you seem to often fixate on him and try to play the "Kevin Bacon" game in every thread that you post in. Why is that? Is it really that challenging for you to stay on topic?

You have absolutely no proof of who did this yet you chose to post immediately that "elitist savages" (aka Liberals) are responsible. You certainly love to make up conspiracies that often go back to Obama, don't you?

Whoever did this should be caught and tried and then we can all pass judgment and then we will hopefully know their motives. Until then, and especially without a suspect or clue of a suspect I prefer to not try to twist this into another Republican v. Democrat conspiracy partisan bull**** thread.

Love the little mantrum, feel better now?

obama has nothing to do with this. I was simply pointing out how a racist church was not firebombed yet this not racist church was.

BTW you think all liberals are savages? how sad for you. :2wave:

Well gee, do the gloves fit?

Who said liberals did it?

After their lame attacks, I would suspect McCain Campaign Staffers to be behind this.

Maybe Putin reared his head.

Might have been kids.

Might have been a disgruntled church employee.

Might have been a pyromaniac.

Might be insurance fraud.

Drunken fisherman? I'll bet it was Moi from The Deadliest Catch.

I hope they catch whomever did this. But let's remember, not everyone operates according to partisan lines.

Wanna bet a silver on it?

Whoever did this needs to see an attempted murder charge of numerous counts as well.

Firebombed? Really? I missed that part of the story? Do you have insider knowledge of what happened? Where were you when this went down? Do you have an alibi? :rofl

Are you gonna discuss the topic or have your little hissy fit all morning? :2wave:

Well, the media did make this Wasilla Fundamentalist Evangelical Church sound like a breeding ground for hatemongers.
I'm not really surprised somebody was stupid enough to try to burn it down.
Perhaps they didn't realize that anybody would be there at the time.
It's pretty much only Evangelicals, as far as I know, that go to church every night.
Most religions only go on Saturday nights, or Sunday mornings, or occasionally wednesday nights.
We can at least hope that the arsonist's intention was not to barbeque the children of the Wasilla Fundamentalist Church.

neither am I.

First one to find out posts it. simple as that.

Then we get into conspiracy sites like WND. I really don't care to be invested in some loser's party affiliation, if he even has one.

Can you show us what part was "firebombed" as you claim? Looks like a fire not a bomb? Are you trying to be a drama queen or what?

Actually he is discussing the story, where in the story does it say the church was firebombed?

I believe in facts not made up ****. You made a serious claim that the church was firebombed and as far as we know that is inaccurate and a gross distortion of the truth. You're the one who made the claim. I'm the one calling you on it and asking that you prove it or retract it. Simple, really.

Maybe he doesn't know what "fire-bombed" means.
Maybe he thought it was just another way of saying "set on fire".

You may be right, it really wouldn't be that big of a surprise.

Ya think? If we're talking semantics then to me there's a wide gap between arson and firebombed IMHO.

The real truth is that we have no idea who did it or for that matter how it was done. The photo that he provided does seem to prove that it was not a bomb, only a fire. Perhaps I misunderstood his intention when he tried to over dramatize the facts and perhaps when he wrote about "elitist savages" he was talking about the Bush Administration?

Amazing to me how facts get so twisted and turned. :doh

Hopefully, the culprit(s) will be caught and brought to justice. Glad to hear no one was hurt.

Maybe he was talking about those skinheads that were arrested for plotting to kill Obama?

Regardless of how it was set though, it is a terrible thing and I agree that the culprits should also receive an attempted murder charge added to the list.

I don't know about that.
I think arson, a felony defined as "maliciously, voluntarily, and willfully setting fire to the building, buildings, or other property", should suffice.
I don't think they'll be able to prove "attempted murder", as I doubt the arsonist/s will admit intentionally trying to murder anyone. They probably believed the building to be unoccupied, and even if they didn't, it would be hard to prove that they were deliberately trying to murder anyone.
