Louie Gohmert, who refused to wear a mask, tests positive for coronavirus

The point is, if the population wears a mask that reduces the spread. It's that simple.

Speak of covidiocy. What is up with this weird-ass fixation of yours on cloth masks when I, nor anyone else, had been recommending that choice? I've already said that cloth is the least effective choice of masking. But still far nonetheless a better choice than no mask at all. And I'm sure that there are millions of Americans who would just love to have access to regular testing. But that's wish, not reality. Even though President Cluster**** and his mostly maskless, but never without kneepads Vice President promised months ago that anyone who wanted a test will be able to get one whenever they wanted one. They don't even test members of Congress flying in from all over the country, many from states where the virus spiking to the point of being out of control, when they enter the Capitol Building. Which is just insane. The only reason Gohmert got tested because he was going to fly with the President to Texas.

I am spending no more time on idiots. Gohmert is probably the stupidest person in Congress - although there is considerable competition. He has trouble completing a sentence and never can complete a thought. I am not surprised that he contracted the virus. I am sorry it was discovered before he flew with Trump, who needs a scare. I am more sorry, though, that his staff has to put up with his idiocy and badgering about masks.

That's useless advice in at least many areas of the country. You can't get a test without symptoms or being in contact with a known positive case unless you're willing to sign your name to a lie, and in my area, it takes 2-3 days to schedule a test and at least another week to get the results back. So in 10 days from deciding to get tested, you might know the results, and in the meantime if positive and not quarantining you've been spreading COVID.

What we are criticizing is Covidiots who don't wear any mask and who selfishly put others at higher risk of disease and death. If we believed masks worked to stop COVID, we'd wear ours and not worry about selfish assholes like Gohmert. We all know that mask offers SOME protection, to us and others, and works best when we all do our part.

So you're beating up straw men here. I don't know why.

Because doctors and nurses wear N95 masks, eye protection and hand protection. Are you unaware of the differences between the masks worn in a hospital setting and the ones worn by the general public?

Oh. yeah, good point. N95 should probably be the standard. I just see so many Covidiots that think a scrap of teeshirt with some elastic is going to stop them from getting covid. It's sad.

People are saying if he had worn a mask, he wouldn't have gotten Covid. That's clearly not the case. There are several threads by people on this forum saying that they wear a mask so they don't get Covid. Spreading the lie that a non N95 mask protects one from covid, or that someone wouldn't have gotten it if they wore a mask, is unhelpful and unsafe. Be safe. Follow science. Don't spread unsafe practices.

What did I say that's anti-science bunk?

It's a fact the guidance is if you're sick, STAY HOME. It's not - if you're sick with COVID, we all hope you'll wear a mask WHEN YOU GO OUT, which was your really awful advice.

It's also the scientific consensus that masks mainly prevent the spread but also offer some protection to the person wearing the mask, even cloth ones. If you disagree, show your damn work if you're going to assert as fact that is untrue.

Again, that's almost entirely misrepresenting the argument. If anyone believes masks "stop" or offer nearly 100% protection against COVID, we would not care about Gohmert and those like him. We care because we all know his behavior 1) increases his own risk, because despite your assertions to the contrary, masks do offer the wearer some protection, and 2) increases the risk of others getting infected by him, and that's true if we do or don't wear masks ourselves. So we care others don't wear them because their behavior affects US, makes the rest us us more unsafe. That's the consistent message on thousands of posts on these forums.

he was positive and contagious before he knew he had it...that is why...so, all of that time he was positive and contagious without the knowledge...he was busy infecting other people...I cannot believe that I had to explain this to you...it has been repeated over and over and over again....you are contagious before you know you have the virus.

It's interesting you make a point of calling mask wearing people "covidiots" but are oddly silent about those on this thread who say outright they wear no masks at all..... If anything quoting them favorably.

And your biggest problem with Gohmert and this story is some suggested that wearing a mask would offer him some protection, which is what the science is telling us is in fact TRUE, and not that Gohmert ignored the medical advice, enforced this misguided policy of not wearing masks on his office staff, thus definitely increasing his risk, and otherwise is a source for information and leadership that will kill people.

Odd priorities if you asked me....

BTW, it would be nice if N95s could be the standard, but we still have a shortage of them, especially if used as directed, which is as disposable devices after a single use. Ranks right up there with testing as a precaution that's not possible where I live.

I do have to say I find it idiotic that someone argues against a 50/75% solution in favor of a 0% solution because we all don't have a 95% solution. Yes single layer masks are less effective, but not ineffective. A mask is not intended - ever - to be the only measure or even the primary measure, but a supplementary measure to prevent the spread of the virus. Minimize contacts, keep distance when you must go out, and wear a mask when you can't maintain that distance. It's a layered defense.

I am one of those who does not really believe a person capable of walking and talking cannot wear a mask. I have severe PTSD that is only controlled with medication. I also have ADHD and severe anxiety issues....masks drive me insane. I wear one. One of my son's has asthma, the other has lung deficiency due to a bout with RSV when he was a baby. My daughter has severe apnea that requires her to this day to wear a monitor...and my mother has use of only one lung...I don't take the chance that I will kill one of them....so, I struggle for brief moments to see the people I love the most and wear a GD mask. I am also a cancer survivor....been cancer free for 3 years now...I damn sure do not want to end up in a grave.

Did you not notice that he made the tweet announcing his positive result IN his office NOT wearing a mask? Then mused he might have gotten it from wearing a mask. Ya can't fix that level of stupid. And this guy had enough brain cells at one point to earn a law degree...

Hell, it does not even have to be a tight face mask. A face covering in fine. The concept is simply to help prevent droplets from reaching another person. They can follow that concept and fashion a face covering that does not cause them their perceived harm.

Unfortunately it's unlikely that most people who contract covid 19 will stay home and isolated forever. Hence the need for masks.
