Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested today by FBI agents on federal corruption charges. Click here for the latest updates from the Breaking News Center.

A three-year federal corruption investigation of pay-to-play politics in Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration has expanded to include his impending selection of a new U.S. senator to succeed President-elect Barack Obama, the Tribune has learned.

Federal authorities got approval from a judge before the November general election to secretly record the governor, sources told the Tribune, and among their concerns was whether the selection process might be tainted. That possibility has become a focus in an intensifying investigation that has included recordings of the governor and the cooperation of one of his closest friends.

What? Corruption in Ill. Politics? NO WAY!

I'm not surprised.

A 76-page FBI affidavit alleges that Blagojevich was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps during the last month conspiring to sell or trade Illinois' U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama for financial and other personal benefits for himself and his wife. At various times, in exchange for the Senate appointment, Blagojevich discussed obtaining:

A substantial salary for himself at a either a non-profit foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions;

Placing his wife on paid corporate boards where he speculated she might garner as much as $150,000 a year;

Promises of campaign funds – including cash up front; and

A cabinet post or ambassadorship for himself.

Dudes, going down hard core.

I have to assume that Blagojevich is guilty of something at this point - the FBI doesn't just go around arresting governors for nothing. Assuming so, I have to say that the arrogance that is shown by his actions leads me to believe that such scumbags think that they are beyond the law... that they can't get caught! Although Obama does not appear to be involved here, this caper does put a spotlight on the cesspool from which Obama obtained his political power!

How many IL governors does this put into jail? Illinois, thanks to Chicago, is probably the most corrupt body politic in the nation. No one runs corruption and underhanded dealings like Chicago, no one. Of course Obama is dirty as well, you can't come up through Chicago clean; that is the one truth of Illinois politics. You can not come up through Chicago clean.

If anyone has ever met his father-in-law, Dick Mell, you KNEW this was going to happen. :rofl

Another one bites the dust. What is it with governors? Do they think they are untouchable?

It was in the past a caricature showing the former DC Mayor Marion Barry walking like a Jesus over a pool of mud while his political friends were sinking and trying to float at its surface. A similar scenario has been observed with Obama in his campaign, everybody sinking around but him...but Marion Barry finally lost his miracly luck...

If something fishing is around Obama...the plastic cover which impedes to spread that smell will be broken in one way or another...lets see if this is such a rupture into something else...I still give the benefit of doubt...

Yea...sort of like Alaska, Stevens and Palin huh... :spin:

As Obama showed with Reverend Wright, he's [Obama] not afraid to throw someone overboard if they hurt his politics too much. I mean, didn't he say something like he'd no sooner disown Wright than he would his own grandma or something to that effect? Yeah right. Overboard when Wright refused to shut his mouth on the national stage. Obama will jettison anyone who threatens his career. Fair enough, at least you know what you're getting with that. My contention since before the election took place was that you could never trust Obama because Obama is Chicago, and Chicago is corrupted to the core. Chicago controls Illinois politics, Illinois politics is a cesspool of evil, theft, bribery, and worse. Much worse.

Never trust Chicago. But always root for the Cubs and the Bears....White Sox suck.

It has nothing to do with Obama?

Let's see in 4 years.

In the meantime (Honk! Honk!) watch Obama throw him under the bus.

In the meantime (Honk! Honk!) watch Obama throw him under the bus.

If the governor did something illegal why shouldn't Obama hrow him under the bus?

If the governor did something illegal why shouldn't Obama hrow him under the bus?

Because clearly he's a partisan and will side with his Governor until the end....

Oh wait he must be an ideologue because he's not a partisan, but he's filling his cabinet with centrists...

Could it be? He's a human being without blind loyalties or Utopian dreams?

I'm betting he'll turn out to be something worse a partisan or an ideologue. Some mutated hybrid of Neo-Conservatism and Progressive Democracy.

The real question ladies, is who was the Gov. talking to about being an ambassador or getting a cabinet position with. There is more here, and if the FBI has Obama on tape making deals to get the person he wants to take over his seat...

Yea...sort of like Alaska, Stevens and Palin huh...

You're really reaching... When another [alleged] crooked Chicago Democrat politician is arrested, this time after a 3 year FBI probe, all you can mutter is... "Palin"! That's pretty pathetic considering that she was not found guilty of anything and certainly appears to be pretty damned honest! You're probably right... it might be Bush's fault... he personnaly targeted the governor (like shooting fish in a septic tank)! Don't worry, perhaps Obama's trend-setting nature (you know, first office of president-elect, first weekly news conference of the president-elect, etc.) will allow him to pardon all crooks with a D next to their name as soon as he takes office (rather than wait 4 or 8 years), perhaps even before they are found guilty!!!

I wonder how Patrick Fitzgerald's indictment against the governor will be received by those who thought his indictment against Scooter Libby was a joke. Will you claim that these allegations are a joke too? Or did Fitzgerald turn into a reputable US Attorney since he stopped being the special prosecutor?

I don't see this situation implicating Obama. I really don't.

I don't think in this specific case there has been anything illegal done by Obama. I think, though, that this highlights Illinois politics; this is really how they operate. Chicago runs everything, and it's pretty much run like organized crime. You can not come up through Illinois politics clean; it is nigh impossible.

growing up in the dirty politics of Illinois plays a large part in why I lean libertarian. I'm constantly reminded of why we need to limit power.

This certainly doesn't help ex gov Ryan in his pursuit of parole either.

And may even touch President Elect Obama. This is definately news to watch.

Lets see we have got Obama(Chicago), Pelosi(San Fransisco) and Reid(Nevada/Las Vegas). Should be an interesting 4 years. :2razz:

Yea...sort of like Alaska, Stevens and Palin huh... :spin:

Nice strawman; last time I looked, Palin was never arrested and hauled off by the FBI. Stevens was a Senator and hey, lookie here, we have Jefferson caught with cash in his freezer and now the Good Charlie Rangel being investigated for ethics and tax evasion.

The thread topic however, is about a corrupt Democrat Governor. If you think Republicans outnumber Democrats in scandals, I have a bridge in Arizona to sell you.

No surprise here. The whole Illinois shebang is corrupt from the state Governor on down to the lowly Chicago precinct captain.

Never trust Chicago. But always root for the Cubs and the Bears....White Sox suck.
Lol. The owner of the Cubs - Tribune Co. - filed for bankruptcy yesterday. btw... another charge against Governor Blagojevich is that he demanded that Tribune Co. fire some opinion editors who were openly critical of him. If they didn't, he privately threatened to nix any notion of the state buying Wrigley Field from the financially troubled Tribune Co.

The desperate defense of corrupt Democrats is already under way and many are complaining about Fitzgerald and saying he'd better have something SOLID.

I see threats and the defenses already in full swing from the Left. But alas, one is only BAD if one is accused of corruption and a Republican. Whatever happened to the Delay investigation? Oh that's right; NOTHING.

One can accuse charge and prosecute a Republican in the public press; but do that with a Democrat and you treated as if you were a Nazi. :2wave:

First off, threatening the Tribune I thought was Daley's job. Secondly, Illinois had better not ever...EVER buy the Cubs. The Tribune is bad enough, don't need to go from bad to worse. I need a rich, crazy Texan to buy the Cubs. Someone willing to splurge for a good team. I want to hear people say "I'm tired of the Cubs making the World Series, they're always there!".
