Explosion Reported as Firefighters Battle Blaze on Navy Ship – NBC 7 San Diego

n explosion erupted as a roaring blaze was reported on a military assault ship at Naval Base San Diego Sunday morning, according to authorities.

Plumes of smoke arose from USS Bonhomme Richard as firefighters battled the three-alarm blaze on the 3400 block on Senn St. The vessel is an amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego, according to Krishna Jackson of Naval Base San Diego. The ship had undergone a regular maintenance cycle before the fire was reported, Jackson said. Crew members typically are aboard the ship on weekends, but there are fewer than there are on weekdays.

Federal firefighters requested assistance from the San Diego Fire Department at about 9 a.m. All SDFD personnel has been accounted for as of 11:19 a.m., the department said.

I'm watching live updates on TV and I'll this ship is really burning hard. It's now emitting a very thick plume of dark black smoke along with a couple plumes of gray smoke. Thank God all crew members have been accounted for that there are thus far no reported fatalities. But I think there is some concern that this ship is at risk of being a total loss if they can't bring these fires under control soon.

Was just watching this on CNN... interesting. Also interesting that with all that water (the ocean/harbor) they can barely get two little streams of water up into the area.

Looks like that they have cut the smoke down. Especially the black plume, which was likely burning fuel. The fire boats have backed off some but are continuing to spray water on areas of the ship where I believe the munition magazines likely are. So it's looks as though they may be getting a handle on these fires now. But looks like the damage is going to be nonetheless quite severe. And certainly looks like Navy command is going to come under further scrutiny. Yet again.

In dock too... those are big ships... I have been on a few... and the images they have shown don't do it justice.
