Hate Crime Charges After Black Lives Matter Mural Defaced | Time

Two white people in Martinez, California have been charged with a hate crime for allegedly defacing a Black Lives Matter mural, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday.The incident was captured on video Saturday, shortly after the mural had been completed. “We’re sick of this narrative, that’s what’s wrong,” a man can be heard saying in the video as a woman covers the yellow mural with black paint. “The narrative of police brutality, the narrative of oppression, the narrative of racism, it’s a lie.”
Prosecutors believe these people to be Nicole Anderson, 42, and David Nelson, 53, who have since both charged with three misdemeanors — violation of civil rights (which is considered a hate crime), vandalism under $400 and possession of tools to commit vandalism or graffiti. They face up to a year in county jail if convicted.

Hate crime? For defacing a mural? If that is the case, then why arent the people who bring down statues charged with the same thing? Pure hypocrisy and a violation of the 1st Amendment.

The fact that most people won't give a **** about these losers will validate your frustration. Sucks being on the wrong side of history, and yep, it's not always fair. Change is hard.

Of course, even the fair minded will probably pass on giving a ****, when complaints about violations of 1A are brought up in the defense of people attempting to remove the 1A rights of others. :shrug:

If BLM had a permit, then vandalism maybe. To charge a hate crime requires an expectation of a stacked jury. The are being charged for being white and politically incorrect. Martinez is gang country, mostly Sur Santos Pride - an off shoot of Surenos.

They won't do any time. The prisons here in CA are overcrowded, and they let all the non-violent felons out because of the Commie Bat Fever.

Do they have a GoFundMe site for their bail/fine? I bet they cover that too.

This is why we can't have nice things. The left vandalizes all of the right's cultural memorials. The right vandalizes all of the left's. Bad monuments!

lol...that's a whole lot of something there. So many questions. Let's start with these:

Since when were the Jews on the wrong side of history and not the Nazis? The Nuremberg trials would be the more accurate equivalent, if one can be made at all. How is painting over a mural "criticizing" it...? Wouldn't that be the equivalent of attempting to silence? And is all of this American logic, or Oceania logic...or simply POS logic?

Nah, they're simply unwilling combatants. BLM wouldn't exist if cops weren't disproportionately using violence against black folks. You don't like BLM, fix the reason for their existence. It's a much more worthwhile expenditure of your time than making silly claims about race wars - which is especially silly, given the fact that BLM is supported by folks of all races.

Misdemeanors don't carry prison sentences. They'll get fined and do community service. Maybe California does victim impact panels for civil rights violations, I don't know. This is not a very big story.

The OP seems to have an issue with the codification of "hate crimes."

BLM wouldn't exist if black people didn't commit crimes and then resist arrest. Maybe we should start there as far as fixing things.

Committing crimes has nothing to do with extrajudicial murders of Black people by police.

Black people are murdered by police even if they don't resist arrest.

Change???? What change other than the silly change in definition of what is a friggin' "hate crime"?

How is this a hate crime? Far too many people today raised under the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality would only consider this a hate crime. They didn't threaten anyone. Didn't incite violence on anyone or any group. All they did was paint over a slogan which most people would consider graffiti anyway.
