NFL Plans to Play the Black National Anthem Before Week 1 Games

I'm not following.
That is an organization. Not a nation.

What is the origin of the song?
The song was first written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson, the former leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, according to the NAACP. Johnson wrote the poem for the 90th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday in 1899, the Washington Post reported.

The hymn “is a reminder of the solidarity, commitment and community that African Americans forged to not merely survive in this nation, but to create beauty in the face of persistent injustice,” according to The Crisis Magazine.

Derrick Johnson, current president and CEO of the NAACP, said the song speaks “to the history of the dark journey of African-Americans,” NPR reported.
How did ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ become known as the Black national anthem?

Got it now.

Who comes up with this stuff? I think the NFL is just trying to tank its attendance and earnings, by stuffing in as much politics as possible.

The NFL Plans to Play the Black National Anthem Before Week 1 Games

Apparently, it will be played before the US National Anthem. Go figure.

Yeah. Go figure. Slavery came before freedom for blacks. Slavery lasted another 51 years for blacks after the Star Spangled Banner was penned. The Star Spangled Banner didn't become our National Anthem until 1931. That was 117 years after it was written. There were 13 recorded lynchings of blacks in 1931, imagine that, those lynchings came long before the old white guy's National Anthem ever stood for all of us.

So the unofficial Black Anthem will be played at NFL games. Last I checked it is their business and their right to do that. As Right Wing Icon Michelle Malkin would say "Boo Freaking Hoo!"

What I would love, along with their playing that song, would be for them to play the entire rendition of our official National Anthem! That would be a hoot! That would freak out folks from the White House to the Left Coast. I can't help but imagine that more Americans than not have no clue just how long the National Anthem is. Folks would have to be standing for 10 minutes and 20 seconds on average if the entire song was played before each game. Plus it would be a hoot to see how many folks would be totally lost and not have a clue what the words are to the full version. Heck many people have difficulty remembering the words to only 1/4 of the song.

What is funny are the whiny snowflake folks freaking out about this that I saw on Facebook.

It was like...

"OMG OMG OMG"

"They are going to be playing the black national anthem at NFL games!"

"There is only ONE National Anthem!"

"We are all DOOMED!"

Hey turd brains, get over yourselves!

Heaven ****ing forbid we have a bit of unity, yeah?

The NHL plays the Canadian and the US anthem at games with teams between the two countries. If the NHL can handle two songs, the NFL can handle two songs.

For ****'s sake, some people get so triggered by inclusion.

When people grow too comfortable with society centering around them, equality can seem like oppression i guess..

My forecast: At least one person, most likely white, will end up kneeling during this moronic demonstration, and a different set of rules will apply (compared to the precedent Kaepercock established).

Uhh, are you even African-American? Or are you just appropriating someone else's victimhood for yourself?

It looks so fake. It's like you're trying to live vicariously through someone else.

I gave the name of the Republican author because you knew nothing of the history. It was also dedicated to Abraham Lincoln.

Did this part upset you?

"During his tenure, he investigated conditions in Haiti, fought for young black authors to get published during the Harlem Renaissance and supported the Republicans’ Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill of 1921, which the Democrats defeated."

"Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won".

This is something the players care about and they have an opportunity to make their voices heard by millions of people. Why shouldn't they speak out? If I had that much power to spread awareness about a very important issue, I would feel it's my obligation to spread my message. The only people that can stop them are the owners, but would they really risk angering their players when 70% of them are black?

And this isn't the first time race has been an issue in sports. If the MLB could withstand Jackie Robinson joining the MLB, the NFL can withstand this.

How about the players who don't want to deal with this? They just want to play? If they don't play along they will be labeled racist. Are they just supposed to fake it like the Nascar guys did? The fans don't want to here this crap. This is all a bunch of fake outrage. I'm kind of hoping there are no sports so that they lose their platform.

That really is funny.

Glad to see you admit blacks have been historically victimized.

What matters that I am or I am not African-American?

I have never appropriated someone else's victimhood, ever, just for the record.

Fake? Not in the least, everything I posted was sincere and real. You apparently should try to improve your looking.

For the majority of players this is an incredibly important issue. For everyone else it's a minor inconvenience. So yes, I say they just deal with it and play.

Think about it for a bit. Who were the free ones on July 4, 1776?
Not the blacks, they were slaves.
Not the Natives, they were being pushed off their lands.

What others were here but the white people?

Who had to sit in the back of the bus?
Drink from a non white people drinking fountain.
Go to a non white bathroom?
Go to a non white restaurants?
Play in a non white baseball league?
What does any of this have to do with "celebrating white supremacy"?

I think you're trying to exploit blacks, and use them to pursue your own political ends, and that you're merely paying lipservice to them for political expediency.

I bet you do. The opinions of people tend to reflect their internal state. Let that sink in.

Your post is really all that needs to be said about this thread topic. I really appreciated it.

The players who don't want to listen to a couple of minutes of music? They should quit. They're ******s. As are all the people who think the addition of a song before a sports ball tournament matters in any way whatsoever. Get over it. Boycott it. No one cares.

To answer your first question.....they deal with it for the couple minutes of their lives it will take up.

That is the biggest cop out I have ever heard. The African American players also want to play....are they now racist?

This isnt going to make anything better. If players continue to kneel during the anthem I expect fans will remain seated during the other song. The only thing this will accomplish is drive the wedge dividing the fans from the players deeper. Goodell is deystroying the league.

The NFL is not going to miss racists. In fact, most of us can't wait for a day when all the racists are dead.

Um you’ll have to ask everyone else I guess or give me a little more specifics on what other issues you are referencing if you want my opinion.

You said its not a big deal pandering to a minority population over fear of bad press. Just ignore it. Why doesnt the same ever go for those on the other side, people upset at statues for example? Just ignore them.

Considering that whites have disproportionate privilege and power, and that the racial system in the US benefits them specifically, no.

This is only divisive to white people who feel their privilege being threatened.

If we're so privileged, then we SHOULD play a white national anthem, instead of the anthem of ALL citizens. This is divisive to EVERYONE because it further separates people by the color of their skin, by implying that Black is a separate faction in this country.

I think they play America, the Beautiful, actually. I imagine people would mind if the 'Christian Anthem' was featured.

That song is sung before Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl. America the Beautiful has as religious line: "God shed His grace on Thee." So who should be complaining about God Bless America?

My point is that the NFL has to think about their players as well. You might think this is political hyperbole, but the players and many of their fans don't. Perhaps even a majority of fans. And yes, race relations is a divisive issue. There's no way to get around that, but it's still important to address. if it were left up to you, how would you spread awareness of the race related issues going on today? Because it seems like every idea proposed so far has been rejected by a certain group of people.

We dont need awareness, we need to treat everyone as if color doesnt matter, until it becomes normal. Lead by example. Playing a song just for black people only serves to imply they are separate, when they arent. What the NFL should do is find out where they are treating black players differently and stop doing it.

Again, God Bless America is not sung. America, the Beautiful, is. Youre right though, it does have one religious line, but I dont think anyone would call it a religious song. No more than calling our money religious which says In God We Trust.

Or "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We aren't separate? We still talk about Black and white communities as though they were the most natural things in the world.

Not before every game, but it is often sung at the NFL. Check Lady Gaga's Super Bowl halftime performance.

Or "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

I don't think I've ever seen a person say that a reference to God isn't religious. jonny5 is just ****ing with us.
